What excites you about wave 9?

By Chief Hugh, in X-Wing

(thank goodness the Fang doesn't include any "must have" cards for other factions).

I mean, it doesn't bother me, because I play Scum, but if I didn't, I wouldn't feel a shred of concern at ignoring the Fang, even if it is pretty.

(thank goodness the Fang doesn't include any "must have" cards for other factions).

This in particular I think is a bit of a misstep. It's very rare (indeed, unprecedented I think?) for FFG to not include a single upgrade that is not faction specific in a set.
;)

Wave 8 showed that FFG were starting to make expansions more self-contained. Ghost and Tie/Fo in particular stand out as being very self-contained. That is not to say you wouldn't want to experiment with other upgrades on your Ghost or that the cards from the Tie/Fo aren't useful elsewhere. But overall I think it is a positive development to make both individual releases and factions overall a bit more self-contained.

While this may result in slightly lower sales for some expansions, hopefully FFG realise that it is in their long-term interests to do this and keep the player base happy. I would much rather buy a ship because it is a good ship than buy a mediocre ship just to get a killer card.

It's a misstep for FFG's marketing, because they usually try to make everyone buy every expansion, and including something which has literally nothign that is useful outside of the faction seems unusual.

It's not a misstep from the player's perspective at all, indeed, I'm sure it will be welcomed by a lot of people.

Well I was super excited with the tie/sf but I really think that the dial is going to be really limiting. It is a shame as the new fang fighter looks fantastic and the arc is interesting but the tie/sf... I think it is just going to be far too situational and difficult to use for everyday play.

So what gets you over the top excited in wave 9?

NEW TOYS!!!!!!!

My original answer was "not much". I was planning on buying one TIE/sf and that way about it. But, the Protectorate fighter looks pretty cool. Eventually I'm looking at picking up Scum as a second faction and when I do I'll definitely get 2-3 of these.

Seems some folks are finding the Tie/sf esp mediocre after the Fang reveal :P

Not to point fingers back anyone (everyone has their own playstyle) but the Tie/sf really shouldn't be drawing any parallels to the Fang and vice versa (now the interceptor...)

The SF is a completely different ship, one of only two small base aux arcs and one packing perhaps the most playstyle defining pilot ability in QuickDraw who brings both double taps and activation phase shots

Granted, if you're looking for tank ace de jour, you won't find it in the SF (esp not the one that baffles itself to death) but that's why it's a NEW toy

Empires already swimming in arcdodgers and green dice mods, I think we'd be more than well off if we NEVER got another one

I'm fairly new to the game, so new ships will have greater appeal than old ships, and I can always buy the must-have cards separately to keep my collection manageable. I am never going to own all the ships FFG has produced. As you can tell from my signature, I've opted to concentrate on S&V and have mostly the smaller ships, which many believe aren't among the most viable in the X-Wing tournament scene.

So am I excited by Wave 9? You betcha!

Fang raises the ante for S&V small ships, plain and simple. I would love to have three, fly two, use extra cards for other S&V ships.

Shadow Caster would be my second large S&V ship and yes, I have missed out on the fun of JMs and MHs but am resisting them. I bought the Aggressor after reading about the SC so I could share pilots' abilities between the two different ships, a bomber and torp/cannon ship.

TIE /sf looks like a good addition to my Imp Vets investment. I can fly for the Empire without a huge monetary investment, again for casual play and smaller tournaments in my area.

ARC 170 is a very cool X-Wing to my eye, and I like some of its distinctive characteristics. I don't have the Rebel components of my TFA Core set, but I do have a HWK, fwiw. I suppose a Y-Wing would give me Rebel cards for my Most Wanted version. That leads to my final piece of excitement:

HotR set will give me two signature ships from Star Wars and enough ships to play viable Rebel squads.

That's what I told myself when I got into the game....

....but now I'm only a couple Imperial Huge ships short of owning all of them. It's a slippery rabbit hole to fall into. Props to you if you can resist, you are a stronger man (?) than I.

Also gives you enough to play a pure Resistance Squad that doesn't suck. How well do you think a Poe9 Rey list will work?

They're gonna suck :P

Rather, nothing thus far spoiled suggests that that yt1300 or Poe are going to be different in any meaningful way from their previous incarnation

But that's cause we only know a few cards out of the pack (ps 9 Poe, Rey, pattern analyzer putting perform action before check pilot stress of reds, mod that gives yts illicit and, probably, a one shot SLAM illicit for large ships)

I am never going to own all the ships FFG has produced.

That's what I told myself when I got into the game....

Ditto - yet now I have every... single ... one...

They all bide their time in a display cabinet (bought specifically for the collection), except 1... Ghost will never see the outside of its box (the one ship I cannot tolerate - I came around on the Deci and Punisher and even JM5k - Phantom also snuck its way out, but I think the Ghost will be the whipping boy for any qualms I have over other ships).

