Shien Training vs. Inquisitor's Lightsaber

By SlappyWhite, in Star Wars: The Card Game - Rules Questions

We have this question on facebook and reddit and there is not a whole lot of agreement so far.

Shien Training

Enhance a Force User unit.
Interrupt : When enhanced unit would be dealt damage, focus this enhancement to deal that damage to another target unit instead.

Inquisitor's Lightsaber (attached to the man himself)

Enhance a Force User or Force Sensitive unit.
Enhanced unit gains [unit Damage].
If enhanced unit is The Inquisitor, damage he deals cannot be prevented or reassigned.

Here is the issue we are running into with it. Shien Training does not reassign (protect wording) or prevent (survivors wording, and shield wording) it deals instead, and also triggers at the would be damaged stage rather than the assigning damage stage. We fell like the intent of the Inquisitor's lightsaber was to stop shien, but the wording is not sufficient to function. Currently we are just confused this has come up in many games as both Survivors and Stygion Prime are in high rotation in our meta.

Any official explanation or ruling would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like "reassign" covers redirect and "deal . . . instead". I too am curious about the official ruling.

Does FFG ever officially answer things like these?

Does FFG ever officially answer things like these?

FFG and its employees do not post on any forums. However, there is a rules question submission form which tends to get you official answers relatively quickly. In general, the cardgamedb.com forums are much more active than these forums, including faster rules answers from community members as well as a large thread which is compiled responses from FFG on rules questions.

I will post their response

Noticing that you haven't posted a response yet... Perhaps they're behind because of GenCon last week?

On page 10 of the FAQ, you’ll see the “Damage and Timing Resolution” process. The first step of that process is to “assign damage.”
Shien Training Interrupts the start of this process to choose a new target to assign damage to. This is a reassignment of the damage to whatever that new target is; as such, if that damage if coming from The Inquisitor enhanced with The Inquisitor’s Lightsaber, you won’t be able to use Shien training.
