Forged in Battle - quick review

By ApocalypseZero, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

There is some duplication across lines as FFG treats each line as separate even if compatible. EotE and AoR have seen the most duplication of specs, the heavy being the most recent. The talents in the duplicated specs are the same and these specs are the same for all intent and purpose for taking them. You can not double up. There has also been some duplication of races across all three lines. This is as intended. F&D is the only line of the three that will probably not have any copies of earlier specs if only because each F&D spec incorporates the Force in some capacity. We will see Force-inspired specs of earlier ones, like the Starfifgter Ace of the Pilot, but no exact copies.

Speaking of repeats, if I would say one of the Technician specializations would reappear in the Engineer book, I'd say Droid Tech. Droid PCs notably had the problem of not benefiting as much when repairing wounds as meatbag characters before Droid Tech appeared, so it would make practical sense for Engineers to have it, to give primarily AoR playing groups that benefit.

In order.....

Cumbersome is rampant on the weapons, but some are only 3.

I could map it out. Is a picture of the book a no-no?

I remember seeing a Kyuzu Energy Bow and Kyuzu Armor, so I think you are good there.

I'm pretty sure that pictures of just spec sheets are allowed

FFG didn't send me a "please don't do that" pm/email in response to this

and they haven't asked doc the weasel to cease and desist from making pdfs of the specs (although he has stopped because he's not playing FFG star wars right now)

And I am really really really eager to see the Vanguard... it sounds like it might fit the build I'm working on well.

Hmmmmm 4 species this time around. That's nice. I hope they continue with 4 from here on out. More species to play with is fun. Also Some good choices. The Elomin and Kyuzu are good choices. I now have ideas for Kyuzu Commander :) . Shistavenan aren't a bad choice either.

I am very excited for this. I must have more information!

Kyuzu ... I need to play one of those.

What's nice is that none of the four species are repeats from other lines. Solid win there.

Of course, Maelora isn't likely to be too pleased, but the Elomin are vaguely Zabrak-like and I think they passed her test.

Isn't it "Kyuzo" and "Shistavanen"?

Shh... don't summon her! They deliberately kept the species selection under wraps so she'd obsess over healthier things, like Daisy Ridley martial arts training videos.

I think we scared ApocalypseZero off. He hadn't been here since I asked for maps of the spec trees...

I would imagine, that if you are at Gencon, you probably have better things to do than to inform the forum about the new book over a probably sh*tty internet connection via a hotel on a smartphone. After Gencon is over i am sure more news are coming in.

on a sidenote: I got the Force Awakings Beginners Set on Saturday and I am living in Germany ordering via a German Online Shop, so this time they were really fast...

Ah, I'm resigned to it, Happy.

AoR is one long barrel-scraping of obscure uglies. To be honest, at this stage I'd be gobsmacked if we saw anything that sees play at my table.

The moment I saw the ShitzuMen were included I knew this was a non-starter for me. We get species based on whatever random costumes Lucas found in the studio costume department when he ran out of masks for the Cantina scene.

Too late. I arise, from my sickbed, to complain about ugly species! :)

I'm already thinking about a Vanguard Gunslinger being ugly.

That will go well with the species then! :)

I mean, I love me some zabrak, but Elonim look like a particularly-haggard zabrak and a rakghoul had a wild affair on Nal Hutta and this popped out nine months later...

Maybe we'll find out that Elomin are Zabrak on space-meth... :o

Oh well, don't let anyone smack your gobs over it (unless you want to).

Would love to get the stats for Shistavanen! My group is just about to start a new game and I'm kinda interested in rolling one!

Isn't the Wolfman the symbol for people who hate the 1997 Special Edition? It's about time we get his species back.

Come to think of it, I also want stats for the Florn Lamproid. Now that's a sexy species.

Bah! Bah, I say! If you have the book, your sacred Duty takes precedence over everything else! Who wouldn't want to sit at their computer and type out pages upon pages of technical details? That's a thing that everyone does, right?

...

Right? Everyone does that? Right guys? Guys?

The thing is ..... only one of those four is really ugly. The other three aren't bad looking at all. I think the "ugly" species designation is just too broad and seems to pretty much mean anything that isn't human looking.

You must mean the Elomin or the Kyuzo - because who wouldn't want to cuddle these fuzzywuzzy Eloms? They are so adorable!

Kyuzo aren't ugly... I don't get the hate of some nerds... makes me sad :(

Soooo.... with my contractually-obligated whinge about the species out of the way...

... anyone want to spoil the spec trees?

I feel the first person to get the books should do an open thread answering questions, as I did for Special Mods.

Have they revealed what clone wars era equipment they added?

I'm here. I don't general show up on the weekends. I'm here during work hours to keep me sane. :D

I'll get a pic of the Vanguard and Trailblazer up tomorrow. I meant to snap pics this weekend, but it was busy. Funny thing, wasn't at Gen Con all weekend either. (or at all actually. Had my brother pick up my things since I wasn't going this year.)

I'll answer questions and such when I can. I'm unsure about what I can post as far as pics from the books. But I'll get the Specs done. Species I might only do in text.

So, I guess, ask away?

A list of weapons, armor, gear and vehicles by name, if it isn't so hard. That's usually the first thing people ask for.

I guess I got homework to do tonight. :D

Characteristics for the four species introduced and their special abilities. I've got a player who is interested in possibly playing a Shistavanen.

Woot! For Shistavanen and Kyuzo, BOO for no Bith.
