Tournament in 9 hours, any advice?

Going to a tournament at The Gaming Guild in Evansville, IN. Any last minute advice? This will be my first tournament, so I expect to lose, yet hope to win. I know to bring fluids, have fun, and be ready for a sound butt-whoop'n'.

Shower before hand, bring a snack that doesn't get your hands sticky/dirty, get a good nights sleep before hand.

Thank you!

with 9 hours before the turnament, he's cutting that last point pretty short. Especially if he's also hitting the first point.

Sit when you can, if you have to go to the bathroom during a match, do it during planning and check with your opponent first.

Take your time. Don't feel rushed. Make a point of looking over all your upgrades at least a couple times each match. You don't want to realize after the match that you forgot crack shot on a decisive shot.

Go. To. Sleep.

Always remember your actions and triggers. Pay keen attention to your opponents and their actions and triggers. Never be afraid to call for a judge for any reason. Always give your foe the benefit of the doubt. Never cheat or be a poor sport. Win with grace and lose with a laugh. Always have fun.

Now go to freakin' sleep!

3 easy things I do with great R.O.I, enjoy your tourney !!

smile! is contagious and tend to disarm WAAC. if u can smile even if rolling bad grace awaits 4 u => both of you should have fun, set the tone of the match from the start

offer and ask for help in moving ships and tokens => less possible mistakes/errors by clumsy/nervous fat fingers

congratulate any fancy flying by your opponent => you may lose a match yet win a friend with whom to play, it's all about the community

Win, losing will not bring victory.

Roll lots of booms and kabooms.

Oh hey! I was going to go but I instead am carpooling with my buddies to another tournament.

The first thing you'll know about the tournament is that it's "Reverse" Hanger Bay, aka Pick Your Poison. You'll need to bring two 100 pt lists, each from a different faction.

You'll want to bring two lists that cover each other's weakness. Say you have a Rebel list that struggles against Palp Aces. In that case, perhaps your second list is Feedback Array Zs to deal with Palp Aces? You also want them to look near the same level of power, so your opponents will not choose just one list every game.

My advice (always works best):

Train weeks with your squad list --> continue trying out some maneuvers until last minute --> panic --> change your squad and take something completely different --> loose

--> repeat...

Shower is the number one rule. Sad that it is so, but....

Take advantage of the rounds being timed. By this I mean if your match ends early, go to the bathroom and then look at some of the other matches to get a feel for the players/lists.

Have fun.

Try to win, and avoid losing.

Shower...

Deodorant...

Snacks...

Drinks (especially Guiness... or water)...

X-wing Minis...

Play well...

Don't be a di@k...

Have fun!

The last one is most important.

Make sure to break the ice by asking if proxies are allowed. Offer to call a TO over to really make sure

I'm obviously late to this party but for future reference add my voice to the 'shower' chorus.

Nothing smells as bad as lots of unwashed nerds in an enclosed space.

You're there to win.

If you tell everyone how new you are, they'll let you perform missed triggers and even cheat and take things back.

When it's opportune, stab them in the back and deny them their missed triggers.

Thanks all! I fell asleep around 1:30 last night so didn't see most of this stuff, and got a shower this morning, but I'll keep this topic on hand until I participate in another tournament. I came in last, but it was a small, very relaxed tournament, five people showed up so the TO played as well. I got three alternate art VIs, four acrylic ion tokens, and the TO gave me a couple Guidance Chimps, he had more than he would ever use. I also bought the X-wing expansion pack. The first two matches I played I lost extremely badly, but the last one was close until two or three rounds from the end, I lost. Next time, I go for the jugular!

Thanks for the follow-up report!

My first tournament, I played three of the four rounds (got a bye in the third round). I didn't win any of my games. But I still had fun, and I came back for more.

Sounds like you're doing the same. Good on ya!

I wasn't there to win, next time I will be! Stabbing people in the back makes people not like you, I like being liked.

Don't worry about PGS, he's the forums resident bellwhacker. Actively revels in telling tales of times when he gets to be an absolute jeb-end to his opponents.

Honestly don't know how he gets games if indeed he behaves as he claims, but hey-ho, not my problem.

People cant avoid playing him in tournaments.

I have one person in the group of people (of about 50ish people) that I will absolutely never play against, unless it is in a tournament where I cant avoid it.

The worst thing you can do on a tournament is to change your plan.

I did it on Regionals and after a tournament, I found out that I have dropped formation too early in most of the matches I lost and that led to my utter destruction. Don't know if I would do better but I won almost every match in my practice sessions.
