Condition Cards...

By Rinzler in a Tie, in X-Wing

Yeah, I'll start this thread WAY too soon...

WTF are these things? Is this Heroclix ?

Ugh. Is this the beginning of stupid mechanics being added? Or is this just coming from an old man yelling at the TV?

I mean, we've seen this in just about every other game, right?

This just strikes me as desperate and, frankly, dumb.

EACH of these new ships comes with condition cards, btw, so this is definitely the new norm.

Yes hopefully this is the only wave with these. I can't even keep all the gimmicks on the Bossk party bus strait.

My main problem with them is they add too much unnecessary complexity to the game, or at least Kylo Ren's does. Suddenly you're constantly searching the damage deck and paying attention to crits and referring to other cards to figure out what an ability does.

It's gonna be a complete nightmare teaching this to new players. "What does 'I'll show you the power of the Dark Side' do?"

Personally I'm on the fence, but my initial opinion is not a fan. Will see once others are introduced, but not sure if I like the idea of adding a new concept to the game.

I doubt this will just be a one time thing. They'll introduce more with new waves that I'm sure will coexist with older waves

The main problem for me is that these gimmicky cards remind me I'm playing a game.

Previous upgrades I subconsciously view as just that:upgrades to a ship to help its performance, or certain characters on board enhancing the ships performance.

This condition card just takes me right out of that mindset, and feels just so...fake. Plus I don't want a token with kylo Rens face on my freaking cool space mat.

I'm sure the other abilities will be cool, and I can always ignore them but that's why I oppose what I've seen so far.

The scum version of the same "mechanic" works like Agent Kallas. Seems to me that they are trying to expand upon that design space, which does not seem like a bad thing. That said, the Kylo Wren ability does seem to be overly fidgety.

These remind me of the Bane/Boon cards they added to the Hoth box for IA. My group started the campaign a few weeks ago and even though the 2(of 4) banes only last for the 1st turn, after the second mission, they were worth their weight in gold to the Imperial player. Despite that, they seemed a very unnecessary addition to the game.

I wonder if these X-wing conditions was be along the same lines. Can see the one getting a crit on a specified ship being bad fast.
