Star Wars Destiny effect on X-wing?

By Animewarsdude, in X-Wing

With FFG's latest Star Wars product we see that they are showcasing both the Prequel alongside the Sequel trilogy, while we have had little things here and there like getting the Arc-170 in Wave 9 and some stuff in the RPG stuff, which is really a first for their products. So maybe this might indicate that they might embrace more of the prequel era in their products, maybe with the introduction of Republic and Separatist factions for X-wing or probably a little more likely more prequel ships being added to existing factions. For Armada it might allow for a wave or two of Clone Wars holdovers, and for Imperial Assault it probably means little since it has plenty of content and they'd be just as well off just making a spin off Clone Wars version of the game instead.

Regardless what is everyone's opinion on this matter and what it might mean?

Nah, X-wing is still best without the prequel era included. ARC is in, ya, but they made it very clear that they were ARCs that survived until the rebellion era and were a rare site with no generics. If they had plans to go all in on prequel stuff, they wouldn't have bothered.

Before Asmodee bought FFG, the devs did state that they were only pulling from Galactic Civil War onward. Now...?

They did not say that. What they did state was that their time period is strictly GCW and onward. With how we receive the ARC that statement is still true and there is no indication that they will go for actual prequel factions any time soon if ever.

Well in one of the podcasts they did with the developers earlier this year they said that given time they might use prequel stuff or make prequel factions, basically if they need content or think there is a market for it we will see more prequel era stuff.

Unless it's a stand alone game, I predict that FFG won't go full "menace" on X-wing. A Clone Wars tactical ground game would be pretty cool but I think there is too much resistance in the player opinion realm.

I would predict that X-wing will get "older" ships from the Prequel Trilogy and Clone Wars ONLY if these ships are re-introduced in the new canon through comics, novels, games, TV shows and movies. So we should be getting an N-1 Fighter and maybe a Nu-class Attack shutttle from the olden days- but I don't expect more than just a few more. (I'll take a Droid fighter or two)

I WELCOME the prequels. Bring it on!!!! I will not go to the Dark Side hating on the Prequels. We DID have Ewoks in Return of the Jedi....(I think I just threw up in my mouth thinking about them)...so I could hate that movie too but YET I focus on the good such as the B-Wing goodness.

As my son watched the prequels over and over and over and over and over and over and over again there are some really good parts in the Prequels. One of them being ships.

So bring it on!!!!

A ground based Clone Wars game would be awesome, heck a large scale ground based Star Wars game would be awesome. But those ships are canon, they were in the films and in Clone Wars, unless you mean that the Rebellion or Empire used those ships. In which case the Empire used Arc-170s and V-wings and Darth Vader flew a black Eta-2 Interceptor before he got his Tie Advanced. As for the Rebels they had Droid starfighters at some point in the new canon and Leia flew a N1 Starfighter so maybe we can get her as a pilot in the game.

Yes, that's what I mean... the old ships appearing in NEW canon. That's why I pointed out the N-1. The Nu-class was in SW:Rebels season 2, btw. I just don't think the old factions will work cohesively to be uncomplicated and true to the story lines.

All that said- I'll take ANY ships from ANY era... I just don't want to have much more in the way of new factions in X-wing. All other FFG Star Wars games can go for it.

I'm fine with content from the prequels, but we can't use the same pilots from the films. Because, it's been like... Y'know. Two decades since the Clone Wars.

True but we still have Biggs and quite a few other people who died flying with the likes of Poe, and the sequel trilogy takes place 30 years after the original ones so...

It basically comes down to whether they wish to have it where the existing factions gain prequel ships as old or salvaged equipment or if they want to make new factions for the Republic and Separatists.

That's a bad argument. Continuity in this game isn't a thing. It's around 30 years between ROTJ and TFA. We've already got a number of scum pilots that showed up in the Clone Wars cartoon.

I loved the Clone Wars TV show. I think it would be great to play some clone-wars-era ships. I didn't like most of the prequels but the ships and such were cool, and that's all that matters to me when playing this game.

