The Raven's Claw

By SabineKey, in X-Wing

Hey, all.

I've recently been thinking about how the Raven's Claw would work in X-Wing and wanted some other opinions.

For those who don't know, the Raven's Claw is the replacement for the Moldy Crow after the events of Dark Forces: Jedi Knight (Kyle Katarn's 2nd game). Kyle and Jan use it through the rest of their games.

The main idea I had in mind for it is a high speed, highly maneuverable support ship. Most of the support ships already in the game (like the HWK, ARC, Lambda, etc) are rather slow and aren't that maneuverable. The Raven's Claw would provide the Rebels a support ship that can actually run away from the enemy while boosting it's team mates.

STATS:

2 Attack primary weapon, possibly 3 if we want it to contribute more in the offense department.

2 for Defense. While a 3 would be better for what I have in mind, I'm not sure the chassis would support it.

3 Hull. To me, the Raven's Claw looks less solid structurally than the HWKs, so I'm dropping it down a hull.

2 shields. I think the ship should still be around 5 hit points.

ACTIONS:

Focus; obviously.

Target Locket; pretty standard.

Boost; with the engine design, I think the boost action wouldn't be far fetched. Also, it would allow for repositioning to get a friendly ship back into ability range. Also it would benefit from Autothrusters.

Evade?; Again, this would aid the overall theme I'd want for the ship, but I'm not sure it warrants it.

UPGRADE SLOTS:

Crew; it's suppose to have a co-pilot and crew slots are a staple of support ships.

Torpedo; While I don't remember it mentioned in the games, the Raven's Claw Wookieepedia article says it has torpedo launchers, so I'm rolling with it.

Systems?; No concrete reason, just a possible upgrade to give the ship more flavor.

Elite Pilot Talent; for appropriate pilots.

Note- I didn't add a turret slot because, unlike the HWK, I see no sign of a turret on the Raven's Claw.

DIAL:

Here, I'm thinking something similar to a E-Wing, with extra greens on 4 Straight and 1 Banks.

PILOTS:

Jan Ors

Kyle Katarn

Jaden Korr (Kyle's Jedi Apprentice); PS 4 or 5. No firm ability in mind, maybe provide some sort of token retention among friendly ships. Probably EPT.

Rebel Freelancer; PS 1 non-unique.

Now, I have not found an official make for the Raven's Claw, which could mean it is a custom ship. If FFG wanted to go that route, I'd say switch out the non-unique pilot and put in Rosh Penin, Kyle's other apprentice. For him, I'd figure a PS of 2 or 3 and some sort of high risk for high reward ability, due to his story. No EPT for him.

So, that's what I got so far. I would love to hear what you agree and disagree with in my mockup for the Raven's Claw. If you have ideas for abilities, titles, upgrade cards, etc, please feel free to share.

It looks like a cross between a HWK and an SR-71.

It looks like a cross between a HWK and an SR-71.

I would absolutely LOVE to see this brought back. I really hope Rogue One contains some kind of reference to these two heroes of the rebellion, even if it's just name-dropping "Kyle and Jan" or "Katarn and Ors", etc.

Katarn, Ors, and Rendar are the biggest reasons I went from Star Wars "fan" to "fanatic", and with all EU content being reinstated into the continuity, I have hope that these two will be seen again... their timeline fits perfectly within the scope of Rebels, after all.

Now, If only we could get a new Jedi Knight game, fusing the physics of Force Unleashed with the combat mechanics of Platinum Game's Metal Gear Rising!!!

I generally like the look of it (though on the frontal cross-section, those engines look much bigger relative to the fuselage than the over view-angles).

For the Dial, I'd be thinking something more like the Defender, but with red 3-T-rolls rather than the K-turn. (and perhaaaps dropping the 1-Turns and changing 1-Banks to red).

Stats (Att 2 is fine) and Action bar seem logical (but maybe not Evade)...

...though I might be tempted to leave off Boost, and instead have a 'R-Claw' only mod that gave access to the SLAM action ( not free) after revealing a 2, 3 or 4-speed manoeuvre...

...if you want Boost take EU, else SLAM is an alternative (but not both)... or VT's for a 3rd re-pos option.

Agree about the Crew (1 only) or System slot - sorta needs them to play a "support" role. If system there needs to be a viable "area-effect" option (and I'm inclined towards that approach, as using Crew might encroach on the ARC's space). And Torp's, heck why not, I think all Rebel ship design starts with Torp-toobs and builds out from there.

Could be a good support ship that can get to where it needs to be, when it needs to (like reserve cavalry).

it should have 5 crew slots and you can drop a guy with claw lightsabers and another guy who can shoot force lasers out of his eyes.

