Costs for everything. Where to find?

By Nightmaster, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I am at the moment running a PBeM sandbox campaign of Star Wars. Since its a sandbox game I am in need of a list of costs for several things, from basic equipments to more exoteric things, like, buying a house or a parcel of land in a planet.

The point is that since its a sandbox game, the players need to keep tabs on their money and possesions because the adventure (and money) would not be coming dancing to sit in their laps. Also I, as a GM, like to make my players "count their coins" (an brazilian expression) and work hard to acquire money and other things.

I wish to ask you guys in the forums for directions on where I can find those things, be then in the books or other source.

Thanks in advance for any help

Just for equipment, all the prices should be listed in the tables in the gear section of any book. Weapon prices are usually listed in the weapon tables, ship prices are listed in the profile. Homestead/business rules can be found in Far Horizons. Hidden base rules (for Rebel bases) are found in Desperate Allies. That might be what you're looking for.

Not sure what you mean by "sandbox game", but in terms of equipment that is not listed in the books, it's really GM discretion. Use common sense and some similar rules to what we might have here in real life:

Is the house you're buying in New York or Detroit? That will have a big impact on its price. Same thing with this game: are the players buying a condo on Coruscant or a plot of farmland on Saleucami?

Have you had a chance to look through the Resources thread? It has lots of good stuff, fan-made and otherwise.

For example, the resource Operational Costs has some neat ideas about such costs on a Starship.

I generally agree with you about PCs working hard for their money. I don't throw money at my players either.

The problem is to come up with a reasonable basis price to work with it.

The rules in Far Horizons say a farm, with a 10 square kilometer area cost 50.000 credits. I find that not reasonable since that's a lot of area and cost a lot less than a starship. If you follow the rules and the players start with a homestead instead of a ship the entire cost is halved.

What I want is a way to stabilish a galactic average price for houses and such, in the same way that in the Far Horizons you have a table displaying the basic wages for several occupations and the rules say you should adjust those amounts based on the location.

There are millions of worlds out there. There's got to be somewhere with cheap real estate to plop your farm down.

That should give you a pretty good start. If you need something that is not covered by any of the above resources, check out the old WEG and WotC books, because they have a lot of stuff that has not (yet) found it’s way into FFG SWRPG.

As for things like housing or farms, look at costs here on this planet. What costs a million bucks in prime real estate in San Francisco might cost less than $100k in the middle of Nowhereville.

Likewise, prices in Star Wars are going to vary, greatly. If you’re in the Outer Rim, large amounts of land might not cost very much. If you’re near the Core Worlds, then you’d better be prepared to ransom an entire kingdom for a small plot.

So, it’s much more likely that you’re just going to have to figure things like that out on your own. We can give you some guidance, but there are just way too many variables involved to give you any hard-and-fast rules or tables to buy from.

I'd say that the price of real estate is whatever makes sense for the storyline. The PCs are flush with credits and have an extra 200K burning a hole in their pockets, want a homestead, and find the perfect spot on a key location. Well, guess what, it's going to cost about 200K.

Remember also when many countries were first settled, frontier land was often just given to anyone who asked, could be the same on some planets (though you'd still be paying travel cost). Of course, there would be very limited or no amenities for such a place.

I have take a look on my very old WEG Star Wars 2nd Edition Sourcebook and in page 101 there is a cost for rents and purchase of houses and land.

A simple house there cost between 750-1800+ credits per month if one decide to rent one and the price to buy a simple house is 35000 credits. A farm can be purchased from 1000-50000+ credits. Now my experience here in Brazil says that those numbers can be both accurate and wrong. Let me explain.

Brazil, despiste whatever the government says, is primary a agricultural country. The amount of land necessary to feed a family of 5 for one year is just one Hectare (10.000 m 2 ) and if you take into account crop rotation and land rest, a simple 5 hectares is enough to guarantee the family survival and provide enough production for then to have a profit even if small. The 10 square kilometers that the Rules in Far Horizons say that farm will have is equivalent to 1000 hectares and all that for simple 50000 credits. Now lets take into account the average wages that the Far Horizons book present in page 93.

A unskilled laborer can get at least 500 credits per month of salary. Discounting 25% of that amount as the book suggest to pay expanses like food and lodging and multiplying that value per 12 would yield 4500 credits per year in the pockets of the poor guy. In 12 years of labor that unskilled guy can get 54000 credits and that is more than enough to buy a 1000 hectare farm anywhere in the galaxy. See what I mean by saying that those prices are accurate and wrong at the same time?

Its true that land in a recently settled world would be cheap because that would be a incentive for new settlers to arrive, but outside of that land should never be that cheap and most of all the amount of land purchased should not be that much.
