Thane, the sorta scout

By ficklegreendice, in X-Wing

hey guys,

with all the hype surrounding the fang, it's easy to lose sight of the sexiest ship in the game (by far, the ARC :P )

for the purposes of this thread, that means this guy

swx53-thane-kyrell.png

ignoring the many obvious differences between the two ships, Thane is about the only rebel ship capable of (efficiently, though r2-d6 deadeye horton can use protons very well) emulating the Overclocked R4 Scout's torpedo attacks and he can do it without deadeye

All you need is his ability, i.e a target-lock that can be taken during combat but before he attacks (re: versus PS > 4), and a focus for your normal action. This gives you a focus leftover after spending the TL to fire plasmas, and an unused mod slot for g-chips

Why is this so cool even though it doesn't use deadeye? because, just like deadeye,

1.) You don't have to rely on low PS target-locks, you just have to have the enemy in arc

2.) because it triggers after the enemy's attack, it cannot be slapped off by things like Dengaroo's countermeasures or Wes Jenson or Black One when it comes out

of course, given the rebel alliance's weird fetish for single torpedo slot ships, you're only getting one plasma out of the deal :(

On the plus side, since deadeye is not needed, Thane has an open ept slot (r4-d6 only, sadly) and an open crew slot to help him out. While rebels have nothing like 4-lom yet, we're waiting on two new crew options from Heroes of the Resistance (as well as one unique astromech)

just something for any rebel enthusiast to keep an eye on going forward

Too bad he only has two actions. So he could get a hundred free ones and do nothing.

not even epic will give you a 100 free actions

and you only need two

step 1: focus

step 2: free action TL

step 3: enjoy

There's the tricky part... you only get that TL if your opponent cooperates and attacks something else. If he attacks Thane, then no torp.

I agree with this idea. I talk about it in my podcast that....just got released! I think it's a good one.

I also think giving him Vectored Thrusters is a good idea, too. Enemy might not want to get in Thane's firing arc, so a free Barrel Roll can't hurt to make sure you get the enemy in firing arc and maybe ensure you are at R2-3.

That's why Biggs is his best friend (even if Luke is Bigg's best friend).

only problem with VTs is no g-chips :(

R7-t1 maybe?

Biggs in general is just someone you always want to have around your slow 1-agility ships that tend to get burnt down pretty quickly on approach

so you're getting the torps off

if you want to continue using Thane after Biggs is dead, make the third ship a powerful late-game that your opponent either can't ignore or does ignore and is therefore helping you win by attacking Thane (i.e, the second Biggs) instead

a rebel regenerator fits the bill here

soon as I get my hands on this sexy sexy ship, I'm definitely flying a pair (plasma Thane and regen Norra) with Biggs

You forgot step 4: profit! $$$$$

With that load out or maybe even APT + R7 - T1 and Biggs you have a Dengar like effect. You could potentially make your opponent abandon a shots on two of your fighters to not reap the pain that comes afterwards.

APTs are getting a weeeeeeeeeeee bit expensive :P

I'd want him on the lower side of the cost scale, given he's probably serving as the second Biggs after the first one has bit the dust

besides, four fully modified dice at range 1 are plenty scary as is

I also think R5-D8 might not be a bad option, either, as long as you aren't focus fired down.

Saboteur is also something to think about. I mean....it's a chance of turning a hit into a crit. Not horrible option.

Cut those stupid phallus-cannons off and maybe you'd be right.

I think VT will be an auto-include. Repositioning mid-combat is way too juicy to pass up.

Other than that, it's hard to build him because you want him on the cheap side but the few viable combos from astro/crew shoot his price up.

I considered R7 Astro/Weapons Engineer to give him some defense after Biggs is gone, but 33 pts and no offense boost kinda hurts.

Maybe just VT, Tail Gunner and title will end up being enough, with maybe a filler astro (R2?), if there's room.

VT Thane is a whole other ballgame than Torpedo Thane. G-chips are non-negotiable if running plasmas; they're way too good

Tailgunner will probably find its way into either build, though. K-turning Thane will stress him, obviously turning off his ability, so you're probably going to end up jockeying with his aux arc after the first pass

problem with that is two dice, even with a free focus mod, sucks . Tailgunner compensates for that

Swx53-tail-gunner.png

filler mecs will depend on the ultimate state of the dial, but I'm always on the lookout for a home for R5-x3 because it can give you some game changing flexibility

r5-x3.png

31 points for Tailgunner, VTs, R5-X3 and ditto Tailgunner, Plasmas; G-chips

It just hit me that Thane would be a good blocker. Blocked ship is still technically in your Arc but can't shoot you, and hopefully one of your two Arcs has a shot on another enemy that now has two modifiers.
