I done messed up! Help me please

By taulover55, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I thought I'd get my old paints out and paint up one of my a wings to use in HotAC.

Now I used my old citadel paints and forgot how old they where but carried on regardless. The white has gone a bit blotchy and take out some detail!

How can I remove this to start again! I'm gonna base coat and small layers repainting with actual fresh nice paint!

There are several ways to strip paint, but personally I prefer denatured alcohol/spirits. Of course brand names and availability differ quite a lot between countries so I couldn't tell you which one to use.

First thing to try is.......Window cleaner !

The acid additive in the cleaner, similar PH to vinegar is very good at softening and removing acrylic base paints.

I use it all the time to clean my brushes and airbrush.

and have removed paint from models with this method before.

Next is ....full sugar Coke.

again Hi Acid content but wont eat the plastic........leave the model to soak in both for about 24 hrs.......soften the paint.

then use an old tooth brush to remove the lose paint.

a more abrasive method......but can attack some plastics depending how soft they are.

is Automotive brake cleaner.

I have used this many times, on many models....but not on X wing models.

good luck on removing the paint,

all the best,

Barry.

Cheers Barry, i'll give it a go tonight.

The OLD gw plastics used to be OK in Nitromors whilst the paint got disintegrated but I'm not sure if these would hold up to that harsh a treatment so window cleaner it is.

Dettol is the usual suggested stripper in the UK - but it doesn't work well on x wing minis as I found to my cost.

For Citadel paints, I use good ole' Simple Green, available from any hardware store or supermarket. Simply soak overnight and the paint falls right off. Scrub the next day with an old toothbrush and you're golden.

+1 for Simple Green

+2 for Simple Green!

Simple green isn't cheap enough to get hold of this side of the pond. Might be cheaper to just buy another a wing (ship and dial) lol.

What's the UK equivalent of simple green?

Same here.

Simple Green or "the green sea" is the usual citadel stripper. Dont dilute it, just dump the whole bottle into a container you can get the models/your hand in and out of easily and submerge them for a day or so. USUALLY thats all you need though i tend to leave them there for a week for the hell of it lol.

Use a toothbrush on them before you rinse them off, being careful of poky-bits. Which i dont think the Awing has any though.

Ethanole works as well, without attacking the plastic.

If the paint is more resistant: Acetone free(!) nail polish remover when working fast, soak for a short time, rinse with disk water, tooth brush. Be careful, soaking too long affects slightly the surface of the model.

Some of Automotive brake fluids or brake fluid removers were cancerogenic in the past, you might want to check out first what's in it.

It's Dettol, but the 'active' ingredient is pine oil, and I don't think Dettol contains quite as much. Tends to do the trick but just takes a while to soak, then a gentle scrub, then soak again, repeat as necessary!

I used Glass Cleaner (wilkos finest at 74p) and it took off the citadel paint but not all the ink wash :( i did only leave it in for about 14 hours though then cleaned off and dug out the indents carefully.

i might stock up on Simple Green as i have some sedition wars minis that need a repaint and were coated in games workshops finest vintage recently (circa 2001-2005) paints (remember the screw cap solid plastic tubs!!) and im tempted to try army painter or vallejo paints next though

Fairy power spray.

If you can't get Simple Green, you can use any natural-based household cleaner and soak the model overnight. Worked for me.

In the US, LA's Totally Awesome (Yellow Liquid, clear bottle, red writing -- found at Dollar Tree and Dollar General) is even better than Simple Green!

You beat me to it. ++1 Eats acrylic paint right off and doesn't attack the plastic in the least. I left a Star Viper in a vat of Totally Awesome over an entire weekend (went to in-laws and forgot it), and it came out the other end fine (and clean)
