What are your post Demo thoughts?

By JediGeekGirl, in Star Wars: Destiny

After seeing the demo, card list, rules, and the rest of the information, had it changed how you think about this game? Are you more excited? Disappointed? Optimistic? Or any other thought?

For me coming out post demo, this has made me look forward more to the release of the game and honestly the only question I have left is the legendary distribution.

I'm still in the camp that cant get over the collectable aspect. I like to know what I'm getting in what I buy, so while the game looks fun and I would play if someone supplied it, I would not buy it.

My twin brother got to demo the game yesterday. He said when he got close to the table, he could watch a few games. These were his thoughts as he watched the games.

Game 1: This looks ridiculously boring.

Game 2: I still don't understand why anyone would play this game.

Game 3: Wait, I'm starting to see the strategy here. This is kinda cool.

Played the demo: Hey, that was actually a really fun game! Unfortunately, there are already too many fun Star Wars games, so I won't buy it, but it seems like a good game.

For my part, I don't know that I can get in on the random distribution in good conscience. I swore them off when Star Wars Miniatures ended and I'm not sure if getting in is a good idea. I am very curious about drafts, though. If drafting is a thing, I'd like to at least do that once. If I can, I'll at least get one of each starter, just to have a fun game to bust out when I'm in the mood for some episode VII action on the tabletop.

I'm buying 2 starters for sure. I have a hunch I'll buy more, it looks fun, the one action back and forth adjusting your plan on the fly is fun.

I like taking my characters against what you bring, rather then light side versus dark side then switch. It brings that element from Conquest, my warlord versus your warlord.

Distribution might be the huge drawback of this game.

For example the only choice for me for now is Luke, Vader or Qui-Gon. If I don't get lucky boosters I just cannot play. Yes, I can try the game, but I cannot play, know what I mean?

Update: Legendary distribution has been found out. 1 in 6 packs

Were did you find out? 1 in 6 sounds reasonable, a display has 36 packs, so you should get 6 Legendarys. I was hoping for more like 8ish. But not too bad.

Thanks, JediGeekGirl! That's better than I expected and will make it easier for me to talk myself into getting back into a collectible game

From Matt in my Group:

I got a straight answer from Corey at FFG that legendaries are 1/6 distribution of rares. You also need 2 of each starter for a playset (which will result in extra Reys and Kylos).

Honestly i´m a bit more disappointed. I thought it would be a fast paced game that could be played in 10 to 15 minutes easily. Looking at the videos it seems like games will be more like 20 to 30 minutes.

I like the two and fro of the game, you draw 5 cards and think of an idea and play your first card then your opponent does something and you have to change your plan.

As such I find the general simplicity of rules is fantastic, as you now have a game where the play of the game is paramount.

I think too if you look at the Team Covenant video you may notice something. They were going to stop playing after 3-4 turns and played "Just one more turn" on two occasions. This is something you don't do unless the game was fun.

After watching the video and seeing all the info coming in from Gencon, I'm just as excited if not more so to play this. I can't wait, hopefully my area will embrace it and we can build a community and have weekly tournaments.

I guess now we wait 3 months, but to quote Veruca Salt, "But I want it NOW!!"

Once we learn the game better, I'm sure it will go much quicker. Anyone playing now is still a noob by necessity.

It is quite obvious to me that they specifically wanted to see all of the cards. They were making obviously subpar moves (like passing before using all of their dice) and discarding stuff like crazy to burn through the 20-card deck, even though that's tied to a lose condition.

Which isn't bad and is completely understandable. But I think that, on top of the rules explanation, it makes the game seem like a much longer affair than it will actually be. Once you know the rules, it'll take 20 minutes tops to play a match. Once you play 100% optimized decks in a competitive environment, I can see matches ending in 10 minutes. I guess a best-of-three tournament structure is a given.

No doubt I will buy the starters and maybe some boosters IF I'm convinced when playing it. Watching peoples playing it does not make my day but give me a sharper perspective on the item. Well, I am confirmed in my first idea to enter the game and see what it brings to me. I must avow that the combination of building a strategy while dealing with the (controllable?)randomness of the dice. Let's wait and see.

:-)

I watched the demo first thing Friday morning, and I can't wait to give FFG more of my money (like they don't have all of it already...).

One thing I appreciated is what has been noted already... At first glance, it's very simple, much like X-Wing (which I play the most). Easy to teach, easy to learn. But when you really start digging in to timing and game flow, the level of strategy involved adds a welcome layer of complexity. And then comes deck-building... I'm glad in the Team Covenant one he explained the two cost values on the bottom left. With the smaller number you only get one die, but more room for other characters. With the larger number you get two die, but it limits who you can pair him with. This will make for some interesting trial runs!

As I've mentioned before, I loved the SWLCG, but it was incredibly hard to get new players to join in because of its instant complexity. Destiny will make it much easier for new players to join.

Bring on November!

I'm interested by the game from watching the demo. But the collectible is just too much to get over. Maybe I'll proxy it and give it a try for myself before making a final decision. That's what I do for most games anyway.

I admit i was sold the second I saw the announcement on the website. Then the Team Covenant demo was posted and It confirmed my desire so hard i immediately pre ordered 2x starters (Kylo and Rey) and 2 booster boxes. You can come over to my house and crack boosters with me. we'll battle afterwards. :P

I dunno, I'm thinking about several decks, and I'll play with what i get I suppose: If I can't get vader/dooku for my discard one, I might try a deck with a ton of storm troopers shooting up the place, or maybe rey with a ton of upgrades. (I shall call it my "little Rey of hope" deck ;) )

I was gonna mention you can trade dice and cards, but yeah with the most of the main characters from the OT as legendaries and you can use multiple dice... yeah not sure people will be keen to trade away their Vaders.

I LOVE that name for deck concept. As you go through building, keep in mind that characters have a 3 upgrade limit. (I'm thinking Force Push, Lightsaber, and Rey's Staff)

On trading, you would be surprised. For someone like me, who was a teenager when the prequels came out, the original trilogy characters might as well be figures within sacred text, and trading my only Darth Vader would probably never happen. But for younger players, people who saw the prequels as elementary of middle schoolers (or younger than that), those characters all live in the same rarified world together. For them, Obi-Wan Kenobi or Yoda loom large in the imagination. I know my 8-year old son hates Darth Vader because he loved Anakin Skywalker (in the clone wars cartoon), and was pretty upset that he turned out to be a bad guy.

TL;DR You can probably find someone to trade with. Keep hope! :)

Yes, trading/buying will be possible sooner or later, but I'm talking about the first decisive few days - that might hurt player growth.

But now we know that legendary is every six packs, so I think this won't be a problem.

I´ll probably search for a draft game when it first comes out or something along those lines that lets me quick build a deck, then play it right there on the day. That´ll be the make and break for me continuing it or not.

I did two demos at GenCon. While they were only a couple of rounds, I can see that there is promise in the game. The dice mechanic can be worrisome, but with only one blank on a die typically, your dice failing you shouldn't be too much of an issue. Add in the amount of reroll and dice manipulation and it makes that blank less scary.

I know one group that is wondering about the sealed deck/draft viability. The collectible part doesn't worry me so much as long as they go on a long cycle for the base set. Then it's just seeing what happens with the expansions.

Overall, I'm pretty positive about the game. I'll definitely get some to start with and hopefully a meta will grow in the central GA area.

Oh, just noticed, 30 cards equals 30 points of characters. Would it be as simple as 20 cards equals 20 points or 45/45 say?
