Similar to the LotR LCG?

January: Sell the house and move into the car with your precious games.

I'll have to sell one of my livers again ;)

Hey guys,

I am brand new to the FFG community and hope you can help me. The only other FFG game I have is Imperial Assault. I have a difficult time getting games going so Ive been seriously considering picking up one of the LCG's to play solo. Im a huge LOTR fan; the LCG has been out for many years so I was worried it might be too late to get into. I was just about to pull the trigger when I saw the announcement for Arkham Horror LCG, which looks awesome! Do you guys think I should wait for this rather than getting into LOTR? I am a student and father so Im kind of on a budget, otherwise I would get both for sure! Help!

If you're new to advanced bg and on a budget, I'd suggest to wait for AH to be released. Mostly because in this way you'll be able to follow the game as it develops, without being forced to face a huge wall of already existing expansions and dive into two FAQ documents (one official, one unofficial) that LotR has

On the other hand, LotR is out now with lots of expansions, so you can complete a whole cycle at a time if you like it. They have constant reprints running, so I wouldn't worry about it being hard to catch up. They've said that once they run out of ideas they'll keep selling it as long as there is demand. Being more along the lines of a traditional board game model, it's likely to stay in print for years.

AHLCG is likely to follow a similar release model, perhaps even more streamlined (more like all saga expansions and nothing else), and there's no catching up since it's new, but initial releases may be slow. FFG follow the constipation model of releases :)

I dunno, LOTR was, to me anyway, not very intuitive: I got argaon and gimili to help me, but now the forces of mordor are getting stronger and I need to slay that spider, but I can't because i gotta explore, but I shouldn't because I need somebody to protect me and gah...

Flavorwise it fits the cthulhu setting better, and from what i've seen of AHLCG it seems more intuitive.

How about wait for the first reviews as an option?

Lord of the Rings LCG is AWESOME! ..... But.... is known for a steep learning curve, especially out of the core box. So can be difficult to get immersed straightaway (True I was hooked from game 1). maybe AH will be slightly more new-person friendly? Who knows? Reviews will tell :)

Christmas. My money is on All Hallows Eve. Just in time for Worlds weekend.

I am interested to see how they handle locations. IMHO locations are one of the weak points in LOTR LCG. It is not uncommon for multiple locations to be in the staging area at the same time (especially in multi-player), this can lead to the dreaded "Location Lock" problem. I prefer the way locations are handled in Warhammer Quest: TACG, only one location can be in play at a time. The location you travel to determines how many enemies/challenges you face. I think this could be further expanded to link the location you are at with specific enemies/treacheries/challenges, this seems like it would be a good way to enhance the thematic immersion of the game and eliminate some of the problems found in other similar games.

Isnt Samhain (Haloween) usually around the Arham Nights event thingy?? Be good for a release then

Folks, this is FFG. Fourth quarter means March.

LOL awesome hehe.

Though to be fair, look how soon after the MoM announcement the kit is hitting the stores :)

Yeah I don't think the old jokes apply anymore.

Thanks for your help guys! I think I'm going to pick up a core set of LOTR and see how it goes. December is a ways off, I don't know if I can wait till then to get into lcg's. Still, I'll definitely be picking this up too, budget be dammed!

Considering the only ffg games I own are Arkham Horror and LOTR LCG I can't wait to get my Mits on this!

Seems way different to LOTR too, but with a number of similarities. I just hope this core set isn't like LOTR where you felt compelled to buy 2 for those 3 copies of A Test of Will.

Seems like the perfect mythos for a solo card game too.

Hey all. Can't wait to get my hands on a copy (hello third LCG!). This game seems to really focus in on the RPG experience.

It's good to see another co-op/solo LCG. As someone who doesn't have many friends who play card/board games, this is the biggest selling point for me. I'm looking forward to it. :D

I don't think you'll regret this...LOTR is an amazing game and great fun solo. The theme feels so thick and very catered to in mechanics and gameplay. One of the nice things about jumping into a game deep into its life cycle is that there are a ton of community resources to help you out (Ill throw out a few links below). I got into LOTR fairly late, but was hooked very quickly. I took about 2 years to catch all the way up to present so it doesn't need to be done all at once. Arkham Horror LCG will be great to be in on the ground floor, but as you said December is pretty far off (and it will likely be even later knowing FFG).

The more I read about this game the more I realize it is very much what I was hoping both the Pathfinder and Warhammer ACGs were going to be. I cannot imagine ever falling out of love with LOTR, but I think this is going to be another great game and can't wait to add it to my gaming rotation.

I'm curious to see whether this will be a worlddwide release as per Mansions or not. Anyhoo, Arkham Nights sounds like the perfect venue for this game :)

Enjoy then! And in case, the LotR community on this very site is very friendly and active, so, come and join!

I was thinking the same thing. I almost went last year (for the first time), but it was my mother-in-law's 60th birthday party. This year I really hope to go. Between this, MoM 2nd Edition, and all the other great games, Arkham Nights will be a great time!

Don't want to open a new thread for this. But i asked FFG how many core sets will be needed for playsets.

The answer is two.

Fairly new to card games and not being a native english speaking person, could anyone explain me what is a "full playset" and why such a full playset require to buy more than one copy of an LCG coreset ? Thanks to all :-)

In most (all?) of the LCGs there are usually a few cards that there are only 1 or 2 copies of in the core set. However, usually the deck building rules allow for up to 3 copies of a card...so if you want to have enough to have 3 copies of those particular cards you need to buy multiple core sets. These are usually pretty powerful cards as well.

The fact that FFG answered with 2 core only means for me that probably no more than 2 copies of each card are allowed / deck (then clearly core set may have 2x each card and the limit be 3 so that actually you need 1.5 sets but this is another story)
