High Hopes & Dark Dreams for DOOM!!!

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in DOOM: The Board Game

Talk about a blast form the past!

Wow FFG this is a fun surprise to be sure. So what are we old school DOOM'ers Hoping and Dreaming to see done with this excellent game property?

Awesomeness FFG!

I would have loved to see app support for a solo/fully coop campaign.

I Agree Ben.

Same here.

I hope they'll have a demo at Gen Con next week.

I hope they produce properly the dice this time. A more or less balanced game would be welcome, also :) I love the old Doom, but discovered it too late to have my dice replaced or find the expansion in English. Too bad, I hope they clean the design and make it a blast from the start this time. Hopes are high, do we know who's the designer behind the new baby?

so what type of games is this? I love Space Hulk, is this similar?

I don't think so, beyond the simple premise of minis in a board, good guys vs bad guys. Based on the description, this is a more sophisticated revamp of the original doom, which is the grandpa of actual Descent. Space Hulk is just one on one, and the hourglass is a factor. This is one vs many and the mechanics (dice and cards) remind me more of Gears of war (at least for the marines, since GoW is cooperative) than anything else.

ok well I'll check it out for sure. Never played Descent but I heard it's quite good. Don't feel like painting more minis though xD

I don't understand how, at this point, they aren't developing games like this to be fully coop or at least including a coop variant. I'll save my money for something else.

Wow, Joe posting outside of the X-Wing forum. It's official, Doom is a thing ;)

Count me in for the campaign (possibly coming with expansions? c'mon FFG we have the pp for Descent and for Mansions and the campaign for Armada, make our dreams come true and go further that a mere core set with minis!)

What Julia said FFG... get it going Brothers!

Yeah they got with this one, cause you can play solo or as a team and so forth, but yeah get some tech add on goodies here people, because that is all kinds of new fun!

:D

I don't have any specific hopes for the mechanics of the game, but I do hope they maintain the horror angle that the original game did so well. As I mentioned in the other thread, keeping limited ammo in some form would be a big step in that direction. In my experience, the way to make a board game "scary" is as follows:

1) limit important resources, not to the point of starvation, but at least so that players are constantly keeping an eye on them

2) make death omnipresent. At every turn, even at full health, there should be a lingering fear of imminent grisly demise.

3) obscure as many details as possible (witihin reason - not to say that everything must be hidden.) IIRC, in 1E, the whole map was laid out up front, but the contents of each room were not revealed until a marine poked his head in. This worked fine for keeping the mystery alive in terms of exploration. (The marines had a floorplan, but no idea what was lurking around the corner.)

4) make death permanent! I can live with KO in Descent because it's fantasy, but if marines can always get back up, it would ruin DOOM. Give them a "critically wounded" mid-status to soften the blow, but if they can't receive first aid within a couple turns, they're gone for good!

If I were in charge of this game, I would err on the side of making things too difficult rather than too easy. Done properly with a horror theme, TPKs should leave the players clambering to try again. Besides, expansion material will make things easier in the future. :P

I have no objection to an app and/or solo play, although it's not a must-have in my books. An app could work wonders for point #3, though...

Actually, thinking about it a bit more, I think an app could be a BRILLIANT addition to DOOM. If nothing else, it could play creepy DOOM-style music while you play, interjected with the occasional monster growl or scream (I'm thinking of classic DOOM's soundtrack here) and that alone would go a long way to enhancing the atmosphere.

Playing on the heels of Pokemon Go's AR success, and with the proper thought put toward art on the tiles, you could even make a "Line of Sight checker" in the app. You hold your phone over the board, roughly centered on your marine, and the app could artificially add shadows based on distance from your figure and/or obstacles (again, with proper thought put into the art so that a phone's camera could detect obstacles on the board.) The app could then highlight which monsters are within line of sight, thus eliminating the ever-present LoS debates!

I mean, I'm sure that functionality would be fraught with bugs on release, but those bugs could be fixed over time until it works like a well-oiled, mind-blowing machine! THAT'S the sort of app integration that I think will really revolutionize board gaming, once a company emerges who can show us all how it's done!

I don't see an app coming for this one, mostly because it's taken from a VG. I know an app implementing a BG is not a VG, but still, possibly it's better keeping the two worlds detatched.

You just might be right on this one... but FFG has been sneaky with X-WING... so I will just set back and happily wait to see what we get in the next year.

;)

Fair point, Joe ;) One of the best things creted for Doom 1st edition was a custom made campaign developed by Shnar, where Marines actually moved from planet to planet within the galaxy inhabitated by demons. If developers could create something similar for this game here, well.. *drool*

I think we can expect plenty of cool ...

:)

I stopped painting miniatures a couple of years ago, but these look absolutely stunning enough to start painting again. :)

Or time to learn how to paint (for me at least) ;)

Well this is going to be fun. If you mess up on the monsters they'll still look pretty fine.

:D

I'm hoping to see deathmatch and capture the flag rules. From the looks of the previews, DOOM could work well as a skirmish wargame.

It is pretty much like Space Hulk... already.