I'm happy for prequel content in whatever form we get it. Very excited for the ARC-170 as that's one of my favourite ship designs

I think the main stumbling block for implementing prequel ships is the question of how? Do we just add new factions for Republic and Separatist or do we go with the retrofitted technology idea? Once that's figured out, the other issue may be finding ways to differentiate unique droid starfighter pilots - it's not exactly like they have names like the clones did.

You guys are worried about prequel characters added to your game. You have it easy. At least you don't have to worry about the future of lcgs.

I get the prequel hate from a writing/directing view, but denying that the prequels' art direction wasn't perfectly Star Wars feels like folly.

There's no acting in X-Wing, and what flavor text there is just waxes technical.

I'm not the biggest fan of the way they introduced the ARC, but I'm happy to have the model. Wouldn't mind seeing the N-1, but I think that beyond that prequel ships belong in a parallel game, not interacting with GCW ships.

The ARC article talks about how it's obsolete etc, and the stats reflect that relative to GCW ships, but it wasn't obsolete at all compared to other prequel ships. X-Wing's stats really aren't granular enough to do generations well.

I mean, that really depends. A lot of it was retro 50s kitsch. They even had a retro 50s diner on Coruscant because of course they did. And so things like the N-1 and to a lesser degree the Delta-6 look like classic cars that one day grew wings and started flying.

But the ARC, sure, that looks like it's from the same universe as the X-Wing and TIE.

The N-1's definitely its own look, but compare with the Royal Guards in RotJ - it's the same sort of ceremonial thing.

Pretty much every other fighter (minus Grievous' fighter and the Geonosian starfighter) we see in the prequels can be traced foward to an aesthetic inheritor in the OT. Not necessarily directly via manufacturer, though.

The general Vulture form is pretty much 'organic TIE-fighter', and we see Defender fore-designs in the Tri-fighter. Heck, parts of Raith Sienar's background involved him studying under the Xi Char and other Separatist manufacturers before pulling grand theft IP.

From the other side, Delta-7>Eta-2/V-Wing>TIE Fighter is fairly obvious.

I think you've got an audience gap to consider. X-Wing is expensive to get into. You have a game that's $40 with a minimum of $15 per expansion (not including the dice pack). Some expansions even cost more than the core! That's a hard sell to some people, especially teenagers and children who don't have their own income, or young adults who have a very limited income. The collectible model lets an interested player get into the game for $15 with a starter set and increase their collection at their own pace. It's easier to swallow spending $3 at a time than $15 or so. So I think we're likely to see this game targeted toward a younger audience than X-Wing is. Given that fact, it makes perfect sense to include the prequels which will be familiar to many of the younger children without the stigma that the older generations bear toward it.

In summary, I think X-Wing will avoid the prequels as long as they can because of who the game is targeted toward, while it would be foolish to NOT include the prequels for Destiny.

You guys do know that the ARC was included because of its cameo on Rebels, right? For all we know there might be a complicated series of rights that prevent a general Prequel release for Xwing.

For all we know Disney want to disown the prequels but some clause in the purchase agreement prevents it.

Chaos gods know he was hell bent on forcing the prequels on us it wouldn't surprise me, old Lucas is pure evil.

X-Wing... Expensive......

X-Wing is one of the most affordable miniatures games on the market with one of the lowest buy in prices.

Being "relatively inexpensive" and being inexpensive are not always the same thing.

Being "relatively inexpensive" and being inexpensive are not always the same thing.

The buy-in to x-wing is less than 2 video games, 2 tanks of gas (or 1 on some cars), 1 large (or 2 small) nerf guns, a family meal at a sit down restaurant. X-Wing isn't "relatively inexpensive" It is downright cheap. Just because I said it is "one of the most affordable miniatures games on the market" doesn't mean I'm just comparing it to miniatures games.

That being said. I don't think the Star Wars Dice Card Game is going to affect the game at all. Games like that require just as much, if not more, monetary investment than a game like X-Wing due to the collectible nature of the game and the, usually, expensive and somewhat volatile secondary market.
