How long will it take for someone to mod the Fang Fighter?

By sf1raptor, in X-Wing

In Rebels, the Fang's wings spin around the fuselage, so how long do y'all think it'll take for a modded Fang to show up in the painting and modding forum?

Within a day, I'm sure someone will have tried it. Especially considering the number of people who've mentioned it. It's achievable with a scalpel and a magnet, but I'm sure there'll be some impressive mods completed within a week.

I intend to. Looks like a very easy conversion.

Be willing to bet someone will have done it by the end of next week, if any of the good modellers are at GenCon.

Funny enough, somebody asked me about this yesterday after seeing my rotational magnetized B-Wing cockpit post.

Looking at it, I'm guessing you could drill a hole through the wing section, and run a rod/pin through it. Glue the front and back sections on to the ends of the pin in a fixed position and bingo, the wings should rotate around the body. You won't get 360 rotation in practical gameplay because the wings will hit the peg, but you'll get the illusion of full rotation (it's not like you're going to be spinning them around on the tabletop anyway) in any configuration with the exception of a straight up and down orientation. If you glue it tight, friction should do the work for you of holding the wing sections where you want them to as you rotate it.

Otherwise you could use the D11 magnets I used for the B-Wing Cockpit and string three of them together. A little more work since you'd have to align the front and back section every time you moved it. I think the pin option is probably best.

Stole somebody's handy picture and made this awesome MS Paint diagram.

I probably won't do one right away because I don't play Scum and I'm not a huge fan of the Rebels cartoon. But it looks like it could be a fun conversion for those who do. And it's not terribly complicated.

My thought by the by is to mount the mounting magnet either on a B wing peg out the back (or just replace the engine with a ring magnet) or under one of the wings. Then you get maximum rotations.

The engine at the back isn't supposed to rotate, so it's not as easy as just having the back end swivel on a magnet. Unless you're not bothered by the whole piece rotating.

Looking at the photos of how the wings join, I think it will be a tricky conversion to do well.

Full rotation? That may take a little bit if you want the wings to stay parallel. Just modding the wings to a different angle would be easy though.

How about a mini motor to SPIN the wings!?!

Dang I was hoping to finish my maneuver with my rims still spinning...

Good trick right?

I think it should be relatively straight forward. The biggest issue will likely be the placement of the peg and whether it needs to be re-positioned too. Something like the b-wing 'in engine' peg should work and would allow full spin for the wings.

When I saw the model it looked very thin and flat. You might be able to mod it to get it to rotate but I'm not sure that it would look very good.

I will be attempting it probably before i even play with it

Aww, I clicked the thread hoping to see this...

You'd have to mount the cockpit onto the back motor as well, that kind of goes without saying.

I think it's doable but challenging. My real question to myself is whether I'm willing to risk £12 of model to try. I was willing to screw with my StarViper because breaking it wasn't a huge issue, but I actually might PLAY the Fang...

They have to release it first, right?

It's pretty expected that it will see early release at GenCon.

Yeah, I want to see one actually spin on a motor. That will stop people from saying it looks like the Buck Rogers ship.

You could take a B-Wing connector, add it to the rear engine.

Well I got this far. Need to reinforce the center-to-wing attachment (somehow) before proceeding. Or make a thicker version of that part.

Sweet! I was wondering why this post came back up.

I'll post pics later. I finished my mod a week or two after gen con.
