Black "Whatever" Slicer: a Missed Opportunity

By Caboose2900, in X-Wing

The Shadowcaster does a lot of focus on tractor beam tokens and slicers hack/mess up computer systems.

Looks like it could also be something along the lines of choose 1 ship, range something, if you roll a boom/kaboom, add a tractor beam token or an ion token maybe?

With all this talk of stress inducing damage tactics, I think its high time the unsung hero of the Rebellion finally gets his time in the lime light, I am of course referring to the one, the only, JEK PORKINS.

Ooooh... Or another thought- Weapons disabled token?

That has never stopped us before.

No, no, it hasn't. You are completely correct there.

But some of us feel that Correct is different to Right .

What if it's (dramatic pause) One. Time. Use. Like so many other illicits seem to be nowadays. I still stand by my regard that this set would have been perfect for an illicit extra munitions. This ship is just asking for it.

Why do people think illicit and not a crew? To be fair, I think it'd be interesting if it illicit, but just curious why people think it's more likely? Seems like a person based on the text.

Because scum hasn't had a non-faction specific crew in an expansion ever.

A person doesn't mean crew. I mean there is a person in Glitterstim and that's not a crew.

But, it is in a spot next to crew in the preview, so that is a good indicator for crew.

Idk, just thoughts.

It could be either..

Crew would probably be "Black Sun Slicer Tech"

Modification/Illicit would be "Black Market Slicer Tool"

If we're reaching for logic, the upgrade slot order on the Shadow Caster is

- EPT

- Crew

- Illicit

The order of fanned upgrade cards:

- EPT

- BLACK ____ SLICER _____

- Crew

- Illicit

- Modification/Title

If this order says anythingm then Slicer is probably a Crew (with the very off-chance it's an EPT).

If it's one die per stress token on the chosen ship, bye bye Dengaroo!

For the absolute Troll-level hilarity this could bring to a game, I would LOVE if it did that. Especially if its *not* one time use...

"Oh, you crazy Fel with your range 1 shot behind me with your focus and TL...No weapons for you! Come back 1 round!"

might be something akin to slicer tools in epic.

Someone is stressed? Hack'm. Damage!

Would gimp every single PtL user in the game.

I approve.

Well, to an extent. If it's an illicit it will be limited to scum. If it's a crew, it will be limited to big ships.

Neither of those things are true.

Rebels are getting illicits with HotR, and there are many small ships with crew:

HWK (2 factions)

Mist Hunter

B-wings

ARC 170

TIE shuttles

TIE phantoms

Crew slot on phantom might as well not exist lol.

I mean, it does see SOME variation but its almost completely dominated by Tactician or Gunner. Though when i run Echo i prefer Recon Spec in there for double focus goodness.

You forgot Agent Kallus as well is really popular there.

That is an obscene amount of Jam.

Is it raspberry?

I don't know that I've ever seen Tactician on a Phantom and I rarely see Recon Spec. It's usually Kallus, Gunner, Intel Agent, or Rebel Captive.

As a black man, I demand to know what exactly is getting sliced.

Also, what's the deal with the two Tactical Jammers? Like, does FFG even play their own game? That card is a turd, not justifying one, let alone two in a new release.

I think I'm just salty that I'm gonna have 8 freaking Tac Jammers if I buy 4 Shadow Casters. That is an obscene amount of Jam.

I've not seen this card (no turds in my opponents' punchbowls). It means that one can't shoot through it at another ship, right, or gives the defender an evade roll?

And speaking of extra cards we know about, how sweet to get VI and Counter Measures!

Tactical Jammer allows the ship it is equipped to to obstruct enemy attacks. So, for example, if you equip it to the Ghost and fly Biggs behind it, and the opponent must shoot at Biggs, if the enemy has line of sight to Biggs through the Ghost, Biggs throws an extra green die.

I originally thought it might be "Black Market Slicer Tools", but I think read somewhere (SW wiki?) that the Black Sun are known for their skilled Slicers..

...so then I thought, OK, more likely "Black Sun Slicer Tools" and still fixated on it being an Illicit...

...this thread has definitely swung me towards "Black Sun Slicer (Tech)".

( the use of "Tech" in Crew names bugs me though, I have to keep reminding myself that Outlaw Tech is not equipment for TFA era ships - would've preferred 'Techie', though perhaps that sounds too cutesy?! )

If the latter-most (and now I hope it is), then given no faction restriction this might be a hacker-for-hire that could be the elusive "U-boat hard counter"...

...if it removes Focus tokens (one of the hardest of counters), or does damage to over-clockers (or any self-stresser), then all factions have access to it as a counter.

I'm fine with it being RNG, given that Epic should keep the more certain damage capability of Slicers (as questionable as they reportedly are for efficiency, opinions vary) - I like the idea of a diluted version of that.

Re: TJ's - has FFG ever put cards in a fan as place-holders, and later "surprised" with a different card in pack?

They've occasionally changed the card numbers (vis. Mist Hunter which had one less tractor beam and one more Adaptability on release than in the original fan) but never the loadout to my knowledge.

With 2 Illicit slots, and no 'scum only' narrative I think it is very likely this will be an illicit choice.

I'm excited for it. I like anything that involves messing with opponent's ships beyond just shooting at them.

I have to agree with this, though I secretly hope it's a 2-point crew upgrade because I think this would be a contender for the crew slot on Whisper.

There is only one man who would dare give me the Raspberry!

Is this the much vaunted "anti Ordnance tech"

That is an obscene amount of Jam.

Is it raspberry?

Mmmm, rapsberry.

Or another R jam, rubarb.

Sorry it's side-ways. Card reads:

Black Market Slicer Tools

Illicit for 1 point

Action : Choose a stressed enemey ship at Range 1-2 and roll 1 attack die. On a [ boom ] or [ kaboom ] result, remove 1 stress token and deal that ship 1 facedown damage card.

Gyroscopic Targeting

Modification, Caster only for 2 points

A the end of the Combat phase, ff you executed a 4- or 5-speed manuever this round, you may rotate your mobile firing arc.
