New YouTube Channel For Competitive Imperial Assault Skirmish

By RoyalRich, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hi Rich,

These videos are great. As a relative newbie to IA it's nice to see the different approaches you guys take to the missions.

Since you guys aren't doing commentary on the videos, I actually found the one or two where you lost (!) to be more interesting as you did a bit of a wash up at the end. I think it would be useful to get the player's thoughts mid-game too - at the end of every turn you could take turns to step out the room and each player could say a few words to camera about what they aim to do the next turn? If it was only 20 secs each it shouldn't intrude on the game too much. I think it would add a lot for the audience to see what both players are trying to achieve and how it all turns out.

I'm a big fan of the score pad at the top of the video rather than the bottom, as it means I get a closer look at the board and your nice painted minis.

Keep up the good work,

J

Thanks Jono, that's really valuable specific feedback and I'll do my best to work it into the next video and see how it goes.

I've started to do a weekly release schedule now so the videos are upload in advance for a Friday night release, at the moment I've got the next two weeks queued (23rd and 30th) but for the one after that I'll do what I can to put some of this in place, great ideas!

I'm also trying to get some more Tactics videos up so hopefully they'll be of use to you, my idea is to do one for each of the missions taking about strategy, and then continue my command card articles, as well as one about deployment. I find it difficult to do those as it's awkward talking in front of a camera on my own however I am trying to get them up!

Sorry guys I've missed loads of these off, I'll add the last couple but it's probably easier to subscribe to the channel if you're interested as I don't always update here :)

Another great video. Was a bit of a shock at first to see non-rebel lists.

Keep up the great work, man!

haha yea we've been on rebels for a while since burning out playing imperials in the run up to Nationals last year. I'm moving onto Scum now though I think and there's all sorts amongst the group now Jabba is out so hopefully some more variation :)

Another video from last night, We played 3 games and filmed the first two so there'll be another one on the same map up on Friday

Great videos. As an utter n00b to the game I'm learning a lot from them.

I really do enjoy these. (I've subscribed!)

I find your in game rules explanations to be clear and concise. Great job on sticking to the steps of attack and defense, as well as end/start of round, I know a lot of people who skip through those.

Games 27 and 28. Difficult to rate your teams because you are simply outrolling your opponent by a significant margin. :)

I would say this for my own viewing. When you include the dice tray near the camera, the board is relegated to a quarter of the screen size. I mostly watch these videos on my phone, so while I could see your rolls, I couldn't clearly see the game board. Maybe switch the board to the front? Or roll anywhere and try to remember to place the rolled dice in the middle after you roll?

Those suggestions are only to make my viewing easier though.

Gamorreans!

Thanks R5D8, that certainly seems to be the majority view so I'll try and go back to doing that for a few videos and see how it goes. I might go so far as to add a small marked area on the map where we can place the dice once rolled!

Yea I'm liking the pigs a lot, need to play some different match-ups though to ensure they're not just great vs troopers

The guy you are playing against in this last video, is that the same guy as usual? He doesn't seem to know the game very well..

Are you guys just playing with your stuff?

I really enjoy the videos, you guys do a nice job. I was thinking of looking at pantheon to support you.

One minor issue is there is some language I wish you would edit out. I'm not personally offended, but I can't recommend your videos to younger players, because of the cursing. I wouldn't want their mum up my bum.

Also, I think there are parental ratings and settings on YouTube, which could hinder your efforts.

I agree about the dice tray, put it in the background by the scoreboard, if you want to highlight dice rolls, just bring the dice to the foreground. This should help to make the battle map and figures more prevalent. I do rather enjoy the talking through you do with strategies surrounding the dice mechanics, it's an important element and it brings great depth into the games.

Well, keep cracking on, you have the best videos I've seen by far, including the FFG ones, because I still am not sure what those announcers were talking about...chess or something.

Which video mate?

Matt and Andy are both quite new to the game (Matt = Heavy SnowStorm list and Andy = Blaise Train) so make some silly mistakes at times.

RE: Playing with my stuff, Matt is using my stuff yes if that's what you mean? I own multiples of most things so he has been using my stuff while he decides if the game is for him. Everyone else who's been on uses their own stuff though.

In terms of "same guy as usual" my most common opponents (for filming) are probably Andy and Chris, however I've also had 2-3 others on so hopefully not seeing the same person too often (except me, as I'm normally in them)

Thanks Daner, yea I've considered going through and removing the language (I don't tend to use a lot myself as my dad's been a vicar/priest for 35 years!) however to be perfectly honest I don't watch the video's before posting currently to edit them in that detail so it would be a significant piece of work.

I will perhaps try and be more mindful however and ask the participants to mind their language whilst being filmed.

Ya makes sense if they are new, you are clearly a much better player which is not an insult to them just stating the truth. These videos are fun to watch and I appreciate you making them, but I would love to see more where you go up against equally skilled opponents :) I guess you guys just need to keep playing!!

This is a good idea to be able to get better zoom while still allowing for the dice to be rolled/moved over to the center of the board easily after the results

If it's doable from your end, I think the perfect solution would be to put the main camera on the board, as suggested above, and then have a second camera on just the dice tray so you can put it in it's own box out of the way when you go back to edit.

Of course, a second camera might not be an option, so maybe just have it behind the board and later edit to zoom it somehow? Just throwing out ideas!

Yea I get that mate. I try to get Dave and Craig on semi regularly and both of those also made top 8 at the UK Nationals and our local regionals (Approx 40 players at each) so are pretty decent.

I think Matt and Andy have potential but probably aren't quite there yet. Chris came 16th I think at UK Nationals so above average probably. :)

I'll have a think about this, I do have my mobile phone which I could probably use to record, but I'd need a second tripod of some sort to hold it (presume you can get Tripod's that'll hold a phone)

I don't want to add a lot of post production but I could probably add the second video no problem, will it not still take up the screen though but just as an overlay?

New video up last night:

One small misplay, the jabba should've been stunned from to the limit

ah yea my bad, thanks. It doesn't really make much difference with Jabba (there's no downside really) so I completely missed it, but you are entirely right

The angle is a lot better for the map action without the dice tray in the foreground.

I do like the strategy and explanations of the dice rolls

Double Post

Latest video is up, have removed the dice tray and tried to get as close as possible.

Thoughts on this view, any better?

Yes it's awesome! Great job and we can see the dice afterwards too
