The Shadow Caster is Full of surprises... Apparently

By Pimpbacca, in X-Wing

The Intent to combine Rigged Cargo and Seismic Torpedoes is kind of unnecessary, considering a Seismic Charge is more reliable, costs less points, fewer upgrade slots, and doesn't require two ships to trigger...

Seismic Charge waits until the end of the Activation phase to explode though. Not saying that this is a killer combo but that's one thing that it has over Seismic Charge.

It matters when you trigger. Seismic goes when you reveal dial, which means opponent always can choose to stay away. Moving one ship up to drop the cargo and then having another one shoot Seismic can all happen before your opponent can move.

Is it the most optimal build? Not at all. Could it turn out crazy amazing if you rolled Crits on Soontir Fel and/or someone else with it? You betcha.

Unfortunately its only 1 die and soontir rolls it himself, you dont roll it then apply the damage. So if he rolls a crit your opponent will just palp it

Again with this vacuum palp crap.

LET HIM PALP IT! that means he already burned palp at the begining of the **** round!

So if we take two of these we can dump 4 pieces of trash on the map. Man that's going to be fun with 10 things on the board. I wonder if that is going to be a strag to combat everything.

Just to be clear, you're talking about taking two Lancers, each with two copies of Rigged Cargo Chute, for four total debris fields added? Because I'm sure at some point somebody's going to try to use Extra Munitions on these, and no.

Is it just me or this is the wave with the least amount of spoiled dials in a long time (one) ?

**** FFG, why u hate Vassal? :(

Yeah and it comes with a singular card/token for some reason. Meaning even if you want 2 of these, thats 2 shadowcasters. I could see people buying 2 of these but no way in hell would there be more. Somehow i doubt the cargo would be that gamebreaking to buy a 40USD expansion for literally a card and token lol

They needed to fit in those two tactical jammers and a copy of counter measures.

I think that that big obstacle and the ship bases eats up most of the real estate on the cardboard that comes with ships.

Latts Razzi with R5-P8 will be awesome. Open dial for aces is no problem. 2 vs 2 dice with R5-P8. End game winner!

Personally, it bugs me when people play the ships on Vassal months before the official release, so I'm glad they've kept back more dials this time.

Granted, the GenCon folks will spoil the dials later this week and the product will still only be available months later for general purchase, so nothing has really changed.

I was just going to post something to this effect. At first I was thinking "YAY something good vs palp aces!" And then I read that it's one die rolled by the defender. So, unless the aces player has two ships located near that particular obstacle, you've done nothing. It is one less obstacle for aces to hide behind, though, which is nice. Anything to take away their green dice or bypass them. I'm thinking it could have been 1 point, but we'll see. Gotta brainstorm some more.

Edit: I forgot that the torpedo is an action, so you still get to attack after! This is actually pretty good!

Still, it's a decent card for swarmy lists or just shenanigans in general. You could fly in formation straight at an obstacle between you and the enemy, blow it up , and just k-turn after.

Yes you have done something. You have forced him to waste his palp on damage that doesnt remove SD before anybody shoots.

There are far more resources you need to keep in mind with this game than raw damage. Burning palpatine, banking TL for future use, disengaging, etc etc are all examples of resources/tactics that are NOT directly related to raw damage that are all very important.

I guarantee if you cause a crit against soontir with seismic torp your opponent is going to be very pissed that he just had to palp it. Now he doesnt have palp for the entire round.

Palp is not a cure-all. Once per round, thats it. Theres a heavy choice on using him because it might bite you in the ass later.

What about B-Wings. Add Advanced Sensors and Seismic Torpedo.

Then blast your way through obstacles and potentially damage your target in the process. Even works on lower Pilot Skill ships but, of course, opens you up to them as well.

i could see bwings with it as a bit of a bluff-battle.

Bwings have very slow movements, you could face the rock like you are going to torp it and your opponent moves second and expects it so he plans for it. Then you just cut 1hard to the side and he lands on a rock, losing his shot :D

Mindgames. I love mindgames.

Keyan Farlander, advanced sensors, seismics, e2mod Chopper, PtL

Trigger advanced sensors fire your torpedo to blow up the obstacle (damage opponent), K-turn, TL, remove 1 stress and finish them off with primaries! Because you can, yea!

probably to get a 1up on those that dont/cant play vassal when the ships release.

Biggest reason Ryad is such a thorn around me is nobody plays Vassal so nobody is used to her yet.

Just curious: why does it bother you ?

You can playtest any ship worth a revealed dial with or without vassal.

Theoretically, yes.

But its much easier to fire up vassal and find somoene willing to GIVE IT A GO, compared to having to print a copy of the dial, stick it in an actual dial, and put an empty base on the board to push around and find an opponent willing...

What are people thinking they can do with Ketsu crew?

I think the biggest surprise was probably the fact that the article ended with a mini ARC-170 preview.

Never had an issue getting an opponent to let me proxy on social night. If you know the dial of the ship, just write your maneuver as text in your phone.

I don't have a Cellphone.

Good question. I'm really in no position to tell people what they should or shouldn't do, but for my part, I only use what I own when I use Vassal. If the product isn't released, then nobody owns it yet, so it seems dishonest to me to use the unreleased content. And then you've got a bunch of players playing with stuff and announcing what is good in the expansion and what isn't good before most players have even had a chance to hold the ship in their hands. That also bothers me. Again, people pronounce judgment freely, before they've even played it anyway, but once people have games to back up their views, it starts the group-think before people even play with the ships.

What are people thinking they can do with Ketsu crew?

I think one overlooked thing is that Crew-Ketsu (Crewtsu?) apparently leaves ALL tractor tokens on her target, not just one. So you can, if needed, stack a few tokens on a ship to drop its AGI to the point it cant defend itself over multiple rounds. Now grated, the title itself can only apply one tractor token at a time and the only pilot that applies tractor tokens is Ketsu herself so you can't double stack in a single turn from one ship. But if you have a couple tractor beams it theoretically could work.
