Introducing Yuuzhan Vong in a campaign

By MrMarmot, in Game Masters

Hey guys,

First time poster but long time lurker here (so many interesting resources and discussions here!)

So I've started this new campaign with my lovely wife and on of my best friends who respectively play a Rodian Big Game Hunter / Modder (Kar'so) and a Togruta Gambler / Pilot (Blaze) aaaaaand... I think I might have shot myself in the foot allowing my wife to pick certain elements of background for her Rodian.

One of Kar'so's main motivations for leavind his clan and planet was to understand the Yuuzhan Vongs ' motivations for creating the Vagh Rodiek , put an end to it and destroy all said Vagh Rodiek, which he sees as both an exciting prey (he is a big game hunter after all) and an abomination.

The first obvious issue is timeline : I should have researched it when my wife mentioned it, but the events with the Vagh Rodiek are supposed to happen during the Yuuzhan Vong War in 26 ABY, while we are playing in regular EOTE period, so way earlier. Since none of it is canon and my two players haven't read the comics anyway, I figure I'm willing to let it slide and make it so Rodians being abducted and experimented on happened outside of the context of an all-out galaxy invasion by the Yuuzhan Vong, which would be kind of hard to squeeze into our current timeline.

So OK, some Rodians were abducted, experimented on and turned into ugly crab-like crazy warbeasts and our resident hunter wants to understand and stop the perpetrators of this madness, I can roll with that. Except... I don't want my wife's character to hit a brick wall in our campaing (let alone retcon her character's background), but let's face it : interfering with an entire race of genetically enhanced masochistic zealots who are supposed to almost succeed in invading the galaxy about 30 years later, killing billions upon billions of individuals in the process... her chances of success are fairly low.

Plus, I figure I need to keep the threat moderate enough to avoid making these guys into a bigger, better, badder villain than the Empire.

So I'm having a hard time finding inspiration. The only leadd I found is to have this be eiter the unsanctioned work of a dissident group of Yuuzhan Vong (but what about the rest of them? I doubt they would be "court martialling" the dissidents for their actions, they would probably give them a medal for the success of their research...), or some kind of preparation work for the invasion they are planning 20-30 years later (maybe they are taking "samples" from mutliple species to analyze how they react to various unpleasant stimuli and see if they can weaponize them).

But none of my leads really satisfy me, I still get the impression that it would feel awkwardly shoehorned into the campaign, so I'm turning to you, seeing how creative some people around here are :)

Ouch... full hit with a Triumph for crit +80 on your poor foot.

Ok to introduce the Vong in a campaing is hard (and most people here seem to antagonize with the hole theme  ) introducing them in the timeline of the Galactic Civilwar is even harder... but Ok let's have a look at it.

In the legends book "Rouge Planet" we learn for the first time of " Zonama Sekot", the former Jedi "Vegere" and of an Unknow Alien-Force later be scripted as the Yuuzhan Vong. The book takes places after the incidents of Ep.1 TPM (30-29 BBY).

It is also later confirmed that the Vong during theire first visit, took several species as to learn about the cultures of this galaxy and getting sick of them relying on unnatural beeings like computers, droids and so on.

Also we know that there were Vong-Infiltrators within the whole galaxy when the Vong started their first wave of invasion-forces in 26 ABY.

So you could rule, that your wife, or better Kar'sos family was taken captive by the Vong, may be she was even born in capture, and held captive on Bimmel (where the Vong installed a base 25 BBY). For some reason she was able to escape (with or without parents) when in the age of 10-15, ever since she had a grudge against the Vong.

But well, not knowing that the base was on Bimmel, and nobody believing her (and her parents/ co-escapes) that there is an outer-galactic races that infiltrates this galaxis and that hates all kind of technologie(She will be looked at like someone that screams ourdays that some Alien had abducted him recently), she decides to take the matter in her own hands.

But those infiltrators are more then hard to detect, the look and behave like the omni-present humans and only very close oberservation and knowledge can help to find the slight differences.

The biggest hints for her would be when ever she gets a info on technophobian beeings, sometimes she will meet just plain people that have just issues... but than again... sometimes she maybe will find more.

So my advice, use the Vong only sparely, let them never be more than 3 at a time (sleeper-cells) but those 3 should be Nemesis that can handle brawl, meele and Range(light) very well with a high Adversarytalent and since they are masochistic zealots of doom, they get stronger with every crit they eat (Honor of Wounds)

That way the Empire is still the Big Bad Ruling Institution, and you can put in some "Vong-Spice" so she can use her obligation.

Nightone covered a lot of it. Infiltrators, advance scouts, etc. are probably the way to go in that timeframe. In prepping a D6 New Jedi Order era campaign years ago, I borrowed from Curtis Saxton's Star Wars Technical Commentaries (hosted on theforce.net) and made, for example, the Teezl from the old Marvel comics series a piece of Vong bio-tech. I also decided that the "Rider in the Void" from Marvel #38 was the last survivor of the Vong's enemy in their home galaxy.

Just do what feels like it works for the campaign.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the advice, infiltrators indeed seem like the way to go, this is the missing part to make my "invasion prep work idea" work. And I like the idea of Honor of the Wounds a lot!

Glad I could be of help! :)
