What's your most heart-breaking loss?

By Jeff Wilder, in X-Wing

Aside from this one --

-- mine actually was somebody else's game. I was 4-2, top MOV, at Fresno Regionals. If another Bay Area local in the final round of Swiss wins his game, I make the cut and get 2016 dice.

Final roll of the game, target has to roll perfect double-Evade or I get dice ... and he does. (Just to be clear, I didn't know this until after the fact. So it was a retroactive heart-rend.)

Omega Leader staring down the gun barrels of a VI Stele/xD with tractor beams.

He's TL'd so he cant mod, but lands 2 hits with tractor. I only evaded 1 since he tagged my SD earlier, but i elected to NOT use my evade token to cancel the effect because 1) there was no way i'd lose arc and 2) the rock behind me i eyeballed PERFECTLY that i would not be able to hit. I was like 1mm away from it lol. He fires his normal gun...natural 3hit 1 crit. I rolled like ass, burned my evade to stay alive, he stele'd my crit into double damage and i lost anyway.

OOOOO that was upsetting lol. He was at 1hp too!!! Incidentally the losing the SD earlier was from tractorbeams a couple rounds ago so i had no damage on me.

There was tourney about 3 weeks ago. I played Wes, Corran and Biggs list against Oicunn and Whisper. I had great opening, read my opponent really well and in opening salvo I shoot down Whisper not loosing even one point of damage. So it was three full health rebel ships against lone Oicunn. And yet I still lost - and you know why? Because later in the game Oicunn took down my full health Corran in one salvo - 4 hits, I rolled zero evades, one hit goes into hull, of course it is direct hit.

Even my opponent admitted how unfortunate I was.

I had Oicunn and Chiraneau (yes double decimator) chasing a badly wounded Dash and a Corran. I forgot that Oicunn was stressed (it was blocked from my view by the large model...no lie) and I had got the crit saying that all hard turns are red and chose a hard turn the next turn (which I wouldn't be allowed since I'm stressed). My opponent is such a nice guy, and debated flying me off the board. I insisted as it would not be fair if he didn't. Had I not made that mistake forgetting that I was stressed, I would have won for sure. Chiraneau took out Corran on his own and had Dash down to 1 hull before succumbing to his defenseless injuries.

My top 8 match at Quebec City Regionals this year...

I was playing Palp + Inq + Fel vs a Crack-Swarm. I lost the Inquisitor early, managed to kill off Howlrunner quickly enough and Soontir decimated the TIE swarm while the Palp-shuttle melted away.

Very last round of the game. I have Soontir left on 1 hull. My opponent has a Black Squadron without Crackshot and Mauler Mithel with Crackshot. He's been chasing me for a few turns now and I'm heading out of a corner.

I dial in a 2-hard to try and cut across his arc and not get shot at all. But I misjudge my boost+barrel roll and end up at range 1 of Mauler Mithel with nothing but a focus token. He rolls 2 hits. I roll 2 evades. Crackshot. Dead Soontir.

There are so many things I could've done to save myself...

  • Go for a 4-straight and just get to range 3
  • Take the time to realize that after my boost a barrel roll won't take me out of arc and either barrel roll to range 2, or token up

I'm still kind of pissed at myself for screwing up so badly at such a bad time :(

I lost both my parents at Thanksgiving in 2007, which sort of makes that holiday hard each year.

It really WAS an exciting game of poker, however.

Wait, wait, I think I missed the point of this thread.

Well that got dark real fast.

Well that got dark real fast.

That's the last thing I heard my dad say when they closed the trunk lid :(

Accidentally flew Tomax Bren off the board by ONLY THE NUBS in a K-turn. Figured I had no hope after that. Managed to come back, then blew it because I missed an opportunity to barrel roll and get a shot on my opponent's last ship w/ 1 hull. His turret rolled all hits and finished me off.

Trying to kill a 1-hull, no-evade Ghost with a target-locked range 2 turret shot from a stressed U-boat instead of throwing my last plasma torpedo at it. I thought to save the torp for Miranda on the other side of the board.

Either attack gives me a total of 4 dice to roll a natural hit or crit. I rolled blanks, rerolled into blanks, and then ate a Proton in return. I never did that last damage and lost to Miranda/Sabine/ConnerNet shenanigans. I probably lose that game anyway, but I ended up 21 points of MoV out of the Regional cut. Had I done that one point of damage, I would have scored 25 more MoV even if the rest of the game was unchanged.

