The initial press release infers that you don't need the conversion kit to use the MoM app with 1st edition. But what exactly are you missing out on without the conversion kit? Would love to see some specifics
Conversion Kit Questions
I'm pretty sure you have to use the 2nd edition if you want to use the App (the 1st edition is not compatible with it). And the 2nd edition is NOT playable without the App. The Conversion Kit seems to just add investigators and monsters from the first edition to the second (similar to how Descent did it a few years ago).

That's my reading of the preview too
And it looks like we'll get some new miniatures as well:
Alas... my reading comprehension skills are not what they used to be. Sister Mary Susan would smack my knuckles with a ruler... if the old battle axe were still around. Reading the preview again, I see that you guys are right... gonna have to pony up another $100. Gotta get the conversion kit too to bring some content over.
On the bright side, the concept and execution of Descent's companion app was genius. Imagine a game built from the bottom up to work in perfect synergy with such an app? Can't wait!!
This will blow the descent app away.
In descent hunting for map puzzle pieces mid-game is a pain, the MoM tiles are much easier to find and add. The puzzles from 1st edition were limited by physical components and required timing to keep the game moving, replacing these with mini games will make the puzzles so much better.
Take my money.. PLEASE

Organization, dude , organization. Its the only thing you need
.
I am curious to see what they will bring on. Opens more and more possibilities for both games in the future. They have a fantastic tool in hands.
I also have a question... It looks like the conversion kit for investigators is a MoM SE-specific stat update (new investigator cards/items), but do the monster token inserts also change? I ask because I painted and glued my monsters to their base... and my monster token inserts were a PAIN to get in (and that's before my minis were glued in, so the glue is not a factor), it was so snug. I thought that was normal 'cause I never understood why you might want to take them out. But if I have to swap out the tokens to work with the Conversion Kit, I'm REALLY out of luck 'cause those tokens are NOT coming out. Ever. I'm sure glue leaked down through the mini's slot to permanently affix the token in the base. ಠ_ಠ
I'd ask FF about getting new bases, but my minis (fully painted and sealed) are already glued in anyway, so that's not really a possibility for me anyway. =(
As someone who's considered this game but never took the plunge, and never got into Descent... Is a FFG conversion kit something you buy solely for completionists sake, or do they add substantial content to the games?
It's probably too soon to have a definitive answer, and asking again after release is likely the best course of action.

I have to agree with Mr. Cheese. Digging for tiles is a pain. But if MoM had as many expansions, it would be the same story. I have all of the expansions and plugged them all into the app. After 2 games, I took all but the core set and my absolute favorite mini expansions without the tiles out. It's plenty of fun with just the core game and a few extras. But yes, it will be very cool to see what they do with the mini games and some new ideas.
@kraisto, I agree. Both are great apps. I'll be honest though, I see a time eventually where they sell a version that you can play entirely digitally. The concept and execution are too good not to. Yes, people will cry sacrilege to physical games. But they could offer digital codes inside the physical package to download digital expansions to your digital game that complement your physical game. It's going to happen. It happened with DVD and Blu-ray rays and even comics.
At the end of the day, digital versions of physical games are getting very, elegant and very entertaining. They are not shovelware. Look at Pathfinder ACG. Aside from a few bugs in the beginning, it is a phenomenal app and even improves on the presentation of the physical game. And people are buying the digital content all over again (myself included). Look at the Descent app. The execution and delivery too are phenomenal. You know they are just a few mechanics short of a full blown stand-alone game. With implementation of some download code purchase verification, we could be playing physical and digital versions of these incredibly entertaining games whenever and wherever we want.
Yep, maybe at some point in the future. But this format has a big potential to impact physical product sales. The Descent sales skyrocketed at a point that they make the first app campaign free. And the appeal can be very strong for FFG businesses, selling more digital and physical content, bring cool features / updates and keeping the board gaming feel, with the best of both worlds.
I am very curious to see if they will maintain the old version alive or at some point they will remake all the old content. Probably a entire new approach here.
The FAQ states that the conversion kit is part of MoM second edition. It's not a separate purchase by the looks of it.
Are the scenarios in the first edition (and expansions) available in the 2nd edition App? Or does the App just generate random maps, encounters and mission goals? I'd really love to play the scenarios from Forbidden Alchemy in the 2nd edition - although I realize then that people might just download the app and only play an augmented 1st edition.
It doesn't look like the 1E investigations will be in the app. The app randomizes the layouts and includes a "fog of war" feature on areas until you explore them, so the 1E stories are fundamentally incompatible as is.

That will be awesome if the conversion kit is included in the 2nd edition box.

Check the component list, the conversion kit is there.
