New YouTube Channel For Competitive Imperial Assault Skirmish

By RoyalRich, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hi guys,

Just a quick post to pop up some info about a new YouTube channel I've created - Star Wars Streaming. (Also on Twitter @Starwars_Stream)

I've been getting frustrated at how difficult it is to find online battle reports of Skirmish games and although there is some great content out there in the form of podcasts by Vader's Finest, The IA Team, Mandalorian Tactics, BoardWars, etc. there's very little in terms of actual games recorded online. (Recent Regionals at Kirton Games beng notable exception)

I'm very much a beginner to all this so the video's will be very rough and unrefined at first but I'm hoping people will be able to provide feedback which I can use to improve.

Anyway, the first video is here, if you're able to give it a watch and provide any feedback that'd be awesome, I'm looking to get the second report up today as well and then we're hoping to film again at the local club on Wednesday.

A few questions for anyone with the time/inclination to provide some feedback:

  • Is it worth us talking about the mission before hand or should we assume that people know the mission and rules?

  • Should I talk about the lists or is popping them up in the comments sufficient?

  • Should I include Command Cards as part of those posted lists or keep those private?

  • Anybody have any idea how to make a short intro video for the channel and can point me in the right direction?

Thanks for reading/watching guys,

Rich

Hi Rich,

I think you did a nice job with your video.

I could hear the players clearly (big plus compared with other videos)

You work through the activations clearly and it is easy to understand game effects and decisions being made.

I Rcommendmaking a title screen that shows force list and command cards. A brief description of the mission at the start would be a good idea, too.

I feel your video is an excellent way for (new)players to understand the game.

Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Greg

Thanks Greg, that's great specific feedback, someone on facebook mentioned about using After Effects to create an intro so it's certainly something I'll be looking at.

I'm hoping to film again Wednesday so I'll try and integrate some of the feedback into those games and hopefully the quality will progress as we get more experienced with it.

Rich

*edit* Second video up, just the gameplay for this one it was the second game from yesterday

Great job! A quick question about General Sorins abilty? I thought the droids needed to be adjacent to the General but you were using three spaces? Am I missing something?

Probably using the new Advanced Com Systems, which allows an attached leader to use printed abilities that are normally within 2 to be 3. Therefore Sorin's abilities (which are typically within 1) are now within 3.

Yea exactly this thanks tropo, sorin has advanced comms, I think it might actually make him viable if not particularly competitive. The droids being able to focus for a 4 dice attack is great for 3 points and the option to stun as well. Going to try it again Wednesday although my head says i should just stick with troopers and ISBs

Awesome card! Again great video.

Completely DerBaer, that's a great thread and you'll see I've contributed there myself. There are a number of videos out there however they're limited so I was hoping to add to them. Also a lot of them are time sensitive if people are looking for list ideas etc. so become less useful as time goes on, from what I can see my two video's are the only two wave 7 battle reports there are on YouTube atm.

I appreciate what you're doing with those DerBaer and I'm certainly not trying to tread on anybody's toes, but there are very few available and I'm trying to build upon those. It's for people like me who can't get enough of the game and want to watch more than there is available atm.

I'm hoping to be able to post 2-3 games a week up on YouTube.

If you could link to the channel from your thread that'd be cool though DerBaer

Awesome card! Again great video.

Yea I'm liking it, needs some more play to check if it's viable but I think it "could" be. Going to bring it out again on Wednesday for a couple of games (mostly painted by then I think) and will try and film at least one of them.

Thanks for the feedback

Rich

you cannot choose to not use blast from sorin so except if you target the backspace of the nexu your adjacent figure will suffer damage

ahh thanks Xarathornx, I didn't realise that. I'll need to be careful with placement then!

However, on several occasions in the first video you guys seem to have gotten carried away a bit and used the Sorin focus outside of the three space aura. I think you were also re-rolling rProbes, who don't get Targeting Computer. You might want to take things a bit more slowly and double check in the future :-)

The actual video was very nicely done and the sound was great. Activations were a bit hard to follow, so if you have the option of doing a bit of a wider shot to include deployment cards, that'd be neat. Then again, with lists other than six Probes that would be less of an issue. A way to track or show VPs throughout the match would also be nice, either add them in post or just place two large d10s per player in the shot and spin them around. And speaking of dice, you might consider getting a small dice box or dice tray to avoid having the little buggers bounce out of frame.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks for the feedback Don_Silvarro

You're right I think I spotted the fact that they don't get re-rolls about halfway through, no idea how many times I'd re-rolled them incorrectly! First time playing with the regulars so will remember in future. I didn't notice using it from outside 3 spaces so I'll definitely need to watch out for that, did anyone have any thoughts as to whether it counts across impassable terrain (either red solid lines or dashed)

Thanks we were chuffed with the sound quality, it's an old camera I think (It's Dave's Camera) but I think it was a good quality one so we'll see what the quality is like from webcam and if it doesn't come out as well we might need to stick to the camera.

