End of the game?

By CeGir, in Warhammer 40,000: Conquest

I remember entering an instore bb competition to decide who would represent the store at games day and being told I would not be allowed to use my dark elf figures as they were the previous versions models. To give the store credit they did say that if I won (I didn't) then store staff would paint me up the required team free of charge.

Thats another problem. Indeed a requirement is using "current edition mini sculpt" if the rules changed from previous editions. For example in 40K a Lictor sculpt from 2nd edition couldnt be used in a 3rd or later edition tournament because they had different rules/sculpt.

I know there have been many threads GW-bashing and I myself have indeed added enough fuel to that and I kind-of wanted to step away from it a bit...., but... Just to add to this current theme, I have a close friend who is a truly awesome painter (even though he takes aaaaaaages) and about 17-ish years ago he was not allowed to enter a genuine Games Workshop mini into Golden Daemon because it was not current content.

Im not saying this was always the case or even is the case now, but then, it was indeed the case and it pretty much soured with me as his minis are fantastic and he would have surely got somewhere with it.

I never had heard of any of this and i'm not sure if this is GWs doing or of the person running the Golden Demon/that tournament, i know of an incident were a player was not allowed to play in a store because he used really old models, which is not good but GW had made lots of miniatures over the time and i think the minis used were Squats which they stopped realising in 1990 but another store worker or the internet helped to convince the guy these are geniune GW models.

In the early 2000s the GW Retail NA unit tried a series of tournaments with a requirement that only GW studio and Forgeworld paint schemes could be entered so that the games could photographed and used in White Dwarf and other publications. It did not go over well.

Interessting, never heard of that but i'm from europe and I have never heard anything like that around here.

great, now that i caught up buying the deluxe expansions and the missing warpacks...

Short of Games Workshop pulling the license, I really don't think you have much to worry about.

the author of this post is Fancymancer. There's one user named Fancymancer on BGG, which is Jonathan Ying, author of the new edition of Doom. If the two are the same guy, well, it's an interesting rumor

Yeah sure, my name is Jonathan Ying, I was one of the lead designers on Star Wars: Imperial Assault. I also designed the BattleLore undead expansions, I helped with the development of Forbidden Stars, and I was lead designer on A Game of Thrones: The Trivia Game and the upcoming DOOM: the Board Game.

A long while ago I talked on r/boardgames about how this subreddit literally directly led to my employment at FFG. So I'm pretty grateful to the sub."

Thing is though, anybody could use the name on Reddit so it may well be not Jonathan Ying and just total rumour/fabrication while mis-using his name. We will probably never know.

If that IS someone just "claiming" to be Jonathan Ying, they've gone to an awful lot of trouble, including being an established redditor for 5 years with various previous posts linking to his tumblr and deviantart, not to mention doing an AMA while working for FFG (takes only a few mins to check someone's Reddit posts).

Fair points yes I hadnt looked into the background just voiced a spur of the moment thought on it :)

That's pretty interesting. So, a guy who worked on Imperial Assault, which is a SW-related line, pointed out that GW and FFG parted ways because GW asked them to terminate a few SW-related lines. Looks like a tad bit than a mere rumor to me. In any case, if this is true, then GW simply wanted their relation to terminate (no one sane of mind will drop SW to get WH with the hope of making more money)

GW had hinted that X-Wing miniatures were encroaching on their tabletop lines when the game came out. FFG pointed out it was a vehicle game and nothing to do with any system GW had in place. The lawyers decided there were to many differences and things settled down.

When SW:IA came out GW really complained and FFG pointed out that it was a board game (see issue with Hasbro) and continued. GW continued to insist it was a violation of the license contract between GW and FFG but could not get a legal standing (I don't think they wanted to pull the license at that time, myst wanted FFG to stay in their own pond and not 'compete')

Changes at GW management brought increased attention to all licenses. When it was noted that boardgames used to be done in house a desire to expand GW and do so again grew. The board of directors still hate spending any money so the new initiative was pushed to Specialist games who are releasing Blood Bowl and others. They also started releasing things like Lost Patrol, Silver Tower, Betrayal at Calth and Deathwatch Overkill. All Miniatures games that use boards.

When the new board game initiative seamed to be working at GW they approached FFG and again asked that production stop on miniatures including all three SW games. FFG said no and GW said the License would not be renewed. Negotiations continued until early this year but no one was budging. Frying work stopped on all GW licensed product. Conquest play test ended and the Forbidden Suns team was released from contract.

FFG announces that they are making a table top miniatures game with figures that need to be assembled and painted. The game had been in development for over a year and was almost ready to ship. This suggests that FFG new the negotiations were not going to work and had 'plan B' ready to go. With this announcement if became clear that the license was ended.

FFG makes a public announcement of the end of the license with several left handed compliments while making it very clear that their fantasy miniatures war-game is a direct competitor to WGFB and AoS.

This is quite an interesting and plausible story. May I ask you why you know all these details / are allowed to share them publicly?

Stuff... Read above.

Good guessing. And also my opinion exactly.

I subscribe to many NA and EU trade magazines and web sites. I mean busniess and retailer trades like licensing, trademarking and even marketing. When you see a company like GW come to a licensing show for the first time in eight years you start by researching what happen eight years earlier. Also watch LinkedIn, BGG, Dice Tower, BoW, BoLS, and others for the interviews and rumors.

After all that, yes, you read between the lines and try to understand what is not being said.

I have also been in and out of the gaming and toy industries since the 1990sj. I have no direct link to either company and no inside source. Just lots of little hints and an understanding of standard busniess practices