I like the 2/2/3/2 stat line with Focus, TL, and Boost actions. Upgrades of Crew, Torps, and Elites (on Jan and Kyle) make sense. Jaden (PS 4) without an Elite and perhaps even going 1/3/5 on Generic pilots (5 getting an Elite) could work. I'd like to see both a Raven's Claw title and a generic support title, but it does seem a pretty unique ship.

I'd probably want the price to be around 17 or 18 for a PS1.

The title for SLAM could work well, especially with the Advanced SLAM Mod. Could be handy for getting the ship out of trouble and you'd miss the no attack like you would with a K-Wing's turret. I think the boost would allow for more flexibility, but, again, the SLAM would give the Raven's Claw a little more flavor and give that mechanic more of a showing.

I would be happy with a rehash of Dark Forces using Battlefront's graphics/sounds.

That all seems to fit pretty well thematically and balance wise. I'd go with the 2 attack rather than 3 since Wookiepedia lists it as only having 2 laser canons and given how well-hidden they are they can't be unusually big like say the ARC-170's. A relatively fighter-like dial makes sense, since the ship is mostly engines. I also like the idea of no generic pilots, since custom ships are very much a thing both in Legends and new-canon, and this might as well be one since nobody ever said it's not and there's no information about a manufacturer and no indication of other ships of its type. Plus, it has a HWK-like layout for the cockpit (you have very little forward visibility and presumably some sort of holographic display or flat-panel monitor in the cockpit is the actual main viewing method for the pilot). That hardly seems like it would been a widely-used setup, but it's what Jan and Kyle are used to so they might go with it on a ship they had custom-made. Or even if it's not custom, it's surely not common since again we never saw any sister ships.

One thing critical thing is missing, though: point costs for the pilots. With the improved mobility and firepower, it has to cost more than a HWK with equivalent pilots, but by how much?

Finally! A fan made ship that isn't god like in stats and abilities. I would go for 2 ATT, 3 ATT ships seem to be dedicated attack ships, this is a spec ops ship, so I would definitely give it a sys upgrade.

What would have for the RC's title ability?

I really like what you have done here and I hope FFG is listening.

looks like a HWK on steroids...... I think that thing can go in a straight line and thats about it and doing slow will stress the motors :)

Trouble is tge HWK290 was released into the game before Disney got Star Wars since we have seen a lack of anything from the old extended universe. So I highly doubt we will ever see this ship.

But they are building the new EU very fast in the HWK is now canon again (hmmmmm I think i need to do that pain job)

Expectt other similar-but-not names and concepts; rumour has it they had licencing issues.

Jan Ors is now Jan Ursa. So the originals are now canned.

I have been wondering if that's the case, but I'm not wholly convinced. What licences would be outstanding from characters created by the company that was purchased by Disney?

I must admit, I haven't looked into point cost that much, as I'm not sure how to estimate the value of slots, dials, and the like. Off the top of my head, I'd say a blanket 3 point price hike for named pilots, making Jan 28 and Kyle 24. Either that, or look to the T-65 X-wings for similar price ranges.

Finally! A fan made ship that isn't god like in stats and abilities. I would go for 2 ATT, 3 ATT ships seem to be dedicated attack ships, this is a spec ops ship, so I would definitely give it a sys upgrade.

2 Att seems to be the general consensus and I have to agree. 2 Att will keep it on task and fits the chassis of the ship. The more I think about it, the more I think it should have the systems slot.

Not sure how thematic it is, but for the title, I was wondering about an ability to share your crew cards with other ships at a certain range, probably for a stress. there's plenty of crew cards that wouldn't work to share, but there are still plenty that would be awesome (recon specialist, gunner, Nien Numb). That's a pretty hefty ability, so I'd say the price for the title would start at 3, possibly going higher.

Thanks!

...I always despised the Raven's Claw. Its big pod-racer engines and confusingly slim and long hull just... Never seemed very inspired to me, as a design. I never felt like it was, or ever could be, a proper successor to The Moldy Crow.

I despise this ship, completely and utterly. It is my N1 Starfighter.

But, it's cool to see someone put a fair amount of thought into a ship like this, regardless of how I feel about it. It should definitely turn like ass, but go very straight, very fast.

It's no replacement for the Moldy Crow (HWK) But... It's there. I can see it being in as a "super HWK" somewhere down the line.

Erso. Jyn Erso is the character in Rogue One.

And the more feedback I'm getting, the more I agree that something closer to a Defender dial (minus the white k-turn) makes sense for the ship.

Agree 100% on Kyle and Jan. The Dark Forces series was such a huge part of my late childhood/early teenage years. No experience with Rendar, myself. I'm super excited for the possibility of seeing them in official content now that Thrawn in in.

Were Kyle and Jan to come back into the fold, I'd prefer if Kyle remained a muggle, instead of just a guy with a lightsaber and a few questions. He should keep his distrust of bartenders with bad grammar though.
