Black Market Slicer Tools (ie holy crap I don't have to ***** about RNG)

By ficklegreendice, in X-Wing

One thing to note is that it has two downsides to justify its low cost.

The first is a 50% chance of triggering.

The second is a 100% chance of removing a stress token from the enemy ship: you open up Soontir's dial by hitting him with this.

Wait.....I was thinking Black Sun Slicer Tools was a Black Sun Slicer Crew card. It's an Illicit? Sweet!!!!!

Muhaha! I have 5 Z-95's already.

How is that Flying Casual you meta setter :-p

stress is only removed on successful damage

and I can't name any fel players that'd enjoy having an opponent triggered e-baffle

Considering you can only do this action after his dial is set, it doesn't really change anything.

Initial thoughts:

  1. This helps everyone that has a weakness to arc dodging aces.
  2. Don't overcomplicate trying to make bad ships good with Slicers. Bad ships are still bad.
  3. Triple Scouts just became way stronger. (see #1)

This will be a thing.

    • Rigged Cargo Chute OR Slicers

Rigged Cargo Chute is a little odd, if I read it correctly, in that it essentially just priced all future cargo upgrades as costing 1 point.

opening up soontir's dial in exchange for damage would not be a benefit to him. It would put a time limit on his head like some Black Mage in Final Fantasy just cast Doom on him or something. He has (3) Turns Left to Kill the Slicer...failed... now he has (2) Turns Left to kill the slicer... failed again... etc etc.

Either the Aces rip the slicer users apart or they have a timer over their head. Range2 is pretty **** wide

So... all those Scum Stressball builds are gonna get countered by.... more Scum but now with anti-stress flavour?

That sounds like an interesting meta! Oh, wait. Exploding asteroids. Never mind...

Slicer + Boba (Crew) = A Very Scary 2 points ....

You like that Heavy Laser Canon ... Too bad!
You like those Engine Upgrades ....Goodbye!
Nice title you have there ... Not anymore!

You'd need a Slicer, Boba and Greedo for that to work, though. Possible!

You don't really open Soontir's dial. The stress is only removed if you succed, so if you failed all your attempt, Soontir is still stressed, and I don't think any Soontir player will takes the gamble of doing a white maneuver while stressed, even with BMS around.

slicer wouldnt kick off boba unless it was turned faceup somehow in the dealing.

And if you activated after soontir (gasp!) and sliced him it would open his dial, but like i mentioned when referring to Latts card...that gives him what ONE move he would like more than usual? 1hards would be open, if youre trading shots he doesnt want his 3banks hes either going to 5fwd and gtfo or 2bank/2hard to clear/keep target on sight.

And its not like it makes much of a difference if Soontir's dial is "open" or not. Interceptors have one of the most stress-friendly dials in the game still.

Nevermind, I re-read Boba and it specifically said "After preforming an attack". Oh well.. The Slicer is an action, not an attack.

The nastiest thing about slicer tools is it doesn't remove the stress unless it succeeds, so this doesn't open their dial at all.

Would it have killed them to rotate the stuff so we can read it?

Would it kill YOU to load it in an image viewer and rotate it yourself?

this should have been 1 use only I think.

this should have been 1 use only I think.

Question... do you play Imperial Aces?

this should have been 1 use only I think.

if the damage were guaranteed, sure

probably won't do jack

50/50 chance is 'probably won't do jack'?

You and I understand probabilities differently.

Guys... Why has nobody realized the gross combo yet? YT-XX00 with the illicit giving mod, slicer, stresshog flying shotgun and giving plenty of stress all around. Unless I've missed something big this seems ridiculous.

not really

a yt without EU is just kinda sad

And you're not really opening the dial anyway unless the tool is at PS 10. The order of events is this:

Previous Turn: Soontir Pushes the Limit, gains Stress.

Current turn Planning: Soontir has stress, sets green maneuver.

Current Turn Activation: Lower PS ships with Slicer target Soontir and if hits. Soontir loses stress.

IE, Soontir gains no benefit from this even when taking damage unless he has two stress. That's pretty much true of every ship, assuming they're setting a green maneuver.

eh...

see, in the specific case of torp scouts I'd much rather have feedback

this is simply because they can b-roll into blocks instead of gambling on slicers

1 use on a chance to do something even for 0pts would be terrible considering its still eating the illicit slot.

because FFG finally got their **** together with the proper pricing and payoff of a card that probably won't do jack :D

from our good friends at Gencon, we know Black Market Slicer Tools are a 1 point illicit upgrade

they read ACTION: choose a stressed enemy ship at Range 1-2 and roll 1 attack die. On a HIT or CRIT result, remove 1 stress token and deal it one face down damage card

this, my friends, is FFG learning from their mistakes (While simultaneously committing the atrocity that is r3, but we can't have it all eh?)

it's random garbage at a strict opprotunity cost (an ACTION), yes, BUT it's fairly priced at 1 point and the effect, if you get it, is stellar. This cuts right through enemy green dice AND shields (so PGS, you better be happy for having both palp and rebel regen neutered in one card)

best of all, it'll encourage all those lovely little Casters to use their lovely little Rigged Holds to set up some nice self contained combos with their two illicit slots :)

I eagerly await the tales of how you all killed Dengaroo using nothing but black market slicer tools (the poor bastard can't even retaliate because they're not an attack!)

Can't wait to kill your ass in 6 coinflips on average haha. Phantoms and Corran in only 4 haha.

I wonder what the best Boba Proton Bomb list would be if you put Slicer Tools into it. Let's see, my 59 point Imperial Boba would be 60 points as Scum. Hound's Tooth with Experimental Interface, Slicer Tools, and Saboteur? You can do that with one of these ShadowCasters.

It would have been nice if Acewing was no more instead of FFG making a band-aid fix card. But this is FFG and that's how they do things. Whatever.

I can't wait to kill off an Imperial players Acewing with these and see how greedy he gets. Oh, playing against my list is an NPE? So sad.
