How useful is an Ion Cannon B-Wing in Epic?

I'm thinking of fielding two Ion Cannon blue Squadron B-Wings with accuracy correctors for an epic game, how viable are they in an anti-huge role?

And is the Ion Cannon just dead weight the rest of the time?

I would be surprised if anyone has enough experience to tell you one way or the other. I've seen 4 games of epic played. I played 2 of them.

I will point out that if you're going to use Ion to cripple the big ships, you'll probably hit anyhow without an accuracy corrector. Focus or TL can get you a hit regular enough. If whoever you play against constantly uses the reinforce action, then I guess accuracy corrector could be warranted.

Of course B-Wings could also just take plasma/proton torpedoes and guidance chips. No need to drain the power tokens if you can just kill it. Just remember: plasma then proton.

On the other hand, an Ion cannon is never dead weight, unless your opponent just loves to line up great shots for you.

It depends somewhat on the ship you are facing. A Raider tooled out with secondary weapons and Optimized Generators is going to suffer a big reduction in firepower if hit by massed ion cannons. A Corvette with Ordnance Tubes is not going to be bothered so much.

Personally I wouldn't dedicate Ion power to Epic ship hunting. The bonus of Ion hits removing energy tokens is nice but balanced against that is the fact that most Ion weapons are capped at 1 point of damage (honourable exception of Ion Torpedo). Real damage is generally more useful. Against a shielded ship, it loses a shield whereas an ion token will stop it regaining one. Once you get down to the Hull, it is normally better to pile on the damage as fast as you can, especially if your opponent Reinforces.

I have found massed B-wings good capital ship killers in Epic as they are. Give them FCS, plasma torpedoes and EMs for only a few points more than the Ion Cannon and they will rip shields off a Capital ship in no time and still have free target locks for their primary weapons by the time you get down to the hull.

Thanks
