Where's our cooperative game?

By Budgernaut, in Star Wars: Destiny

Yes, I'm going to post this topic on every new Star Wars game that is announced until FFG releases a cooperative Star Wars game. Is it annoying yet, FFG?

The original LCG idea looked fantastic. Sure, it had some issues, but it looks like it could be adapted to a non-LCG model and still be really fun! If that game was really so bad, though, why hasn't a new cooperative game been released? Come on, FFG! We want to work together against the darkness as a group of heroes. We want to end the night having all won or lost together. Why is a co-op game taking so long?!

Seconded!

Thirded!

I've already chimed in elsewhere, so I won't belabor the point, but: FOURTHED!

The weird thing about really wanting a cooperative game and not getting is that its not like co-ops are unpopular and we are asking for something that's just "pie in the sky" dreaming to cater to a small vocal minority. Co-op games are very popular and highly ranked on BGG. And a co-op is very much in the "spirit" of Star Wars. Yes, I know many love to play the Imperials--I do too sometimes, especially in IA. But it seems inarguable that all the players working together against the dark side of the force/evil empire "fits" the theme. I honestly don't understand why we don't have one yet. It certainly seems (from my not in the industry view) that a co-op of any sort would be more profitable than splitting your base with another competitive two player dice/card game.

Personally I hate co-op games but IA scratches that enough for me.

I'm glad your needs are being met by other games, but I always have to play the Imperials since I'm the only one who knows the game well enough, and since I know the game better than the people I play with, I either crush them, or I have to hold back. Neither is fun. If we could all work together, that would be ideal. As it is, I'm still working alone when I play Imperial Assault.

We need a co-op app for IA like the one for Decent.

That would be cool yes.

Okay and? Despite trying the current Star Wars LCG, I ended up not being a big fan. But, even though it was not my cup of tea, I recognize the audience is there and concede that its just not the game for me. I am glad that others are enjoying having that itch scratched.

IA is great. I play it, a lot. Its not a pure co-op. Despite you hating pure co-ops, I hope you can acknowledge that they are somewhat popular and it is a touch surprising that FFG has done nothing in that realm with the Star Wars license.

Of course I can. Frankly I fully expect IA to get an app and am looking forward to it.

That would totally satisfy me (not that that is FFG's job). I'm just not as optimistic as others seem to be that they will be able to work out the licensing for an IA "Road to Legend" app, so that may be jading my responses. I've been wrong many, many times before though (about games and all kinds of other stuff).

Out of curiosity, why do you say you hate pure co-ops but would be interested in a "Road to Legend" app for IA? (Not trolling, sincere question).

So... Imperial assault?

I hope we get one.

I'm hoping he lack of IA previews and announcements means they are being saved for Gencon. Hopefully announcing an app and brand new campaign associated with it :)

I'm going to assume you're not trolling and just say that IA is not a co-op. Its "many against one." Those of us clamoring for a pure co-op want a game where ALL the players win or lose together (a la Pandemic, TIME Stories, Eldritch Horror, The Lord of the Rings LCG, etc.).

I love IA as is. Its one of my favorite games. Its not a co-op.

Because then at least there is still an opponent of a sort. It is not fully co-operative. I'm fine with co-op competitive and the app would be better that something like LotR LCG where it's all you automating things yourself. Yawn.

I disagree that (good) co-ops are yawn inducing affairs where you are simply automating things yourself. Any given LoTR LCG scenario, just as an example, involves numerous complex decisions about how to respond to a randomized encounter deck with limited resources. "Automating things myself" is the last way I would describe a challenging co-op. But fair enough if you don't like them. Tastes are subjective.

Honestly, though, the Road to Legend app is much less an "opponent" and much more a "bookkeeping assistant" that helps you automate the things that make you yawn in other co-op games. The same "script" that you dislike in other co-ops is still there, its just that the app is doing some of the homework for you.

Agree to disagree and get back to the actual game of this forum. :)

Whatever number we're up to now (seventh I think?).

As big a fan as I am of oldschool Star Wars I only buy the games where I can play the Empire or Darkside. I have 0 interest in the Rebs or Republicans.
This is the case for many.
Hence the LCG was also massively changed. There was a lot of backlash as people wanted to play both sides.
FFG probs won't go for a onesided affaire again.

As for coops. I adore them. I prefer them usually over the PVP approach. But to each his own i guess.

Exactly. And people like you have ... how many FFG Star Wars games? Is it 6 now? There is not an insignificant number of people that would be interested in playing as the good guys as they team up with their friends and families. Just look at how the Heroes of the Aturi Cluster fan-made project has been received for X-Wing. People will play a co-op game, even if they can't play Dark Side. And if it sells well enough, I have no doubts a Dark Side version would be created.

So I'm just going to hop on here and add another "PLEASE!" I've wanted a proper co-op LCG in Star Wars ever since I saw the amazing quality that's achieved in say LOTR or WHQ.

Eighthed? Is that even a thing?