I'll try and get the deployment cards in view next time, I think we were worried it'd be an issue with people not able to see what was going on with the map but it seems to have come out clear so we'll give it a go. I've downloaded "Simple Points Tracker" which seems like it'd be a handy way to show the scores and should be view-able on the screen, whilst a dice tray is on route (really excited about this one)

Thanks again for the feedback, I really want to make this as good as it can be so will take all that on board and hopefully improve each time.

Next video after Wednesday night, if anyone wants input on the list I'll be using I've put a vote up on twitter on @@StarWars_Stream (Undecided atm between Sorin list or a variation of the ISB/Troopers list I'm more comfortable with)

You can count spaces for purposes of ability range through impassable terrain, no problemo. The thing you can't do is count spaces through walls and closed doors.

Blocked terrain is a bit tricky. If the entire square is blocked terrain, you flat out can't count that. However, if a single side of a space is blocked, you can't count that orthogonally through the blocked side, but you can still count that diagonally (unless the second edge of the space you'd like to count through diagonally is also blocked or a wall) as you would do with movement.

Other way to think about is: when counting spaces for abilities, you ignore impassible terrain, difficult terrain and enemy figures, but other than that you count exactly like you would count movement.

Edited by Don_Silvarro

Yup. Impassable terrain and impassable terrain edges just prevent figures (not objects!) from moving (or be pushed) through, it does not block Counting Spaces nor line of sight. (See RRG.)

And correct, a corner where any combinations of wall, door, or blocking terrain or blocking terrain edge meet is obstructed.

There are good examples in the RRG.

Thanks guys, I thought that was right but didn't want to bog down the game or play the rule in my favour so because I wasn't 100% I played it in my opponents favour.

Ta for the clarification

I don't add channels, but I will add the videos.

No problem at all, thank you

I would like to see the Droid army clash with a Trooper list and with Beastmachines.

Edited by DerBaer

I'll do my best tonight DerBaer, I'm going to play the droid list and will probably play either against Dave again with a Trooper list, or against a friend with Weiss and Troopers. Not sure what else is there.

It may be there's a beast machine player there in which case I'll try to get a game in.

Also thinking of a slight variation of the list with 2 HK's and 2 eProbes with 1 officer instead of the 4 rProbes / 2 eProbes and 3 officers, it's possible I'll try the HK's tonight but I prefer the 4 rProbe list I think and it's mostly painted now.

Hope to have the video's uploaded at some point tomorrow

I like the Probes, because they are a lot of activations and habe a lot of health together with recover. Additionally, on those 2 yellow dice there are a lot more surges.

Yea the yellow dice was the main draw for me given I'm trying to take advantage of Sorin's surges they do so better than the HK's. Also have the option to blow up when low on health which is a nice thing to have

If you want to add HKs, maybe it's:

4 Probes

2 eProbes

Sorin with Advanced Com

HKs with Alliance

I would normally not like that list for the lack of Officers, but it's got 8 activations and a whole lot of kick-ass-potential.

Yea I definitely want to try that variation DerBaer. At the moment I'm going to stick with this list until next week as I'll be 4 games in by then and probably able to make some informed decisions.

What started off as a bit of a gimicky list is something I'm seriously considering taking to Nationals now though....

Anyway, another 2 video's last night with my new camera, these were taken at my local club so there's a lot more background noise I'm afraid and my camera probably isn't as good as Dave's older, but much higher spec, camera.

We tried to take into account all the feedback that had been given here, through facebook, and on twitter, so hopefully the deployment cards are visible, as well as using an app to track the score so that people can keep up easier, and talking through our lists beforehand. We also have a brief discussion about how the droid list is faring at the end of my game (Match 4)

Next video's should be up Sunday as we're filming again on Saturday night, hoping to get 2 camera's setup at my place so that we can film 4 games and put them on the channel.

Any further recommendations much appreciated, next steps are trying to sort out a little intro splash screen rather than going straight into the video, as well as figuring out where/how to incorporate a dice tray in the video's.
