Vader's soft carress...

By MoffZen, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hey boys !

Just wanna try a new list and I could use your advice on it :D Maybe a little light on activations, but I wanted larger dice pools !

Imperial-I SD :

- Vader

- Devastator

- Heavy Turbos

- Phylon Q7

Victory-I SD

- Dominator

- Intel Officer

Gladiator-I SD

- Intel Officer

- Expanded Launchers

3 x TIE Fighters

"Mauler" Mithel

Total : 375 points

Objectives :

- Advanced Gunnery

- Hyperspace Assault

- Minefields

Trying out a new very high initiative bid, the idea is to pound the enemy into submission with large attack pools :D

I sense issues with this. It can work great but I suggest testing and tweaking.

It is indeed a test !

What kind of issues are you concerned with ?

Maneuvering is going to be key due to low activations, thankfully I've designed a predictive model that allows me to catch any Rebel ship in the front arc :D To be tested on the battlefield obviously !

I was also thinking of removing the HTT on the ship and rather put in some Wing Commander to free myself of the squadron planning. My goal is going to have the Brace blow up with the Intel Officer so it may not synergize well.

Yeah, dump the HTT, they're trash, especially on Devastator where they anti-synergize with all those blue accuracies. Good alternatives might be SW-7, Nav Officer/Wulff, XI7, Demolisher, Gunnery Teams, or boosted comms.

You might find the VSD holding you back maneuver-wise, particularly given your low deployment count. Do you have a plan to mitigate that?

Loving the list though. I still feel like Vader should work, I just can't bring myself to come to the Dark Side to try him out...

Hehe well I don't mind the HTTs on Carrier like builds with Bombers that drill the Shields ! They are statistically better than XI7 on unshielded hull zones.
On Avenger following a Bomber run they do quite well je cause the opponent is unlikely to spend tokens against the Bombers

Good point with the VSD. The idea is to boldly deploy Vader and the Fighters to incentivize a counter deployment then put the VSD, then put the Gladiator. So, being the fourth deployment (after the 4 fighters), I will likely put It in a place with available targets.

The idea is also to spend Nav dials early for good control of the position early on

What bombers?

Not in this list. I said that the HTTs aren't bad, and they work especially well in a Bombers list. But considering I don't have Bombers, I'm going to replace them for a Wing Commander most likely to try out and give some flexibility ! :D

Wanted to add something about Vader : I think he can work best in a first player scenario, much like Screed. I don't really see what he brings defensively in a second player scenario, compared to Motti (more hull) and Tarkin (more flexibility).

I still think that 3 activations is a tad on the low side, but I want to test how first player affects this. I'm pretty sure this list would be better off without the Victory and with something like another Glad and a Raider.

Oh sorry, I meant the fighters !

My thoughts:

If you're investing in tractor beams you want to bring at least 2.

I would include at least one long-medium range ship, as with 3 activations it'll be easy for opponent to stay out of close range.

Dominator is actually pretty good at long range too: 3r/2bu at long is nothing to sneeze at. Scratch that, "close-medium range". I keep wanting this title to be worth taking, but it's just not good... :(

They hit all the issues I was thinking.

Alright, so came back from the first game with this list ! Absolutely insane, with so far my best Imperial win with a 9-2 (according to the new tourney rules) with a MOV of 224 points. No ship lost, and only 2 TIEs down.

My opponent was a primarily Imperial player flying a Rebel list he was not really used to fly (he's quite new in our gaming group, but he's a fast learner and I'm curious to see how far he goes ! :D ), so this skewed a bit more towards the high end of the MOV, but I feel that this list is 7-4 capable in tourney settings.

A few key takeaways :

1) Dominator with Vader is absolutely insane in dueling with the initiative. Even at medium range, it's capable of throwing 5 then 4 dice on a double arc at the cost of 4 shields which is not too bad considering you'll push as much on the enemy's own shields. With an Engineering Command, you actually trade 4 shields for 2 of yours, and then you bank on hull tanking. Absolutely amazing title for a Victory imho !

2) Devastator with Vader is absolutely insane too. One shotted a Neb B with only a single extra dice on the front arc, shooting at the Neb's own front arc with full shields and getting double accuracies thanks to Vader's reroll. This baby could tank jousting with 2 Slaved Turrets Neb Bs pumping out Concentrate Fire Commands and is quite amazing. First time I think an ISD survived in one of my game, albeit with no shields and 3 hull. Starting to love these big buggers :D

3) Even without the Demolisher title, the Gladiator I worked quite well. It spent 2 turns scaring away a flanking CR90 and ate a Neb in its activation.

4) Can't really comment on Mauler's performance due to him only having Han Solo as a Fighter escort, but this fighter screen does work quite well.

5) It was a pleasure to see another player field pairs of Nebs ! I feel a lot less alone than I used to :D

Psychologically, the large dice pools actually scared him against ganging up too much (he'll learn how to survive against these larger attacks). It was a very fun list to play overall, really changed how I looked at the ISD in terms of performance, and the VSD still ain't dead ! :D
