So this full spoiling thing.....

By Ophion, in Star Wars: Armada

I remember posting a month or two ago or whenever it was that I was happier if FFG only "spoiled" a couple of the upgrade cards per expansion before release. This allowing a sense of surprise and chaos when the ships were finally released as we all tried to work things out in real games.

As opposed to everything being spoiled months before release so we can net-analyse everything to death and decide the optimum build before it even arrives....

Of course, right on cue we had the Fleet Commander competition and everything in Waves 3 and 4 spoiled!!! Which of course has been great fun and Ive been netlisting my wave 3 and 4 fleets as much as everyone else.

So what do we think? Is spoiling EVERYTHING early before release something we like? Or would we like only partial previews????

Of course the third possibility is that FFG has sneakily snuck more upgrade cards into the packs and kept them secret up until now, which would be epicly awesome.

No more previews....It would certainly keep the Bothans alive.

Spilling everything for Armada makes more sense in context.

X-Wing is currently on its third major release in a one year period (TFA Core, Wave 8, Wave 9). There is plenty of info to pass around with 10 new ships and a dozen new releases.

Armada is on its second release in a year. And I say second, because despite the numbering these sets are releasing at the same time. Those sets were fully spoiled so that people could see how thoroughly the new ships are going to change the game going forward, and also because there just wasn't that much to spoil. Now people see their faith rewarded, not only in the preview articles but also in the commander contest, which is doing for the broader community what the Vassal league is doing here. Even if you don't want the Flotillas, you want something in the Liberty or Interdictor.

The Corellian Conflict release seems like a return to the old ways now that payers aren't genuinely concerned about the fate of the game, and with as many as five new releases coming soon they can afford to hold information back as a surprise. Expect a similar holding back when the new ships are eventually revealed.

I prefer to get spoiled. It keeps all those tactical discussions alive and fuels most of the rules subforum topics at the moment. Which in turn helps to survive till next release.

I like the two tier spoilers where basically everything is reveled. Our announcement teasers are one of my favourite as it baits us with some tasty fleet morsels and lets us go crazy on what the rest might be. For the most part, that's fine with me for quite a while as it promotes interesting theories, designs, ideas, and discussions. That's good enough for a few weeks for me, but I like the more complete spoilers that come out a week or two before the wave finally comes out.

The reasons for this are purely selfish: not everyone gets the releases at the same time. Yanks tend to get it up to a week before us up north (usually a few days, but that's a few days plus finding time in my schedule to drive a hundred miles to pick up my new fleet shinies). And that tends to just feel like they're rubbing our noses in it. But we know when FFG's usual 'preview' days are, so it becomes a more equal opportunity discovery a negligible amount of time before they're released to the general public.

Don't we have one more pseudo-spoiler coming for Wave IV, IE, 'what's the support slot upgrade card in the Liberty pack?' It's not new, we know all the cards, but which one exactly is it I don't think was ever really answered.

Anyhow, I like FFG's usual announcement+preview method, that suits me just fine. But with something as big as the CCCP coming up, I could see a few previews highligting what becomes drastically different, what gets put into the main Armada game, etc, as it's a release that seems set to change some of the core elements.

I like to be able to work out what I should buy in advance.

Aye, I'm also a fan of the tiered announcement -> spoiler article style, especially since I have a weakness for theorycrafting and theoretical fleetbuilding well before I actually buy anything

I want more details, and I want it yesterday! No excuses!!!

I like having the details, especially from a purchasing-standpoint, knowing what I would need to get to try different builds. Also, you can plan all you want, but a lot of times you really don't get a good sense of what certain upgrades do for you until you hit the table and learn how to use them, and what their limitations/counters are.

I dont see how I would or should like to have less information and not as much as possible.

Releasing all the upgrade cards is a good move to generate purchases because it generates theories and some form of vision of what each Admiral can do !

If you buy a car, you'd love it If the manufacturer told you all the important stuff, wouldn't you ? :P

Purchasing unknowns is a little too risky for many people !

The full spoiler was 3 weeks before the ships hit the shelves.

I love full spoilers. But at the same time, if out of no where with no warning at all and as a complete an utter surprise, an additional ship drops with this wave (or any future subsequent wave) I would love it. One, it would bash all our netlisting to powder, while still giving the community the intangible benefit of theorycrafting, which is engagement with the game. And Two, it would do it in a way that no one would be mad about and drive even deeper engagement as now everyone is playing catch up to integrate the new pieces.

Who among us would be mad if when we arrived at our FLGS to pick up our new toys we found that FFG secretly shipped the Arquitens or Quasar Fire with it to shake things up?

I like to be able to work out what I should buy in advance.

Let us cut the nonsense, gentlemen: if we post on this forum, we all know that "everything" is the answer to this question for us.

The real question is - how many copies ;)

This.

Spoil it all!!!

Caldias posted everything from Wave 4 that he won in the fleet design contest. It's Engine Techs.

Aye, that I saw. Thanks mate. I'm a bit disappointed about it not being something a little more exotic but I'm sure I'll perk up when we hear about some more shinies. Off topic, but I wonder if the Flight Commander and Fighter Coordination Teams are going to be the APT/TRC 'want it, need it' cards for this wave.

Another reason to mass release info early is, so everyone can pick up on any possible rule problems, and feedback that back to FFG. Allows FFG to collate a whole load of "free" Q&A, and release an errata/faq with the changes in it.

Also not sure how much use Imperials are going to get from Fighter Coordination Teams, seeing as it only goes on Gladiators/Interdictors.

Imperiale have been looking for a use on the Gladiator 2 for a while. Combined with the double blue AS attack and Demolisher, it becomes an extraordinarily cost efficient anti squadron platform.

Good point Ost King! It does let them get up some prompt erratas and feel out anything that needs an FAQ.

Actually, I'm kinda on the same wavelength as Sir Prickles there; the GSD-II is looking awfully appealing (even without Demo if you want to use it as a 'support' ship and retain the classic Clonisher Demo). While potentially overly pricey, I am sorta tempted to try out the GSD-II, FCT, Ruthless Strategist, Kallus, Demo 'thing'. That's a super hefty 82 points, but it could be quite a bit of fun to try. Especially in the Rieekan Aces builds I see a fair number of (and likely will continue to see thanks to the CCCP.

Surprises are for Christmas and birthdays, in regards to everything else I like to know all the information as soon as possible.

FFG realized that The BIG Boys play this game and so they decided to not play tickle-tail cuties about just showing stuff ASAP, which is why we got the made up BS W3 & W4 which I simply call Wave THOR.

That happened due to some issues with the new factories. From now on I think we can expect an entire wave with each ship being fully previewed in it's turn.

I'm a long standing fan of the Glad 2 even in wave 2. Combined with a GT ISD2 you are throwing 4 blue antisquad at everything.

More broadly - looks like peoples thoughts are pretty clear!
