Thanks

By greybort, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Just got my copy of 3rd edition last night. Went through the books, and I have to say, I'm a little disappointed. I followed all the hype (and anti-hype) in the forums before the release and wanted to make my own opinion of the game since there seemed to be a lot of heresay and guesses on what the game would be like. I have almost all the 1st and 2nd edition books, so I guess I'm a trog, or whatever I'm supposed to be called. If FFG could explain how 2nd ed. characters could be converted to 3rd ed. and vice versa, I think I would be more interested. I think I will try to sell/trade my copy since it feels similar to Warhammer Quest, which I already own. All this being said though, I want to go on record that I think FFG does great stuff. I got hooked with Dragonstar, and now own just about every rpg FFG has made. I don't own any board games, yet, but am planning on buying Horus Heresy when it gets released (and I still own the old version). I hope this post does not start any bashing, I really do like the company, and most of the products it makes, just not this one.

PS If you ever plan on re-releasing Dragonstar, you'll have a very excited customer!

"think I will try to sell/trade my copy since it feels similar to Warhammer Quest, "

It's a shame you don't like it. And I agree, nobody should bash you for your opinion.

I wouldn't mind if you elaborated on this statement.

To me, this game is absolutely nothing like Warhammer Quest. And I mean: nothing at all. This is an RPG, full of social opportunties (some of which are encouraged by action cards, but they hardly encompass everything). Also WHQ is a game which used a map and squares (as I recall), which this game does not do.

So where does it feel similar?

To be fair, I think this is part of the reason that FFG aren't using the V3 moniker with the game at all, as far as I can see. It is a completely new game and not a revised and updated version of V2.

It's a bit like asking for a way of converting characters from FFG's WFRP to Savage worlds or any other system you care to mention. Although based in the same world, other than that the two systems have very little in common.

Having said that though, with a V2 character you would know overall how much xp or to what level of play that character has progressed. So you "could" create that character using the V3 (couldn't get any further without referring to it as V3, but I did try!) creation rules, then progress that character through a number of advances and career transitions staying true to the original V2 advances purchased as much as possible. It won't be quick or get you a character that is going to be directly comparable (the lack of all the V2 careers is likely to a manin factor in this, although conversely V3 gives options that just are not there in V2), but it could get you close. In reality though you'll end up with the essence of that V2 character using the V3 rules, rather than a direct conversion, but that is no bad thing, IMO. The action card buys and options are likely to make the V3 character far more or a "character" and personalise them than pushing them through several V2 careers, where one V2 career X->Y->Z is very similar in terms of skills and abilities to another character of career X->Y->Z.

It's a shame you don't think you'll like it, but I agree with the previous post, it is not similar to warhammer quest once you get into it and start playing it, perhaps you should give it a go and then decide?

Thanks for the replies and the suggestions. I guess my comparison the Warhammer Quest was in terms of the tokens, cards and dice. Don't get me wrong, I love Warhammer Quest. Heck I played it on the night before my wedding with my two best men! I just feel that WFRP has become more about the tabletop, and character management than with the system I am used to, and enjoy. I hope the game is a success, if only so that FFG can continue to produce quality games, but it's just not for me.

I'd suggest trying it before you trade it. I wasn't a big fan of what I saw the first time I cracked the box and started going through things....then I played it. It's really very liberating. The dice pool system is great for enhancing story based result. Having all the rules available to the players at a glance is extremely beneficial and liberating.

Tried it, still didn't like it, so my local store traded it for three hard to find books for another fantasy roleplay game that I had been looking for. The game isn't for everyone, but my store did say that at least half the people who played WFRP liked the new edition. 50% + 1 still makes it a winner!

Well, Im going to chime in. Im fairly new to these boards, so bear with me.

As the subject for this thread is titled "Thanks" I want to personally thank FFG for bringing me back to WFRP after a 15 year absence. I have not been so excited for a fantasy rpg since WFRP 1st edition came out. In my absence I have been an avid gamer of White Wolf, and while I intend to continue gaming using one of my all time favorite systems (Storytelling), I have purchased this mamoth box set and cannot wait to start a warhammer game with my group.

So, thanks FFG, for brining me back to the world of grim and perilous adventure.
