Force Powers and Force Rating - Clarification

By RicoD, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello!

This is a quick one, and I'm probably a big dumb dumb for not getting it.

Does one require additional Force Rating in order to buy more than one Force Power?

Say I have a Force Rating of 1 and have bought Force Power: Move, can I then buy Force Power: Sense despite having only Force Rating 1? Or do you have to raise your Force Rating to an equal number of desired Force Powers first?

One of my Force Sensitive PCs is getting up there and it was somewhat unclear to us.

Thanks. :)

Certain Force Powers have a restriction on the Force Rating needed before acquiring that Power (such as Battle Meditation requiring a FR 2+), however, any Force Power for which the player meets the restrictions can be acquired by spending the appropriate experience (by RAW).

Many GMs will require the Force user to have someone teach the power before they allow it to be purchased and, as Force users progress down the Force trees, this requirement may be enforced in cases when simple acquisition of the power may not be restricted.

It looks like the purchasing of Force powers requires XP and not Force points, though there is a Force point prerequisite for said Force powers. So as long as the character meets that prerequisite and has the 10 XP to buy the base power, should be good to go.

RAW, I let my PCs choose whatever they can afford XP-wise, assuming they meet the Force point gating requirement. I've considered requiring story-based restrictions (such as a teacher) for Force powers, but have only done this for Lightsaber combat (which is a much more doctrinal skill than the Force, which in my interpretation could be learned intuitively by a wide range of people).

The only time Force Rating comes into play when buying a new Force Power is needing to have a specific rating to buy into the more advanced powers that are found in Force and Destiny, such as Battle Meditation and Bind (FR 2) or Protect/Unleash (FR 3).

Apart from that, you can purchase as many Force powers as you want, however your XP is going to be very widely spread across multiple powers, making said character less effective than a Force user that's focused on only a couple of powers.
