Dream a Dream with me - alt Core set box each year.

By Cubanboy, in X-Wing

I was kicking this around but what IF, FFG each year put out an Alt Core set with the two finalist lists from Worlds each Year, as a limited collector box.

Allow the winner and runner up, to give tips and thoughts about how the game went and how to play with thoughts about building a winning list and playing your best. Put in Alt paint jobs, Alt art work, Alt dice with some sweet movement templates.

IDK I think it could be fun, and it would have 6 atk and 6 def dice in a core set.

Nice dream. Even a scum box set...

Sounds like a production nightmare tbh.

Would be super cool though!

My dream ends with me having more cardboard maneuver templates and dice than a man rightly needs.

sounds expensive

Would be lovely, but we have to remember that some of these lists are worth 100+ $ in expansions required. That might mean losses for FFG rather than profit, especially since making these wouldn't be cheap.

Yep, I'd wager the winning Palp-Ace set would cost something towards $200.00 ....I'd wager there would be a very limited number of people who would pony up that dough.

What about 6 Jump masters?

I really like the idea behind this. A new way to get the "new hotness" but with our luck the first time they try to do this the final would be a mirror match.

So if a talented flyer took 5 A-Wings to the finals, vs 3 Jumpmasters you'd get a core set with 8 ships?

The 2015 box would contain

2 T70 X-Wing

2 Y-Wings

1 Z-95

1 E-Wing

1 A-Wing

2 x Poe Dameron (ps 8)

2 Gold Squadron Pilot

1 Corran Horn

1 Prototype Pilot

1 Bandit Squadron Pilot

2 R2-D2

1 R3-A2

1 R5-P9

2 Twin Laser Turret

1 Chardaan Refit

2 Autothrusters

1 BTL-A4 Y-Wing

1 FCS

1 PTL

1 EU

1 VI

Plus the pilot cards for the reverse side of the bases.

How would you price this expansion of 7 small ships and a few high end upgrades?

I'd be very ok with it - I'd actually also be VERY ok with a new core set for each movie. No one HAD to buy the TFA core set, so long as they don't make these compulsory purchases, I'd be totally onboard.

Palpmovile -> Imperial raider + Imperial Shuttle

Juked inquisitor -> Prototype + Starviper + Tie/Fo

Omega leader -> Tie/fo

Wampa -> Imperial carrier

265$ aprox

If FFG sells a pack like this to "standard price for ship" would be 75$ approx.

I wouldn't mind a sort of Duel Decks mentality though. Not the ultra competitive lists, but rather two lists designed and balanced to battle against each other while showcasing an upgrade or expansion.

The amount of money they would have to charge would be too much for casual players I think. As others have mentioned, you're looking at over $150 for most of the boxes, just going by the previous years winners.

More likely, what we will see is either a movie tie-in box (TFA core set) or something similar to Most Wanted/Heroes of the Resistance. What this means would be this-

Movie Tie-in set

Example: Rogue One core set

Contents" Standard core set contents (dice, rulebook(s), templates) plus 3 ships (in this case 2x TIE Strikers, 1 U-Wing)

Price: $49.99

Heroes of the ______ set

Example: Heroes/Villians/Scoundrels of Rogue One set

Contents-

Heroes could have 2x U-Wings or 1 U-Wing/1 repainted ship, comes with updates (new Pilots/mods/titles) for ships that won't see a Veterans treatment (Y-wings, z95s, YT-2400).

Villains could have 2x TIE Strikers + 1 other new/repainted ship, comes with updates (TIE Phantom, Lambda, Firespray).

Scoundrels could have 2x new ships (1 Large, 1 small?), comes with updates (Y-wing, z95, Firespray), possible new dials for Scum YTs.

Price: $29.99-39.99 (depending on ships/upgrades)

This would allow FFG to both promote each new movie with either a separate core set or, better, promote the new content while giving older content a new pass. I prefer the second option, personally. You get the same sort of value for the consumer without having single-faction players forced to pay for content they don't want. FFG profits because the competitive players will want all the updates/new content and casuals will want the ships they just saw in the new movie. FFG can also do yearly balance updates without having to card-only expansion (which they've stated they really don't want to do) or set up another factory line for repainted models, saving them money.

