How is this Tie Fighter at Range 2??

By ElCapitanP, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The below image is taken from the FAQ, and either I am missing something or the description is straight up wrong. It seems to me that the red portion of the firing arc is meant to encapsulate range 2, but in the description it says that the tie is AT range 2.

Looks like a pdf bug. The red portion isn't supposed to be flat at the top.

Isn't it? Range 2 from a square base would be flat right there.

It's a PDF bug. The red section should be larger.

Yes, range 2 from a square base will have a flat part. However, the flat part will only be as wide as the small base, not as wide as it is in your pic.

Range 2, or any range would have to form an arc in that diagram, not a flat line across like that.

Besides if you were to actually measure to that tie fighter, the ruler would be on the tie's base not off to the side like that.

Here's what it really looks like:

Edit: meta - can anyone give me a pointer on posting images? I get an error when I try to use the control

Yup, that's a PDF rendering bug right there...

It will have a flat spot in the middle, the width of the small ship base. It's nowhere near as big as in the top image, but it is there.

Even that image is terrible, although it is what's in my PDF too. It's not even symmetrical!

(To link an image, make sure you have the URL of the picture itself, not the imgur page.)

For an image of what a small ship arc really looks like, ask the developers of the Vassal plugin . They take this kind of thing very seriously.

Yup, Mu0n has got his **** together!

Don't know what's going on with that embedded image - if you go to the imgur page it looks fine.

Not when you're measuring from a square instead of a point or circle.

You don't measure from a square, you measure from a point. Closest point to closest point. The picture in post #7 shows it should look.

You're wrong.

Yes, when measuring from a ship to another ship, you are measuring from one point to another.

However, when drawing range bands, you are measuring from a square base.

You're wrong.

Not really, unless people are picking nits about what is or isn't an arc.

Sure it's not a perfect arc, but it is also not flat like shown in the OP. It's a arc with a flat section matching the base as is shown in the screenshot from Vasal.

So... you're saying the exact same thing as arnoldrew. Paraphrasing the conversation so far...

VanorDM: It should be an arc, no flat section.

arnoldrew: You're measuring from a square, there'll be a flat section.

VanorDM: You don't measure from a square.

Klutz: When drawing range bands, you are measuring from a square - there'll be a flat part.

VanorDM: It's an arc with a flat section.

You seem to have changed your mind :P

You seem to have changed your mind :P

No I haven't. I may not have been clear, but I'm saying the same thing I've been saying since the start.

The image in the OP is wrong, there shouldn't be this large flat section like it shows, it should be more of an arc. However yes there will be a section that is flat.

The "arc" would have a flat spot in it but it certainly wouldn't be nearly as big as shown in the OP's image.

It almost looks like the "flat" from a large base projected onto the actual arc from a small base.

Question: How is the Tie Fighter at range 1.

Answer: Exactly the same as it is at range 1.

Only worse.

And with 1 less attack die.

And with no auto thrusters benefit.

And Talonbane Cobra is still useless.

And, I have on clean underpants.

And, the Underpants Gnomes keep stealing them.

And......

Wait, what was the question?

to the OP's original question, I thought exactly the same thing looking at the picture in the FAQ. The tie fighter is clearly outside of the red range band (which I agree should be a lot more arc like than it is) the picture seems to exactly contradict the text in the example. Personally, I didn't really think it needed explaining, but with the horrible example they gave, people are going to be all jacked up about it now.

It's most definitely a pdf glitch. My version is fine, so I would suggest deleting the copy you have if it looks like that, and downloading it again to see if that sorts the issue out.

I think it's more about the software rendering the PDF than the PDF file being corrupted.

... but with the horrible example they gave, people are going to be all jacked up about it now.

FFG didn't "give" this example. In most PDF viewers it renders fine. Hopefully no-one will get too jacked up...
