TLT: Y-wing vs HWK (scum)

By IG88E, in X-Wing

In a time where scum has a lot of good crew options (Bossk, Zuckuss, 4-LOM, Dengar, ...) I would like to rethink the options for TLT carriers

What are the statistics for Y-wing and HWK (with and without focus).

Preferences? Arguments?

Beside stats (and pilots):

Y-wing:

+ Better dial (worth it with and without unhinged mech?)

+ Hull and shield value

+ astromech option

HWK:

+ one more agility

+ cheaper (2 points interesting for vectored thrusters?)

+ crew option

If you want a cheap generic TLT carrier, go with the y-wing. It can move surprisingly fast with unhinged, which makes it easier to keep ships out of range 1. A recspec generic HWK with TLT will indeed do more consistent damage, but has difficulty avoiding other ships or preserving its range 1 bubble.

My favorite scum TLT build so far is Palob with TLT, Zuckuss, and Wired. You really don't care about stress, as Palob can still get his focus or evade tokens elsewhere along with Wired re-rolls. It punches damage through consistently on high-agility ships, especially if you are able to steal their token first.

Kavil with TLT and predator is also a fun option.

Well, there is the 4 hawk with TLT and recon spec option.

Not sure how it compares though.

A spice runner with TLT and Dengar is a very potent TLT if you're looking for a way to spend 25 points as a splash. Usually the Y-wing is better though.

Clever use of HWK named pilots can be great but if you just want a cheap generic y-wing all day long.

Wasn't there an all HWK list that won a major tournament a few months back?

It came close, but it didn't manage to win. I think it was Palob+3 generics with crew options.

The hwk has more options to be better offensively but the y will last longer, and with fixed max output that matters more.

At the UK Games Expo a lad went 6-0 on day 1 with 4 HWK TLTs, creamed in on day 2 but it was interesting to see

I think it comes down to the question of do you want to be tricky or tanky. Named pilots for the HWK can throw people for a loop and have the crew slot to add in more nasty tricks. The Y-Wing doesn't have as many tricks, but it's a solid ship with some solid Unique pilots.

I'll admit, I'll generally take a HWK over a Y-Wing most of the time, but I'm a HWK fan. Both have merit. It just depends on what you're trying to do.
