Very Disappointed With Miniature Quality...

By pstalker, in Mansions of Madness

I think that they could've improved the miniatures, but feared making all the first edition owners mad. I might glue my bases as well. Putting the tokens inside the bases is almost meaningless in 2nd edition.

They should be.

The minis are ok, but yes, I was expecting more.

That said, they're far better than Descent 1st ed, but that was a number of years ago when the baseline of quality for these games wasn't as high as it is today.

I, too, was disappointed by the quality of the minis and bases. It's the first time I've ever felt this was about a FFG product, and between Arkham and Eldritch Horror & expansions, X-Wing, and many other FFG games, ive probably spent close to 2,000 dollars on their products. I hope this is an outlier; I'm used to FFG being synonymous with top-quality components.

I'm oddly relieved to see I'm not the only one with this problem. The game is rgreat, and I'm very glad that I bought it. I'll happily buy the upcoming expansions without hesitation. But the minis are lousy. Not only is the quality not what I've come to expect from FFG, but also they are oddly non-functional as well. The square bases are unnecessarily bulky, hide the great token art, and look out of place with all the other great art on the board. I look forward to seeing people's re-basing efforts. I might do the same, and just use the tokens for reference.

2 questions regarding the topic

1) do you think that the following printings of MoM2 will correct this problem ? Or will FFG reprint it (when needed) with the same weaknesses in the components ?

2) I was going to start a new topic about it but find a good place here to ask : Having passed my turn with MoM1, if I buy MoM2 I will probably take both the next expansions with mini's and tiles. Knowing the suffering of mini's in the base set : a) is it reasonable to think that the mini's in those two expansion boxes will also suffer from the same problems ? b) that 49.99$ is too much for what it offers knowing there is a risk with the quality of the components ?

Thanks for your answers,

Elrad

It would be great if they would release revised mini sets, but I'm not holding my breath.

The expansions are re-releasing the minis from 1st edition, so I would not expect them to be any better. However, the game is more about the story than the minis, so for me, I think they'll still be worth it.

Elrad,

creating new minis means creating new molds, which are rather expensive, so, I don't see this coming. Still, I consider MoM a boardgame that uses miniatures, not a miniature game, so that I'm ok with the quality of the minis (they are not bad; simply they are not great. Some of them are really cool, some others a bit more meh. The real problem could be the pegs of some figures, but if you glue them, then the problem is solved)

As for your second question: quality of minist for 1st edition is similar to 2nd. Not crap, not great. As for the convenience in getting the two exp packs: absolutely, I'll pick them up in a heartbeat, there's a lot of content and it's not like "I'm paying 50 bucks to get 1 scenario", it's more "I'm paying 50 bucks to expand my whole gaming experience, all existing (and coming) scenarios will gain benefit from this, and then I get 1 extra free scenario which is supercool". So, yeah, I'd get those, without any doubt

You are both right about the goal of the game to be a board game instead of a miniatures game.

And thanks Julia to make me see the point about the molds and the real purpose of those expansions that is to expanse the gaming experience.

Thanks to you two :-)

The sculpts were probably done years ago as part of the premium range, but never released due to poor demand.

The quality is far below current standards.

Any new expansions with premium range monsters will have similar issues.

I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in my disappointment with these miniatures. The peg to base fit is horrible and for the $100 price tag I expected better.

A lot of mine don't fit great either. I don't have the same skill set that some do with miniatures so I don't really know if 'trimming' them would be a good idea for me or just live with how they are. I wouldn't mind paying for a few at a time here and they for much higher quality ones.

I was expecting the minis to be on par with Descent, or Imperial Assault... similar game design (game tiles), but mini quality is not even close.... at all.

That is exactly what I would have expected. I'm such a huge fan of most of the FFG games and products but these miniatures are such a big disappointment. I'm very sad !

Reading the forum, and I am glad I am not the only one disappointed with the quality of the miniatures. I was expecting more for my $100. But that being said, the game it self is amazing. So far we have played the first scenerio twice and enjoyed it both times. I think I can overlook the miniature quality because of the rest of the experience in the board game. And that the main focus of the game is its story and not its miniatures. I am buying both tile and miniature packs as soon as they are released. But I am still disappointed with the miniatures.

Yeah mini quality is pretty meh especially for $100 but I figure a lot of that is a hidden cost for developing the app.

I simply play with the colorful tokens that have art on them unlike the dull grey minis that take up too much space. I wish they made this game like Eldritch Horror. We could have even more content instead of the minis.

Yeah honestly I'm considering taking the monster tiles out of their holsters if I physically can since the models aren't great, take up too much space, keep falling out of the bases, and the art on the tiles is better.

I putted my minis for monsters in a different box and I'm playing only with monster tokens. It's still looks good, and can still see the pictures for every monster. It's looks better then those awful minis.

I wasn't shocked at the miniature quality, but then I own first edition so... I knew what I was getting into. The way I see it, CMON are knocking it out of the park with miniature quality at the moment, and FFG were never "that" good. I mean... let's be honest, the Descent miniatures aren't brilliant. In fact I'm going through re-basing my Descent hero miniatures onto 25mm Renedra bases and clipping off the old bases is a nightmare. They're too soft! But at least the MoM miniatures can be re-based without first cutting away the old base.

So... I re-based my MoM miniatures. As it stands (no pun intended) I used the following, taking into account the 1e stuff too: 60mm Renedra (round) for Star Spawn and Shoggoths. 40mm Renedra (round) for Cthonians, Deep Ones, Riots and Hunting Horrors. 25mm Renedra for everything else. I simply clipped the pegs and trimmed excess, then super glued them on. Now here is where I went against my GW history and used super glue. FFG plastics are soft. They do not work very well with standard plastic glue, so try using a tiny dab of super glue instead. The smaller bases fixed the old issue of taking up too much space on the board, and super glue fixed the issue of falling apart.

FFG haven't quite got their miniatures down yet, but I'm sure they will one day, and let's be honest... there's worse out there!! More and more board game companies seem to be going with a harder plastic these days, and that's good. I mean, compare CMON's original Zombicide miniatures to the Black Plague stuff... the original minis were soft, warped, and didn't hold the detail. FFG will follow suit someday, but also keep in mind that softer plastics withstand more abuse. MoM miniatures will fall out of their bases from time to time (use super glue and they won't) but if you dropped a Deep One he would bounce, not snap apart.

I'd rather have the MoM quality of miniatures over something like Shadows of Brimstone. Gorgeous miniatures, but hot **** they are brittle!!
