What Happens if You Run a 200 Point Game?

By Boba Rick, in X-Wing

Having some friends over and there will be four of us. I'm thinking about having two teams, two players each with their own 100 point squad.

Is this a terrible idea? Will a 1 hour game turn into 3? Or do ships die faster and it's about the same?

What will happen?

There will be lots of bumping, rolling of dice and shenanigans.

It will take around twice as long as a regular game. Unless everyone loads up on Connor Nets.

6 Jumps vs 12 crack TIEs. Who will win???

To reduce the number of ships I was thinking about putting a beefed up large based ship on each side. So you have one guy playing small ships, another playing the large ship with maybe a TIE or Z-95.

What will happen?

Lots of fun, probably.

It will last atleast 2 hours but probably 3

Larger ships mean more health to get through and a bigger footprint on the table. Even if the other two are only running aces you're looking at a minimum of 8 small based ships and 2 large on a 3 x 3 playing area.

Still going to be a lot of bumpage.

Might end up like a game of monopoly where one or two are eliminated early and that player gets bored fast as it could take a while to play that out. Try two sets of 60pt lists or have a 4 player free for all.

Every man for himself furballs are the best. But team play isn't bad either.

just play with 20 asteroids its a hoot.

Did you ever play Game of Thrones?

You will have a crap ton of fun. It will take a full evening, c. 2-3 hours. We play Team Epic all the time (200 points per player, 2 players per team = 800 points on the table), and have never had problems with a player losing all his ships and having nothing better to do. OTOH, by the time one player is out, the ending is usually obvious and inevitable, so the losers concede the game in the interest of heading home at a reasonable hour.

Note that the meta is 100% different; players who like to arc dodge are really gonna have to work for it.

Actually, it might be best to play with NO asteroids, come to think of it.

@Baaa: I've been working on some lists and I've managed to make it be about 5 smalls and 1 large on each side, so far.

@ Cr0aker: Very, very true. I think I'll need to come up with some preventative measures for that. I'm thinking a point limit scored: score 150 points and you win.

@ Darth Meanie: Glad to hear the meta is different. That probably helps balance things out.

I'm thinking no secret table talk. Everything must be discussed openly or not discussed at all.

We played a game with 1 epic ship per side and 400 points per team. It was 2 on 3 but the rule was you couldn't talk to the other people on your team about your movement. It took a while to get through the first round or two of moving because most people were not familiar with the epic ship rules, but it was ok once it got going. Although some hilarity did ensue when two large based ships crashed into the blockade runner in one turn.

What will happen?

Lots of fun, probably.

What he said.

I have been thinking about the 2 vs 2 game as well. I was thinking 100 points per person was too much, while 50 seems too few. I was thinking about 60 per person, or perhaps 75. Anybody have opinions on the magic number ?

I was debating this originally, then I looked to Imperial Assault's pattern for the answer.

In IA, a 1v1 match consists of 40 points each side, and you win by scoring 40 points. Sound familiar? Well, when they recently introduced team 2v2, each side still has 40 points - but you don't score 80 points to win, you score 60. So, my reasoning is to run 200 points each side, then 200 x .75 = 150 points to win.

We have been playing no asteroids for awhile, cuz we thought, "well, space is mostly empty." We played for the first time in a while with asteroids last night.. . way different, way more fun.

Without asteroids, it often falls out to be a 1800s-style battle of 2 lines of ships advance/joist, with the most durable ships making the cut.

Asteroids break up the lines and create corridors of attack which must be navigated.

OTOH, give it a try once for the experience of it. It's won't ruin the game by any stretch, and might make it go faster.

Middle ground: 3 asteroids.

The magic number is "how long do you want to play?" For every 200 points total on the table, the game takes about 1 hour.

Not true. More ships means they die faster. It's longer but not that much longer.

I have been playing with the idea of "Roll 3d4 = number of asteroids on the table." Then it changes for each battle.

Its a great idea. It will be 2-3 hours but the time will fly by because you are having so much fun. Also, the first 2-3 rounds of shooting usually see a lot of damage done due to just so many guns focusing on 2 or 3 ships per side.

With that many points, it is way easier to focus fire, so arc dodging aces have no where to hide. Soontir, Omega Leader and others can withstand 1 or 2 massive attacks and come out ok, but once their tokens (and Palps) are gone they die like any other Tie.

On the other hand, generics with 3 attack reign supreme in this format. Also, Etahn A'baht's crit ability is amazing with a bunch of Talas and Red Squadron X's. I recommend 2 or 3 Assault and Ion Torpedoes. They can wreck a formation in seconds.

I am with the 'no asteroids' crowd.

1. Space is empty, and

B. What kind of crazy pilot would deliberately fly into an asteroid field.

This is balanced by the fact that more dials need to be set and more moves need to be made, so the game speeds up as it goes along.

I really enjoy playing doubles for a total of 200 a side.

just make it 4x3 rather than 3x3. done.
