Is the Shadow Caster really as good as seems?

By dewbie420, in X-Wing

I'm starting to think it's pretty **** awesome.

Yeah.

probably.

well...

mabey...

oh wait who cares

fang fighter.

eh

"best" is a meaningless term without further context

when you specifically compare PTL + EU + Dengar/k4 Ventress/Ketsu against similar costing ships, ie Kath and IG-88b, you notice two big things

1.) Kath and IG-88b will win every dice trade against you . No if ands or buts, they simply output more damage and the aggressor tanks it far more effectively than you do

2.) the shadow caster (and its arc) are more mobile, in part thanks to the fact that a well played mobile arc gives you a freedom of movement without sacrificing your shots

so, the Shadowcaster is only going to be as good as the player handling it. IT WILL NOT TRADE DICE WELL AT ALL .

but if you're a crafty, scummy bastard that can abuse your added mobility and the tricks of your pilot abilities (especially Ventress' stress to deny mods and limit opponent maneuver options, especially on the aggressor; ESPECIALLY when it works while in b2b where the aggressor can't shoot you), then yeah; "best" ship

I still say Asajj, ptl, tactician, two slicers and gyro upgrade and you're laughing

You can only use one slicer per turn. Having two doesnt help

two slicers would be completely pointless since theyre an action and not simply an effect.

Swap one for the chute. Done.

nah, it's a little too expensive, and not very customizable, but it looks fun to fly

Slicer + Feedback might be fun.

Gyro almost seems like an auto-include to me. It basically makes you a PWT for 2 points.

Sabine and Ventress are very good.

The other two are unlikely to see competitive play.

Ketsu can get to PS 9 for the PS bid, and the automatic Tractor token could be very good.

Really want to try Ventress though.

Ketsu will be stronger than you realize.

note that's not how PWTs work

at all

not to mention it triggers during the end phase, ie AFTER all shots have been made and after it's way to late to do anything about not having the right target in arc

it's for planning ahead, something PWTs rarely if ever have to do, and giving you maneuver flexibility by freeing you from having to do the rotate mobile arc action

I must ask... How good does it seem? Not entirely impressed myself.

I agree the end phase makes it a nice option but only when you plan your attack angle appropriately. Once you 3 hard into the action you better set that mobile arc to the correct flank.

It also competes with Engine Upgrade, which is basically an auto include on large bases with PS6+

EU, K4/Dengar, and Push will get you arc with modified attacks on almost anything, and gives you more defensive options. Swap EU for Gyros and you can still get attacks but I feel like you'll find yourself in front of more attacks than you like.

basically

EU is gold on Ketsu and Ventress, who can both abuse their lowish ps to large base bum rush boost block opposing pilots, allowing easy triggers of their abilities

Ventress can stress people in b2b, avoiding unfavorable dice trades and preventing them on the following turn. Stressed brobot? hah; no shot from you next turn!

It's a weird ship.

It's also, by far , one of the fastest ships in the game. I sure hope that the lore backs it up, because you wouldn't tell by looking, eh?

I'm sure it'll have a couple of useful builds evolve as time goes by, but man, it's weird . And, dare I say it, just a little gimmicky.

Weird is good. It creates an enjoyable play space outside of mathwing minmax.

As a fan of the Firespray, I think I am going to like the Shadowcaster.

It's still just a firespray mostly.

> Ventress is good because she becomes scums best stress dealer. Which is very relevant because of BMST.

> Sabine may be decent cause there's potential to tank so much damage & builds end up in the low 40 point range which is cheaper than most scum named large ship builds. Sabine + K4 + 2xGlitterstim = 42 points

> Ketsu is unlikely top tier because expert pilots will avoid the narrow trigger conditions. You will explode netlisters though.

> the generic is 2-3 points overcosted :(

No native barrel roll or boost. Lacking 1 turns on a large base makes the board edge your enemy. A 5-K turn also means the board edge can be an issue. 3-K turn on non-engine firesprays is highly useful. The mobile arc may mean the K-turn just isn't an issue though. It looks like a yellow star trek
