Forged in Battle - quick review

By ApocalypseZero, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Thanks so much!

...Wow, those are beastly Signature Abilities. Very fitting for a soldier!

Our last turn at WEG, I had a defective stomrtrooper clone who was a goddamned beast incarnate with a Sword That Could Cut The Gods. He occasionally would leap from the ship onto TIE fighters and demolish them - with the Die cap and a good roll, would work about half the time. Sadly, when I built him in FFG as a thought exercise, he couldn't do that anymore.

. . . until now.

Could you tell me what the "harm and ill effects" from the Cunning Snare Talent is (Trailblazer) ?

Last preview is up. Preordered with my FLGS, called them, said they should get it in this Friday or Monday.

Art for Elomin and even Kyuzo don't make them too ugly IMO, but I'm neither British nor female.

Wait... let me see that.

Does anyone know what the Stats are for the LAAT are?

Question: What kind of special features do the new vibroknives have?

I'm curious are there any melee or brawl weapons in the book?

If ApocalypseZero doesn't return to do it, I'll try and pick up the slack of answering questions once I get my hands on this tomorrow evening.

I almost hate to ask...

...do you track your package deliveries like you do book announcements?

;)

No, I don't :) . My FLGS gets all the new FFG books in on their release date like clockwork, with exceptions for if there is a holiday earlier in the week, or if there is extreme inclement weather. There has been neither, so I have every confidence that they will have it in stock tomorrow.

Although I can understand why you felt the clarification necessary :) .

I. Would. Kill. For a local shop to support. Sadly, if it's not Magic or D&D I'm SOL.

My FLGS is awesome! It's called Enchanted Grounds (fun game: find the triple entendre in there!), and they're a combination coffee bar/game shop, and they support just about everything. And anything they don't have in stock, they can order for you.

My percentage of time spent there is much higher than it should be*...

That... sounds nice.

I have Scholars, which allows any game to be played if you schedule it, but caters to used books, Magic, D&D, and Warhammer miniatures. It's right next to the university here (which I attended) and allowed me to put up an ad offering to paint said miniatures for fun and profit.

Between home and work is Battlegrounds which I believe is Magic and Magic and, I am not mistaken... Magic.

I'm curious are there any melee or brawl weapons in the book?

The answer is yes. Three of them, all melee. The most interesting one is the warshield, since it can be used ala Captain America, I kind wish that when you threw it, it had the linked/autofire quality. Then you could imagine it hitting multiple people really quickly.

Here is my review.

I love this book. Soldier is my favorite career and this book does a lot of great things. The Kyuzo are really cool and while I'm not big on them, others at my LGS like the Elom and Elomin. I wish we had three brand new specs but I know why they reprinted heavy.

Trailblazer is interesting. I enjoy it, but I think some parts of it could have been better done. Prey on the Weak at 20 and 25 points aren't great- not that either of them is really needed, so no real foul. I don't like that ability. If I get both ranks, I do +2 damage to targets if they're disoriented. I'm not saying that they're useless- if you run a character who leans towards using disorient weapons, it can help. But eh. You do get the ability to cause disorient, but PotW just doesn't seem worth it.

I would have loved to see additional ranks of Prime Positions, which is really good and seems to indicate that there should be multiple ranks yet there aren't. Most of the tree is very good. I don't think it'll be treated as a top of the line spec, but I can see several awesome builts off of it. Great work overall there. Love me some dodge.

Vanguard is a really solid spec overall. I didn't find anything that blew my socks off, but I don't think there is anything that screams at me as not being worthwhile. Seize the Initiative itself is an awesome ability, while Bodguard is great.

The new guns are awesome. The armors are also very nice, I love seeing some Rebel heavy stuff. The equipment is wide-ranging without being filler- everything seems to have purpose and cause.

I am sort of bummed that we didn't get Starfighters, but it was great to see military vehicles en masse. I still think there are some parts of ground arsenals missing, but so many gaps have been filled and so much cool stuff exists none of it is an issue.

It is the final chapter of the book that I think is really strong. Between rues for fortifications and various types of combat environments really adding loads of flavor and possibilities in game, the short campaign and adventure ideas are really on point for the book. And the end with scars and trophies? I loved it.

Overall this book was great and one of the better splat books. Nothing was perfect, but everything was content great and sparked a lot of cool ideas at the table. It makes me doubly excited to see what will come from the next adventure book!

The Victim get Wounds and Disorient, Stagger, Immobilize depending on the Skill-test Result.

Question: What kind of special features do the new vibroknives have?

One has more Pierce, the other is a survival knife with some tools

Minor annoyance: I don't like that the background suggestions often point towards Medic characters having been doctors or having had formal medical education before becoming a soldier. In my mind's eye, corrupted by exposure to actual medics, a Medic is first and foremost a Soldier that has technical training for treating battlefield injuries. The Alliance would do well to put individuals with formal education on health, illness, and treatments to use as doctors, nurses, or other professions operating (pun unintended) behind the lines.

OK, enough on that. The book looks great so far!

Thanks. I think I miswrote my intended question: What statistical/crunch value is having a fortification? I presume these may be temporary? In other words, what's the difference between these new rules, and players wanting to build a duck blind ad hoc?

One adds Defense Against Ranged

One adds Armor

One adds Consealment

So, the Kyuzo war shield: yes, it is the hat.

In case somebody missed it, this book gives you the ability to purchase Talents outside of trees! Yep... You just have to take the appropriate Critical Injury and then pay the XP to take a selection from a list of talents appropriate to that injury (and the scar it leaves). Before you go thinking you can go all "classless" just by scarring yourself up something fierce, there is a suggested limit of no more than 3 of these scars per character. They do suggest that you might be able to drop one scar for a new one, but I believe that XP spent on the dropped scar is lost.

O_O

That is...pretty boss, actually! Imma gobs need to read that something fierce! Unfortunately, an emergency doctor visit means I'm at work later then usual, so I don't have my book yet...:(

One more hour, Phee, just one more hour...

WOW, thats really quite cool. Is there a table of if this then that? or just limited "use common sense" text? I assume many are social related talents?

Can you give an example?
