Hopeing for a new Vader.

By Dwing, in X-Wing

I'm for Vader, as a pilot card, being able to "jump" ship per say to something other than a TIE Advanced, maybe to the TIE Punisher, TIE Defender and so on and not just as a crew card. Thoughts?

Vader as a modification card perhaps...a little silly no doubt, but he is more machine than man.

His effect being to confer his two action economy on a ship.

Naturally, I can imagine all sorts of horror this might evoke.

GOD no.

This way brokenness lies, the key problem with STAW was that the pilot abilities were divorced from the ships.

Yeah, I'm glad there's no one overused upgrade card in this game that gives extra actions. Can you imagine the problems if multiple high PS pilots could take an upgrade like that? At least stress mechanics could counter it, but who wants a meta where there's only two or three choices in lists?

(Psst, that's sarcasm)

I've been using Vader faithfully and just recently I won two games out of three in a mini store tournament this past weekend using the following: Vader, Countess, and two TIE fighters: howlrunner and obsidien with no extras. I've also paired Vader with Soontir Fel makes for a wicked combination. Moving Vader to say the Phantom would be interesting too.

Will you be demanding a FAQ that Resistance Han can't be flown with Rebel Han then? Aaaanyways, Vader is worthy of a first!

The rules already specify you can't use two unique cards with the same name in the same squad.

Maybe Poe was redone but was he really? He's got the exact same ability in the exact same ship it's just that now he gains +1 PS for +2 points. By that measure you really want to see a PS 10 Vader come in at 31 points?

Besides, who says Vader is the "best" pilot in the galaxy? IMPERIAL PROPAGANDA I say! He may be good but there are others that are just as good especially when you start looking at things in certain ways.

Poe should still be PS 8, he simply ain't PS 9 BASED on the movie, because Wedge, Han, Dengar, Vader and especially Fel are all supposed to be better than what Poe shows in the movie.

And speaking of Fel, he is the best pilot in the galaxy. Anakin Skywalker might have been the top ace in the clone wars … or not as Fen Rau might be a challenger on that, but Fel and Wedge are supposed to better. Wedge maybe not at the battle of Yavin, but for sure after Endor.

Hmmm. Updated Wedge and Fel with PS10? ^-^

Then we've got flying through a crack in the wall barely wider than his X-wing at high speed later on.

Whereas "based on the films":

  • Dengar stands on a bridge.
  • Vader shoots down some fighters that are physically blocked in front of him by a trench then gets hit by his own wingman.
  • Wedge follows Luke around then follows Lando around in a ship much smaller than Lando's (and Lando is PS7 and pulls it off)

Han's the only one with a PS9 feat to his name (Empire's asteroid chase which beats Rey and Lando's because the obstacles stay put for them).

Fel and Talonbane Cobra aren't even in films and Quickdraw is simply made up.

If we expand to include the EU:

Fel is taken down by a Y-wing.

Talonbane Cobra is killed by the equivalent of a Cartel Spacer. He's the boss of a tutorial level.

Dengar never does anything of particular note with regards to flying except crash a swoop bike.

Quickdraw was simply made up by FFG.

Wedge and Rau are good but there's nothing to suggest they're better than Poe. Vader's antics in Rebels are about on par with Poe's in TFA.

Poe has definitely earned his place amongst the nine PS9 pilots in a game with almost 200.
