I tought that in this forum I could find the answer for my question about the cards. So is this game playable without the cards?

I was thinking about buying this rule set from drivethruRPG.com in pdf and thats why I am asking this. Also most of my playing crew likes more the simple pnp style of gaming so without the cards this would be closer to the pnp style.

The simple answer is no, you will not be able to play with just the pdf books. Most of the rules are on the cards so you would at least need to own the cards to reference the rules. It's possible to play without USING the cards if you wanted but you need the information on the cards to play.

How much table room is required with all these cards n' counters building up? Looks like a space problem for most 4 player games

if you scoot about a pit for the various example videos of play and folks who have posted pictures of play, I think you will get a feel for how much space is needed.
