Okay, I meant to post this earlier but new page disease made it pointless, but I just want to make it clear that my comment about the game was a joke. I didn't realize it could be taken as a sincere jab at the artwork, which I agree is a very good tone-setter for newcomers.
A sign of things to come....
I don't mind that the image is an old card, because who doesn't like it? Really?
Edited by KubernesI like that all the promo art so far is so understated. They'll probably ramp up the "action shots" as it gets closer to release.

What, the subtleties of language not getting conveyed well through the internet? I've never heard of such a thing. ![]()

There's still no new artwork from FFG. Seems the use recycled stuff only. For me it's important because i want to know what kind of stylistic they want to use in this game. As you've noticed every LCG has its own graphic style from beginning till end.

Fair point. It just didn't occur to me because my joke wasn't about the art necessarily, but the fact that there was no real information other than that they intend to keep the existing title logo. ![]()

I think that's fine for now. I expect them to really put out their material when they are ready to reveal the game. I wouldn't even mind a few older pieces of artwork getting reused (if appropriate).
Edited by KubernesThey reused arts from Game of Thrones throughout editions, so it's likely we will see old AEG art reused.

I think if anything the art that they used for the announcement is providing an answer for your question. They seem to be keeping the style of the game under aeg. Even the banner that was in gencon may as well have had an AEG logo on the bottom.
As pointed out already also, GOT kept the same style, and if you look back on the older netrunner cards they have definitely kept in the style of that also.
In fairness to aeg, whatever you can say about some of the questionable card environments at the time and some design issues, their presentation, and in particular card art ended up being really top tier towards the end. I think FFG recognise this and would be mad not to piggy back off it.
They also own the art assets-including the stuff for cards we haven't even seen yet.

Indeed, Except for the pre gold stuff from when wotc were in charge.
I'm more curious to see if they will continue the same (theme wise) design path as was laid out.
because of the recycled art used, possibly the way gold is collected will remain the same.

whoa there mr fantastic, thats a bit of a stretch. they used that art because its seppun hill. not because its a holding. i wouldn't read ANYTHING into it w/r/t the mechanics
L5R-relevant bit starts at the 10-minute mark.

Not true for L5R through the AEG era.
Don't get me wrong, i want to see the art, and i want this new L5R to be graphically coherent. But it sure wasn't graphically coherent in the past.

That's i was talking about. I wrote that LCG have coherent graphic aesthetic. CCG stuff was always a mix of various styles through these years and everyone could find something for himself. In case of LCG if you don't like its style from the start there's no chances it will change till the end.

I'm a bit mixed about it. On the one hand, I would for the game to have a great core of artists for the game to develop that coherent, collective aesthetic. On the other hand, I think there could be room for some cards to have a different style or aesthetic. Not so much that its very distracting. Unless it's William O'Connor.

God I hope not. L5Rs "style" has been all over the place and it wasn't ever really defined. They had some great artist over the years, but a unified art direction was never a thing. I mean they even credited outsource graphic design studios on a lot of their art during the last few arcs.
SWLCG has a bit of a mix of styles, particularly evident in the latest force pack. I would prefer if they keep a few artists focused on each game, perhaps making the ones best at landscapes do that and so on. The art is rarely bad, but inconsistency can make people think it's bad.
Edited by evilidlerAmusing discussion direction, when half the complaints about Magic the Gathering's art the last 5-6 yeas have been that it's too consistent and samey.
Can't please everyone either way.
I personally prefer a variety of art-styles in my card games. In L5R in particular, I really enjoyed the original Sensei art direction, where they were all drawn in a distinctly different visual style from the rest of the art in the sets in order to set them apart as a card type.
Edited by IsawaChucklesI think with consistent art people mean "consistent per group" and not "consistent per game". Like, each faction should have its own art style and the artists should stick to it. No artistic rollercoaster like the Shiba being 25% generic orange samurai, 25% over-the-top magical samurai, 25% something-in-between, and 25% oc design - they should be 100% something-in-between or whatever you want, but it should be 100%. Then we can have, say, the Matsu that is 100% something else, being quite different than the Shiba but consistently so. Once the per-faction art is established, we can go for time period differences, so a Shiba from the Dawn of the Empire will look differently than a Shiba from the Age of Exploration.

I guess it's a matter of taste then! I quite like the differing styles in a game. I don't want everything to follow the same theme or design, I find it boring. I personally think it works this way because different factions have different requirements for the art and theme of their art.
Just a case of horses for courses.