I was going to draw the line on TFA, but the SF sucked me in, I picked up a superfluous* TFA set in anticipation.

(* = having 2 originals already).

Now I am looking at doubling down on the GR75 and Gozanti on top of the steadily expanding Wave 9 wishlist.

Even more surprising (to myself) is that the faction I probably like the least (Imps) is currently my largest (by a comfortable margin!).

It's a slippery rabbit hole to fall into.

Like a drop-ship plunging towards a planet (or forested moon) full of rebels.

I had to keep looking at the name to be sure I didn't post this. It's like it's your words, but my exact story.

I'd suggest that we all form X-Wingers Anonymous... but realise this forum IS just that, however none of us actually want to quit.

We have 2-Step method:

#1: Buy your first pack

#2: Give in entirely and buy everything else - often multiple times

Some take a bit longer to get from #1 to #2... others of us, much less so! :D

Tilt your head and the shadowcaster is shaped like a pancake with breakfast sausages for engines

The physical resemblance is uncanny

;) Actually it looks more like a Romulan Bird of Prey.

 Come to think about it the Kihraxz Starfighter looks like a Klingon Bird of Prey.

:o OMG Scum & Villainy is actually

:P

My first thought on seeing the Kihraxz was that someone spilled coffee on their E-Wing.

Really hoping the Shadowcaster introduces a good mechanic for the debris-dropping - I'm more interested in that than the mobile-arc - hoping it may be possible to drop multiple objects during a game such as [maybe] the container tokens from earlier expansions, without having to silly-house-rule it...

...and as for the rest, will probably be at least 2 of each, maybe 4 Fangs...already got a diecast ARC that I may proxy in for #3, and I don't play Imps much so more SF's unlikely...

...but at least 2 Shadowcasters, as I always seem to get at least that of each large-base, just to do alternate paint-jobs

I think the debris drop is going to be exactly the same as dropping a Prox/Cluster/Connor Net. You move, spend and action to drop the unique Debris Field.

Once in play, it remains unless destroyed (Seismic Torp is rumoured to do this). Untill then, it functions like a normal debris field and just generally gunks up the works.

However I am very excited for the Shadow Caster. Being able to point and assign Tractor Tokens to aces and then apply additional tractor tokens without sacrificing your attack is going to push imperials out of the lime light I reckon. I mean, Soontir is Soontir but even he doesn't last long on 1 or 2 agility. It could even be the return of Rebels due to their high health play style.

Erm you know we can already do that right with defenders it's hardly an original thing, scums just getting our sloppy seconds.

Defenders can do that, they have to take the TIE/D title which reduces their defence option and action economy, plus they have to hit with the tractor beam to make it stick. With not a lot of ways to get modifiers on both attacks beyond Vessery and a TIE Shuttle with Fleet Officer, it just isn't as effective.

Ketsu just has to have them in arc to apply the first tractor beam token. Then he fires, if he hits, he applies another one. That seems vastly superior to me, especially since his primary weapon is likely to have two modifiers.

I appreciate this is just speculation though and time on the table will tell of course.

It's called a tie shuttle and it gives defenders plenty of options used right.

Ketsu is better than Tie/D, for the simple fact that her ability may be more situational but it doesn't depend on dice rolls

so she wins automatically

Shadowcaster is...eh imo

I'm really excited about the TIE/SF. I finally got into X Wing when TFA was about to be released, but I want the SF Tie Fighter not because of its appearance in the movie but because I really wanted variety in my Imperial squadron.

I really have felt that up until now the Imperial ships all really just had the same design. You have the basic efficient jousting TIE Fighter. Then you have the expensive slightly tougher but poor attack Advanced. Then you have the very expensive and faster Defenders. Then you have a slightly stronger Fighter that has to avoid getting shot to make up it's higher points in the Interceptor.

The Rebels have Regen, Turrets, et al. I know they aren't efficient in the current tournament meta but i don't enjoy playing in the hyper competitive scene and I'm never going to field Palpatine or the über efficient Soontir or Inquisitor.

The only really unique things the Imperials had going for them was arc dodging and the aux arc on the Firespray. I didn't want Imperials to get a small base turret but I thought that a small base aux arc would be more flexible than the big Firespray.

I'm a bit disappointed that the Rebels get the ARC when they already have multiple turret based ships but we cant get everything.

Then my second thing that I'm really excited about in this wave is the Fang. I haven't had any urge to play scum up until now but I really did like the Mandalorian fighters in The Clone Wars and they looked like a lot of fun to play.

Aye, the Fang looks sooooo daaaamn sexy, I'm tempted to start Scum because of it and the Shadowcaster. Thanks FFG, you just won't be happy until you have all my money, and I'm standing in a soup line.

I sold my Millennium Falcon model but kept the cards, so I'm excited to get Heroes of the Resistance. Also want to get the Fang Fighter.