More likely, what we will see is either a movie tie-in box...

A new core box per movie? How many range rulers do you need? How many ship id tokens do you need? How many Proton Torpedo cards? How much of the repeated cardboard goes straight to the bin for anyone who already has a couple core sets from previous iterations/movies?

And assuming " FFG can also do yearly balance updates " means rulebook updates, then now this is a mandatory purchase for anyone playing competitively where MOST of the product is useless repeated material. One box every few years seems pretty reasonable, and even that caused a ruckus. One box a year will cause such anguish and gnashing of teeth...

Even the Duel Deck idea... you're still looking at four to six ships in one package, right? Most of which will be duplicates and repeats for many people. Core sets are $40 (retail) and only have three ships. Sure, you would eliminate a bunch of cardboard in a Duel Box, but you're still looking at at least double an Aces/Veterans/Heroes style box (each approx $30, retail).

Essentially, this appeals most to people with small collections while simultaneously being prohibitively expensive for people who aren't serious collectors.

I just don't think there's a real market for this.

I would disagree in the sense that with each movie there will be a wave of new interest in this game and having a package with the right models and pilot cards would draw people in. People like myself and Joe Boss would no doubt just buy them because they're there and, to your point, I need no more cardboard of any sort and have more cards than I care to count but the models and the missions contained make it worthwhile (to me).

Plus, as much ire as this draws to admit on this forum, I'd likely be buying from Amazon or CSI or MM for way, way less than retail and at that point, it's arguably the cheapest way to get the models ;)

I think you misunderstood a couple of my points.

First, I said that I would prefer the "Heroes" style expansion, as I don't need/want another core expansion myself, for all the points you listed. It was just laid out as an option that FFG can pursue, not the best nor worst idea there is, just an option. I think a new core set per movie would be something that might be too much, there most likely won't be a new run of players coming in just because of the movie.

2nd, the yearly updates was in reference to Heroes boxes, updates that give older ships new pilots/upgrades in response to a constantly evolving meta, not an over-arcing update to the whole game. I view it as an option to do something similar to Aces/Vets but also along the lines of Most Wanted- updates to a few ships that aren't in the boxed set but also don't have enough problems/demand for a full Aces/Vets treatment.

I dunno... it might work:

Rogue One: 1 (black/grey) X-wing, 2 TIE Strikers

SW:Rebels: 1 Protectorate, 2 Auzituck

Episode 8: 1 T-85, 2 New TIE variants

Solo: 1 of whatever fighter (not the Falcon), 2 cool Scum ships

Episode 9: (Hopefully)1 bad*ss new fighter, 2 of some boring TIE variant

Clone Wars: 1 Jedi Starfighter, 2 Droid Fighters

....maybe not.

I could see movie based core set releases being a thing... Maybe not for every movie (some aren't going to draw new audiences like others are), but certainly for the "big films".

As to the worlds lists being available as a pack? Not great market strategy imo, so probably no.

The main problem with such an idea is that it kind of flies in the face of the way the existing ship packs work.

Want to play a crackswarm? The price for doing that is buying a bunch of khirax's you're not going to use in order to get the crack shots.

Playing palp aces? Better buy yourself a raider so you can have a palpatine.

If you start putting top lists in box sets then you either have to make them way more expensive than the ships they contain should justify, or you'll take a revenue hit on all the incidental ships that contain the upgrade cards needed to make the list work.

It's just not good business.

The could take a leaf out of the olden days of mtg I guess... You used to be able to buy world championship decks from WoTC, but they had gold borders and a different card back; and they weren't tournament legal.

You think there are going to be big and small Star Wars movies? Interesting concept!

DAT...

What about 6 Jump masters?

NAH...

Relatively speaking, yes:

I think things like rogue 1 and the Han solo movie, whilst still excellent films you understand, won't draw people in quite the same way that the main trilogy will.

I have nothing against these films; I think they'll be awesome... But I don't think they'll have quite the same draw.

The 2016 worlds boxes would be palp aces vs three jump masters.

Or maybe it will be some out of left field rebels list, because the rebellion has to win every worlds.
