Don't care what they cost.. or the specials. I will run 3-max of these. Every game. Lol

Funny thing: the TIE Defender was the super-op secret endgame fighter introduced by a space simulator ages ago...
...it had EVERYTHING.
To do it justice it should have Speed 5, Hull 7, ROGUE, Tycho's ability, Bomber, Escort, Counter etc. etc. and TONS of all manner of dice....4 blue and 4 black for squads, 2 blue 2 black for the ships.
And double scatters and braces for Marek. Yeeeha!!!
I was quite happy when it didn't prove to be all that great in X-Wing. Then they fixed it, and now it's popular again.
Meh.
This is why I never liked. It was just supposed to be too sooperdooper, without any tradeoffs.Funny thing: the TIE Defender was the super-op secret endgame fighter introduced by a space simulator ages ago...

I like that it is not the End all be all. I dont want that. No one I know does.
Well, in TIE Fighter, the TIE/D was supposed to be a full on superfighter. As expensive as an entire squadron or more of TIE Fighters (or even interceptors).
I mean, imagine if the Air Force or the Navy could make a very limited run of 50 fighters, with an effectively unlimited budget. Imagine how capable those 50 fighters would be. They might cost as much as an entire carrier air wing, but they'd be really impressive.
TIE/Ds aren't supposed to be efficient or economical. They're supposed to be the best on the field by such a margin that it justifies the cost.

Quite so, but if their point-cost effective, they're going to be flooding our battle-asteroid fields, and so the special-ness will be off of them. I feel similarly about the TIE Advanced, which was also a very limited run.
But I get it. People got hooked on the computer games that these things came out of, and so they connect with people's childhood memories.
There should be only 1 Defender on each stand...not a trio. I mean, does Marek want or need a wingman when he goes out to blow up a capital starship by himself?

His wingmen aren't there to help him. That's just his film crew, whose sole purpose is to capture how unbelievably amazing Stele is on camera, so the Imperial PR division can churn out recruitment holos.

So that's why the pack comes with 4 single stands. All makes sense now!

Thats why I liked the Avenger always more than the Defender. It was a more plausible ship.
How satifing it was to shoot down Defenders in an Avenger. ![]()
Remember the days when you could just divert all power to your engines and out run just about everything (including most of the missiles/torpedoes)?
Last mission in Tie Fighter... facing a dozen Tie Defenders with a Missile Boat
1. Lock onto Tie Defender with 4 Advanced Concussion Missiles
2. Run away with SLAM overdrive
3. Repeat until all Tie Defenders are dead

Speed 5, hull 6, bomber: 9 base points before armament.
4 blue dice is reasonable for anti squads. Now at 13.
Likely costs by anti ship armament:
1red or blue: 14
1black: 15
1blue, 1black: 19
Only if you're Imperial Slugs...
Rebels have all the fun Squadron Tricks...
... other than Cloak, it seems...
They may have the fun stuff but played an X-Wing game a while back where my Defender killed two B-wings in 4 turns. 1 turn to immobilze em the next to turn them into an expanding sphere of hot gas. A Defender is like a battlecruiser, designed to run down anything smaller than it and kill it, while being able to outrun anything bigger than it. If I was an Imperial pilot, I would like that to stay alive ![]()
Maybe 2 red, 2 blue, 2 black for anti squadron. (2 blue, 2 black for ships???). With counter 2, rogue, and if they ever bring it in, elite, due to the fact that only the best pilots flew them. Escort will get them killed off to quickly. Bombers should be limited. They were made to kill X-wings so the trade off should be to limit their bomber ability. In military terms we call them free runners, give them free movement to do what they do best, Not restrict them to escort or bombing missions.

Have to disagree with this statement - todays fighters are heavily constrained by their respective roles, not by economical factors. There is no such thing as a superfighter, and not because armys could not afford it. There is no real life equivalent to a TIE/D, as the idea to have the best of the best in all fields is not realistic at all.

F-22? Exceptionally stealthy, manoeuvrable - capable of dropping bombs on ground targets and firing missiles at air targets? Maybe doesn't cover all fields - but I could see it being the "real life equivalent" to the Defender.
The bomber portion of the card might just come from the X-Wing influence and the ability to have extra missile or cannon armaments.
Any who, I actually want them to aggressive cost this guy so he's a possible option for Imperial players. I want to be tempted to either run these. If he's too expensive, he won't see any play. Pretty much like X-Wing for the longest time.
