Question regarding tournament turnouts from the early days of X-Wing

By Lyraeus, in X-Wing

I didn't see anyone address the question of what Imdaar Alpha was. It was the pre-release tournament for Wave 4. It was effectively a lot like Armada's Massing at Sullust tournaments in that the final round was played with the soon-to-be-released materials, which some of the top-scoring players were allowed to take home, giving them about a month to play with those before everyone got them.

I attended the one at Guardian Games (Portland, OR), and while I don't know the exact numbers, I'd say there were about 12 players there.

In 2013, I think NC had at least two Regionals (maybe more). I went to the one in Cary (can't remember the store's name, pretty sure it's defunct now). It had a grand total of 4 people and 2 rounds of play. My partner and I both won our first game, then were paired in the second round. She won, and was rewarded with a fat, shiny trophy and a hilarious story of becoming 2013 Regional Champion.

The Imdaar Alpha tournament I attended (also in Cary, but at Gamer's Armory) had 6 people at it and 3 whole rounds.

Sadly, can't remember the numbers at the Kessel Run (a prerelease for Wave 2, so 2012?) tourney I went to in Durham (Atomic Empire's the store), but I think it was between 10 and 20. A far cry from the ~110 players we had at this year's Regionals.

It seems that all miniature games take roughly 2-3 years to mature to that point. The ones that stabilize good get high numbers later on and grow the ones that don't fail. . .

I also heard that in 2013 they scheduled a Regional tournament for the NW region in Spokane, WA, because that is so very close to the major population centers in that region. I heard that about 8 people showed up. I'd say that was more a function of locale than the inherent strength of X-Wing at the time. But, again, this is rumor that I've heard.

I won the Orlando regional in 2014 with 47 players. I went to 2 store championships before that in Jacksonville with 14 and 12 respectively. Went to 2 Imdaar alphas, one in Orlando with about 22 and one in Jacksonville with 16. Other kit tournaments that year were usually around 10.

And I have a buddy that went to the Florida regional in 2013 and there were about 12

Thank you! This is really helping out a lot!

Maybe. 8 people for a brand new type of tournament for a brand new game might just be natural. So far it is sounding that way.

When I say "so very close to the major population centers", I hope you realize I'm being ironic.

Boy, Lyraeus, you really are determined to win that argument with HERO, aren't you?

I started playing between waves 3 and 4. Don't remember the actual date. During that time I went to just a basic store tourney in Akron, Ohio that had, I think, 10 people.

I just wish they still had cool event names like 'Kessel Run' and 'Imdaar Alpha'.
