What Is Your Favorite X-Wing Podcast?

By Spacenin, in X-Wing

I don't remember if which ones, but some of them just went on, and on, and on, and were kinda boring. People got wrapped up in tournament reports which wasn't what I was interested in.

The only one I listen to now is Shuttle Tydirium. I sometimes skip the Captain's Question, but otherwise I enjoy listening to them. I like that they aren't hyper focused on the meta and telling us what's bad and what's good. My favorite episodes are the ones where they go in-depth about a particular mission and give some ideas on squad building for those missions.

I like all of them, but only seem to have time for Mynock, Nova, S&V, and Back to Dials. I especially like Mynock especially when Tyson pulls double duty on there when hes not on Back to Dials. I figure that

's why he always seems to refer any feedback to "[email protected]"

In order of like:

Back to Dials: beginner dials, and list head to heads which are always using crazy ships and combos that aren't used a lot in tournament.

Scum and Villainy: enjoy their comraderie and not afraid to talk about how they feel about topics

Nova Squadron Radio: enjoy how the hosts interact and they have gotten better on shortening episodes, used to be almost three hours

Stay on target: enjoy different perspective from different part of USA than I live

186th Squadron: enjoy hearing about another country since this one is out of England.

Kessel Run: enjoy this one as well

For me it's like Dr. Who. Your first is always your favorite. My favorite is the Ninth Doctor. Oh wait, I mean Back to Dials!

Now that I have full embraced all of them I do listen to them all. I organize them in iTunes and when available that's the listening order. When a new one comes in, I drop them into the queue. Here is the current order:

Back to Dials - First and still favorite. Who doesn't want more Asa? Also, best "commercials."

Radio TCX - Great short format. No messing about just give me the goods.

Mynock Squadron - Everyone either loves or hates Dee but Dallas Parker is why you should listen.

Gold Squadron - Newer and full of goodness. I love the alternating casual/competitive format.

Scum and Villainy - The pirate theme is fun, and the discussion is solid.

Imperial Propaganda Radio - Great new entry from Down Under. The all Imperial theme is right up my ally.

186th Squadron - British quality. This one is getting better every episode.

Cloud City Radio - More British good. They do have sound issues from time to time.

Stay on Target - Probably unfairly low here. Good stuff, just a bunch of podcasts out there. I like how Gordon is becoming a regular.

NOVA - Clearly top quality for the top competitors. Which I am not. Plus the run time is an issue.

Hella Squadron - Fun show, just need more episodes.

512 Squadron - Just started listening and like it so far. I am definitely not opposed to more "E" podcasts.

Kessel Run - At some point there is just too many, these guys fall victim to that. Although I am now store/regional champ I tend to gravitate away from casual podcasts. Their epic podcast was reLly good though.

The Shuttle Tydirium - See Kessel Run for this low placement. Looking forward to binge listening to the HotAC shows they have as I get ready to drive across the country next week.

That's it. For now. Didn't realize there were so many I listen too. I just saw Evergreen. Guess I need to add another.

1. Mynock (Farmer, Dee and Tex are a great synergy), love the rants and just a great mix. Nice catalogue of heady mental tactics in older casts.

2. Back to Dials (pretty advanced stuff, but funny at times, great voices)

3. Shuttle Tydirium - good casual stuff

4. Nova - for Paul Heaver and Juggler. Mostly can skip the rest, but those two make it worth speeding through to find them

5. TCX a good short one

6. S&V, Kessel Run, Stay on Target also good if you have the time

Radio TCX is in a separate category for me. They are strictly informational and really nice change of pace from the other guys. They are great to listen to and always look forward to them.

1. Nova is great to listen to when Paul is there. Kris can talk too much.

2. Back to Dials have two hosts that are amazing

3. Mynock is fun to listen too, Dallas needs to talk more, Dee needs to talk less, and Ryan is fine. Dee is great, but dude you're cutting into Dallas' air time haha

4. Shuttle Tydirium is great, J-Bot needs to learn x-wing lol. Chadwick is cool and intellectual except for Phantoms. The other one that I'm blanking on that seems really knowledgeable on x-wing should correct J-Bot more cuz I know when J-Bot says "Stealth Fighter" he's gotta be as cringing as I am haha.

5. Imperial Propaganda has some wicked accents and I love Australia

6. Stay on Target is good but not in my top tier

7. Kessel Run has better bumper music than 512 Squadron for sure

8. Gold Squadron's quality has been going up and I can see them getting in the top half pretty soon.

9. 512 Squadron has worse music than Kessel Run.

