Welcome to FFG doesn't care about the lore anymore.
I haven't yet gotten any of the newer ally packs but someone here at least implied that some of them had time periods blocked out in their previews.

The newest ones (Obi-Wan, Greedo, and Inquisitor) had no time periods at all.
And in the time before that was confirmed someone said something along the lines of "It wouldn't be the first time FFG has blocked out a time period" I was wondering about that.
None of the wave 8 figures have time periods, I think FFG has just removed that from the game at this point. Also am I the only one to think that Luke looks like he isn't wearing his Return of the Jedi outfit?
Dewback looks awesome, able to be used as both a unique or a regular. This should be how it's done.

They can't just remove them from the game, it's a core part of the rules, they'd have to go back and errata a ton of stuff to remove time periods.
I understood why Wave 7 had to omit time periods for playability, but it makes no sense to not put a time period on new Luke. FFG better start explaining wtf is going on, because represents a change in the core rules of campaign.
YES, YES,YES!!!!!!!!!!!

They might just have it where allies and villains don't have time periods but campaigns do, I guess so you can have more freedom to have certain heroes show up and stuff. I kinda wish they kept the Time periods though.

Since its campaign and something played with friends (hopefully) its not like this lack of rule breaks the game. You can just house rule these things. However it is still stupid to introduce them and then take them away. Now we have no idea when the time periods take place... Only when the campaigns tell us specifically. Even then we could see two campaigns taking place in the same time period, but in drastically different times. Imagine if time period 6 took place before and after RotJ?

There's enough side missions and allies now that there's no reason you can't houserule time periods... end of the day it only matters what the group wants to play. We'd decide via vote.

Play whatever feels thematically right to you. The expansions have added so much material already that the options available for side missions or open groups is pretty awesome.

Theres problem with this however.
1. Technically the Rebels get to decide what heroes they can add to the campaign... but the Rebels arent allowed to know much of the campaign. Time periods could help guide them.
2. Sometimes its even suggested that the Imperial player not read ahead... making the same problem for choosing most agenda sets.
3. Time Periods gave the game a certain level of believably. That just maybe Han did help a team of rebel commandos (the players) on Ord Mantell. And perhaps Boba Fett fought the Rebellion. Now its just like we have a box of action figures and thats it. No story at all. Make up your own.
It shows both laziness and lack of planning on FFGs part.
Personally, for me some of the fun of IA was predicting what we'd see. I could see that Vader had time period 1-6... Han had 3-4... Luke had 3-5 this told me that we'd see Jedi Luke and that we'd see a Hoth campaign without Han. Now without time periods... anything goes.
Why not just let players house rule them out of the game instead of confusing everybody by taking them out halfway through?

It's because some administrator decided time periods were limiting sales (which I highly doubt) and made them remove them

No, it wasn't. It was because time periods limited the amount of content that could be done going forward.
When IA was first designed, no one knew yet which direction Disney will go with Star Wars. The designers assumed that if they are doing a game about the Rebellion era, they can safely set it after Yavin, that way they have a lot of material that's set in stone and can even stretch into whatever postquels Disney does.
Then we got Rebels and Rogue One and whatever other Star Wars Story movies, which are a literal treasure trove of content for the game. But with the current time period framework, you can't insert them into the game without flat out re-writing the entire time period section of the rulebook and errata-ing every single card that has a time period printed on it, since if we're getting pre-Yavin content, early after Yavin can no longer be Time Period 1.
FFG is slowly writing out the time period out of the game now, since it's blocking the expansion of the game. I agree that's unfortunate, but I don't think it's something to get panties twisted about. I for one prefer more content access to sticking to a rule that no longer works.

Where did you get the idea that time period 1 was early after Yavin?
1. The core campaign is time period 3 and takes place weeks after the battle of Yavin.
2. Luke and Han aren't available till time period 3 (after the battle of Yavin.)
3. The Rebellion existed before the battle of Yavin.
Time period 1 was clearly before A New Hope.
Ah, ignore my rant then. I honestly thought that the core campaign is Period 1. Prolly shows you how much use the Time Period rules get with me
Though TBF, I still restrict the use of allies and villains by background, I just figure it out for myself based on the mission background and don't use the FFG framework. I guess that's how it's to be done going forward, so I guess I'm all set ![]()
This game just keeps crapping on 40k, over and over again.
I can see how having time periods in addition to sometimes needing tiles from certain expansions would be a turnoff for some people when it comes to buying figure packs.
FFG will want you to be able to walk into a shop, feel like you can buy any pack on the shelf and play with it immediately.

Time period has nothing to do with that. Non-uniques don't have time periods and can be used immediately if they're not Rebel, uniques and Rebels require waiting to the next campaign, putting them in the deck, hoping you draw them, then hoping you win the mission!
So yeah, going to the store and buying Obi-Wan... had NO expectation of seeing him hit the board any time soon even without time period.
The fix for this, at least for Imperials, is what they did with the Dewback where it has both an elite and a unique card. THAT baby will see play the day I buy it! Oh yeah.

Time period errors aside, if they want to get rid of time periods completely, then they should errata the time period rule. They haven't done that, so we are left with these ridiculous situations in which dead people can be played at any time but Han is supposed to not be usable at times. It should be all or nothing, and the fact that it was started and now ignored without really addressing the issue smacks of interference by some number crunchers.

Instead of removing time periods and putting in a new rule that you can ignore time periods they should have stuck to time periods and added a new variant to ignore the time period rule if you want. People who want time period consistency have it, and people who dont want time periods can ignore it. Everyone wins.

Or even better, if an app is truly coming out, that would be the perfect setting for a sandbox campaign. Keep the expansion campaigns/releases consistent, but let the app ignore time periods.