It was only on post-game debrief with my opponent that we both remembered that my Guidance Chips would have flipped one of those 4 dice to hit, guaranteed a dead Ghost, and delivered a set of Regional top-8 dice.

oh well...

I had just got back into the game with the announcement of the Scum & Villainy faction. It had just released and we had a store championship that weekend. I flow dual IG-88 and was doing pretty well. Then I faced BBBBZ. I had never faced it before and wasn't sure how to approach. The thing is, I could have done an Advanced Sensors boost that would have got me excellent positioning, but I forgot that I could look at my dial before doing the action, and since I couldn't remember what I had put in for that dial (because I was caught between 2 options), I didn't boost. I'm sure the game could have gone very differently. Instead, I got slaughtered. I still kick myself for not checking my dials again before activating.

should have just hit the winner with your car in the parking lot.

My worst was flying a triple defenders list against a friends BobaRoo list. Blanked almost all of my evade rolls. And the game was over by the 3rd turn of shooting.

But it did let us get in a third game that evening because the game was so quick.

Flying dengaroo at Monroeville regionals, I faced palp aces (Soontir-Inq) round 2 and the endgame was full health (minus one shield) Dengar against a one hull-Soontir (stealth device gone). I chased him for about 30 minutes like this, and to keep him in arc every move, I went over debris twice in two turns and rolled back-to-back crits. I now have 1 shield left. Last round, tokened-up Soontir against Dengar in-arc at R2. I pop countermeasures beginning of round. My attack, even with Zuckuss does nothing, he attacks: hit, hit, blank; I roll blank, blank, blank, lone wolf to another blank. I'm losing at this point now. R5P8; focus. Return fire does nothing and I lose the game on points :(

Worlds 2013. Made it to the top 8. Went up against 3 rookies and a regenerating Luke. I was running Rebel Swarm. 2 golds, 2 rookies and a B-wing. I outgunned him entirely. I was tired and fell into the dumb trap of trying to drop Luke. I laid everything into him and just couldn’t put damage into him. Leaving two of his Rookies alive long enough to widdle me down. It was a dumb mistake on my part and he played it well. Still tears me up inside to this day.

Off: You guys drew 5 Direct Hits out of 14 cards. That proves my conjecture that Direct Hit comes out far more often than statistically supposed to.

I lose so often they all just sorta blur together.

In a really big regional tournament I took one of the most commanding leads I'd ever had in a competitive game. I crushed a 28pt ship in round one without taking any return fire, lit up an enemy large base ship in round 2, and finished off that same ship in round 3, having only lost about 10% of my total squad HP and with all ships still standing.

As the match proceeded I made a debatable judgement call, one big outright mistake, rolled horrifically (over and over and over), and then lost what was essentially a coin flip on the last turn to lose the game by the slimmest of margins, with my opponent's final ship clinging to life by a thread.

Five minutes into that game and I couldn't have been more pleased with myself. Seventy minutes later I was left with my jaw hanging open, trying to figure out how I'd gotten to this point. It still haunts me.

Probably flying IG88-C off the board by a millimeter, turning what was likely a win against 4 Y-Wings into a defeat, costing me a spot in the top 4 by a few MoV. The eventual winner was running an XYY list that my BroBots would've absolutely eaten alive. :(

Top 8 of regionals this year, had a TL on Omega Leader with Wedge. Used BB-8 to barrel roll behind him trying to get into range one but avoiding a rock. I moved, picked up a focus and when it was time to shoot I was just barely out of Range one. He didn't need to use Palp to save OL which means Wampa was able to put a killing blow onto Jake. Even worse is that I can relive the moment since it is on YouTube. Ugh.

Well, I lost a place among the last 16 and thus the 2015 Regionals shield tokens in a (last) game vs. a rebel squad (2x Y-WIng plus 2x z-95).

Just because I was not able to finish off a friggin' Headhunter that was down to one hull and pursued by my HLC-carrying Defender over the cause of the last 5 rounds!

Whatever I did was either swallowed by bumping or my cold attack dice and his glistening hot defense dice. Tickin' me off royally.

This last game spoke epic tales about the inferiority of Defenders at that time.

Every time I play Whisper and Echo! Haha!

Store Champs this year, made top 4 and was flying my VI EU PALP RAC with full hull against IG88-B with full hull.

Was doing at least one damage every turn without being shot till he had 2 hull left and got me in arc.

Gets 2 hits and a crit, crit is Damaged Cockpit.

I ended up dead two turns later, was so close to my first final table too!

You are sick. Who would do that kind of a thing?