EDIT: Forgot about S&V, they probably be tied or just ahead of Mynock.

SMART, FUN, ZERO EGO, WITH A FAIR AMOUNT OF ELITIST META-HATE...

I listen to as many as I can. These are the ones in my podcast app.

1. Scum and Villainy

2. Back to Dials

3. Radio TCX

4. Mynock

5. Stay On Target

6. 186th

7. Nova

8. Gold Squadron

Tough call on the best. My favorites are Scum & Villainy, NOVA Squadron, Mynock Squdron, and The Kessel Run.

I also like the Jodo Cast, but they're not X-wing only.

Scum and Villainy seems to be a favorite. Are they on the itunes store?

All the ones I listed can be found on iTunes.

Most of them are good but Nova Squadron stands out. Mostly because of MajorJuggler. His mathematical approach adds a whole other dimension to their tactical discussions.

Can I tell my favorites even if I have a podcast? I'll exclude my own.

I really like the Kessel Run a lot. They don't get caught up in the tournament scene as much as others. They did just do a good one on epic, which is great to hear.

Scum & Villainy is pretty good, as well. They are a little more tournament centric, but I like the style of the show and the hosts.

NOVA Squadron Radio is a great bunch of guys, but they are the hyper competitive type. I find myself skipping parts where they review new material as most of it ends in the trash bin with only 1-3 cards from each wave being "worthy" of the top tables. It's the type of X-wing I'm not interested in.

I haven't tried Mynock Squadron beyond the one episode where they covered casual play, but I hear they are pretty competitive. If I had time for another, I probably would.

Stay on Target - being of the southeast, I enjoy this podcast. Simple and to the point, they engage in some good casual gaming as well as small scale tourney material. If I have one gripe about this one, is that there's too much cheese on the party tray. Tone down the flavor, and just get on with it. There aren't any ewok cabin crew. Stop goofing.

Does Stay on Target do ewok cabin crew, as well? I thought we were the only ones that did that. :)

I was going to say, "Well if you don't like that, you're going to hate Shuttle Tydirium..." :P

Haha I have to confess that I don't know anything about ewok cabin crew. We typically only have Bothans that we mourn every episode.

Since we're based on Endor, we use a lot of Ewok crew. Ground crew, cabin crew, entertainment, furniture, catering services...

Sloshfiction is like my drunk kitchen meets wine about it, only it's nerdy stuff like why voyager was a bad star trek, and x wing AARs.

I'll leave my own cast out of the running like heychadwick;

I listen to just about every podcast out there, but I particularly enjoy Mynock Squadron for a good banter-y meta analysis, NOVA for the hard-edge analysis and great crew, scum and villainy for sheer fun atmosphere.

I have listened to TCX, Scum and Villainy, and Shuttle Tydirium. So far I love them all. Next up is Mynock.

NOVA Squadron Radio

Paul Heaver is on last episode. Check it out.

I love me some Back to Dials. I want to poach Producer Joe!

Mynock for the banter, and faked arrogance. That is, they are what my group of friends was most like, before I moved away for work reasons...

Back to dials, the ads are the cherry on top, though it runs a bit long.

Scum&Villainy, though the theme is sometimes taken too far for my taste.

I'm new to actually caring about podcasting and have limited time to tune in, so I haven't actually listened to the others. Though I do have Tydirium, Stay on Target and NOVA loaded in my app, should I ever find time for them. Realistically, I've got like 5-6 hours a week to listen, so I likely won't get to more than 3-4 podcasts with their current lengths.

I do get to sit at my desk and listen to what ever during the day so I hammered out Myn and Shut Ty in two weeks. I am super happy I can listen to the goods.

Yeah, I can't work and listen to podcasts at the same time, I actually need to focus on the kind of work I'm doing. If my job was more manual, that may be a possibility.

Like many, I'd imagine, I've started to drop off of certain casts & pick others up. Things get tedious, certain hosts start to grate, a show becomes repetitive, show releases get further apart, the quality drops off -- any number of things can contribute to a listener taking a break from a show.

I think it's great that there are sooo many now, though, and it's very cool that every cast is someone's favorite. A huge thanks to all of you who put in such effort to keep us all thinking about X-wing all day.

Currently I'm only following:

Back To Dials

Shuttle Tydirium

Stay On Target

But due to this thread I've added Gold Sqd, Imperial Propaganda and Radio TCX to my podcatcher. Have to give 'em a listen!
