Spending Focus on blanks...

By Krimsonscythe, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Caveat... This came up in my last game of the night and I was definitely a bit into my cups at that point so....

My opponent rolled 4 green dice, all blanks. He had two focus assigned. He immediately declared that he is spending a Focus. This was to allow an upgrade to kick in, for the life of me I can't recall which one. But I believe the wording is "when you spend a focus..."

I questioned hte validity of spending a Focus to do nothing as there was nothing there to spend the Focus on. The reply was that you can spend a Focus to change zero results.

Why I haven't come across this despite playing almost weekly is weird or just the sudden clarity of alcohol... ;) so my question is simply can you spend, or I guess expend a Focus to literally do nothing so you can trigger an ancillary upgrade?

Yes you can. It's in the FAQ,

The text for spending tokens says:

When attacking, players may spend target locks and choose to reroll 0 attack dice. Additionally, players may spend a focus token even if they do not roll any [eyeball] results. When defending, players may spend focus tokens even if they do not roll any [eyeball] results and may spend evade tokens to add evade results in excess of the number of hit and critical hit results.

You can spend it if you roll no eyes, but IF you spend it, you MUST convert any eyes you do have. You can't spend it and leave eyes unconverted.

You also can only spend a focus for its default effect once per attack now.

Even Keyan can spend a stress when he rolled no eyeballs.

Makes him almost as much fun as Countess...
