X-Wing or WW2 Wings of Glory

Anyone played WoG? How's it compare to X-Wing?

All the planes look the same. At least in the wwi version.

Movement cards are significantly more fiddly than templates, and the model quality has slipped over time.

The two are similar, in that you choose a manuever, but in WoG you choose one turn ahead so the maneuver you perform THIS turn is the one you chose LAST turn. It makes you think ahead a lot more than X-Wing does.

The other main difference is the way combat is resolved. If the enemy plane is in your arc and in range (which is pretty short - about X-Wing range 2) then you draw so many damage tokens randomly. The tokens either have a number, which is the amount of damage points the target suffers, or a symbol which indicates some other problem, similar to critical hits.

The manuevers are smaller, so it takes a little longer for a plane to turn around to get back in the fight, but its fun. My son and I have played it a little, but its been a while.

Both if you can swing it. Im already all in on X wing, armada, Imperial Assault and DnD attack wing so Im full up. Looks interesting though. Could just buy base set play and see how you like both then decide.

It doesn't have the same flavor. The models look nice but if you want to make turn other than a Koiogran it takes the hole map. You have to do a short straight before a Koiogran so it's telegraphed. To be honest, it's like someone saying if you like XBOX 360 you probably will like Atari. They just don't really compare but some like that historical stuff

There is always Age of Sails as well if you want ship battles using the same or similar movement templates as x wing. Honestly Age of Sails is different enough from x wing and DnD attack wing to hold my interest.

Edit - Sails of Glory... not age of sails

They're both 2D games for a 3D battle.

I think a better system using that card mechanic is 'Sails of Glory'. That it ends up much "slower" (rate at which table top is covered by ships) ends up being thematically perfect. Not to mention the maneuver cards having a smaller set of options - again, sensible given the subject matter.

Additionally, one weak spot of the Wings of Glory compared to X-Wing is that lack of...well, decisions. You only have one type of attack, there is never any reason NOT to attack if you can, you are just choosing your maneuver one turn in advance...that's it. X-Wing's addition of a wide variety of pilot skills and upgrades immediately changes the game nearly entirely - but moreso than that is the 'action' step. That makes a HUGE difference in how the games play, in that the flavor of the combat phase can be completely upended by a well (or poorly) chosen action.

Which is one of the nice things about 'Sails of Glory' - it has that action step. Basically, the ships have crews, and you assign the crews to do things - fire port broadside, raise the sails, lower sails, put out fire, repair mast, etc. If you didn't plan an action, you can't do that thing, so it definitely adds that missing decision step into the picture.

I got to play in the Epic (epic-lke?) WoG event at Origins and enjoyed it. The models were cool and the rules were simple. I found the token damage draw a bit odd, but whatever.

Would have bought it ... but the company wasn't selling the WW2 base/intro kits or any other way to get the WW2 rules at Origins. So I had to pass.

I collect sails of glory and play it with my daughter I like it. Didn't want to get into wings of glory but when I went to my local store he was selling them all for 50% off so may go down and buy them all. I play for the games I stay for the miniatures.

I played WoG WW1 before getting into X-Wing. I like both games, but the drawbacks to the WoG games is no 'upgrades' as it's a historical game. In the same line there are no point values (some attempts have been made) so it isn't a balanced tournament game at all.

Still **** fun though. I run a school games club and we are roughly split down the middle with X-Wing and WoG.

RoV

All I remember is that one of the damage cards was an automatically destroyed result.

Should they introduce that to X-Wing?

Sails of Glory looks cool but I want to find somewhere to play it a few times before spending any money on it.

Since we're talking about games that are kind of similar to X-Wing, I'd like to mention Tail Feathers. It's set in the same world as Mice and Mystics which kind of has a Redwall or Mouseguard thing going. You've got rats fighting against mice. There are units mounted on birds that fly and fight in a way that is kind of a mix between Armada and X-Wing. There are ground units that can fight the flying units and each other or be sent on a few different types of missions. There are some interesting mechanics in this game that give it a different feel from X-Wing or Armada while still feeling somewhat familiar. Plaid Hat really nailed the theme on this game while still having a fun game that has some tactical depth to it.

The game is kind of new and there aren't any expansions out for it yet. The base set comes with a good amount of unpainted miniatures. They are nice sculpts that look awesome painted. There are cards that allow you to use the minis from Mice and Mystics as units in this game.

Great info everyone!

Nope. They look as different as their RL counterparts do.

I don;t have it, but I do want to pick it up. There's supposed to be a new Battle of Britain themed starter set coming out soon, so i'll probably get that.

I started with wings of glory due to my love for ww2 era airplanes but switched to x-wing for few reasons mainly because there is bigger player base and much more tournaments for x-wing, second i find the template & dial and dices form of play much more user friendly and fun than the maneuver damage tokens in WoG and am star wars fan to so the choice was simple :)

Is WoG an active game system? I thought it went down. Or was that the WWI version?

The problem for WoG is longevity and finding players. I think it's easier to sucker in new players and find a gaming scene for X-wing than WoG.

No Bumps. Still Ruined by turrets and rear Arcs.

i want a mad max style of car game using this system.... i started to make one as a x-wing clone but got lazy

Plus, you'd find that FFG already did one 13 years ago (IE., before even 'Wings of War' came out).

my issue with all ww2 or any historical miniatures game is they are completely locked on design and methods.

Fantasy or scifi games can throw shoehorns in that make no sense realistically because "magic" or "future tech" allows it. Modern stuff cant do that, and as a result you get games like Flames of War which is oddly popular but i look at it and go "they all look the same....but thats because they are SUPPOSE to look the same"

The differences between a lot of vehicles (planes or tanks) is usually subtle, with a few that are drastically different but still follow the same scheme of design.

The company that produced the game went bust, but the game designers kept the IP, so Wings of War was re-released as Wings of Glory. Same thing, WW1 and WW2 versions.

I thought Wings of War (the original version) was an FFG game. When they stopped it the designers went elsewhere and released it as Wings of Glory.
