seriously FFG?

By Duskwalker, in X-Wing

Anyone else notice this is a card only expansion for a Star Wars FFG miniatures game?

It's $30 for 16 new squadrons and 12 new objectives. I don't think that is quite the value most are wanting.

The objectives also have additional stations and a new type of obstacle...

$30 is cheap for what we're getting, we're not complaining at the price point at all :)

The Armada player's view is a bit different than an X-wing player's obviously. I can guarantee there would be complaints about a similar price point for a handful of new pilots for X-wing. See, Epic ships.

I would agree with that sentiment...

Its almost like they gave us different forums to hang out with, too :D

I think I'm one of the adventurous few who doesn't play X-Wing to come out to this side.

I would VERY happily pay $30 a campaign-based card-only expansion for X-Wing. That's not very comparable to epic ships, if you ask me. Epics are $60-100, so two to three times the cost, and this offers much more than just the 4-10 cards people want from those epics... It's even more welcome when you consider that many of those cards go for $10 piecemeal on eBay...

I would love for this kind of expansion to come to X-Wing.

That's 30$ for 16 new squadrons and 12 new objectives, but more importantly, a whole campaign that will be played out over a couple of months. That's a pretty good value if you ask me and I hope that they will do the same for X-Wing.

Something like this would also help draw in a different crowd. I know 2 of my LFGS that run Heroes of the Aturi Cluster games that have given the old-school pen-and-paper RPGers something more their style to play.

What would be really fun is getting some new pilots for ships that may not deserve/warrant an Aces/Veterans-style fix. Something like a new Rebel HWK pilot, a Scum YT-2400 pilot, or an Imperial Firespray ace. It could open up the game for some more faction-swapping ships or at least give us some new choices.

Shara Bey and Norra Wexley in the right ships would be pretty cool

Well, I don't know about Norra Wexley, but it has been spoiled that in the Corellian Conflict Campaign box, Shara Bey will be the Unique named A-Wing Pilot. Yay for Armada doing things right!

It's been a long time that I've been this excited for a new release... well... maybe when Rebellion was announced... so not that long ago after all...

interesting... Rogue over Escort. If this wasnt unique people would spam it because Rogue is just insanely strong especially for Rebels who dont have very good Squadron command dials. Escort is kinda pointless anyway unless youre trying to sprinkle a few Bwings/Ywings in...and why you'd want them i got no idea lol

That's actually a pretty nice upgrade.

Also promising: FFG is still milking the old material, so there's hope for us yet.

Not like there's much of the new material that's armada scale. The Resistance has yet to field anything larger than a shuttle.

Maybe they'll give the Rebels Venators and Acclamators.

STAR WARS ...

  :P

$30 for a card only expansion?

I paid over $100 to have the Heroes of the Aturi Cluster printed, then I spent two evenings cutting the pieces out with a steel ruler and craft knife.

$30 for a good product is a bargain.

Escort actually works wonderfully when paired with Jan Ors ability: You are forced to attack the escort ship and he can use Jan Brace tokens to survive longer.

But yeah, Rogue Squadron will be part of most of my rebel fleet once the campaign comes out. And you're probably right, seeing that some players already run a couple of YT-2400 because of their Rogue ability, I could see them start to spam Rogue Squadron instead to save some points.

This. And I've yet to get HAC printed. It's honestly been the one barrier to diving into it even though I really, really want to.

If FFG said, "Here's an official HAC box set, that'll be $100," I'd still pay it just to avoid the printing hassle.

Rogue Squadron is Unique. You can't spam it at all.

Gotta be said, Shara Bey in an A-wing would be a near perfect fit for her ability: cheap support platform, and one of the toughest for its price range to boot. Slap on VI and PTL, and she's even a semi-respectable ace as well.

Just a little bit scary to run with homing missile Z-95s, for instance.

I don't really understand why everybody craves a nod to rogue squadron like we don't already have 6 or so rogue pilots

Because it could make the T-65 great again.

Although I am skeptical for a card only expansion for Armada I can see how it can work for that game, but not X-wing. For one it is not the main ships but rather attachments to the main models. However I will say that I am disappointed that Armada has a campaign expansion while X-wing still doesn't have an official Battle of Yavin trench run expansion.

Rogue Squadron is Unique. You can't spam it at all.

I know, you gotta also read the message I was replying to. Vineheart said that if it was not unique, people would start spamming it. I simply agreed with him.

It could work, but I think it would be slightly difficult to make sure that it was something worthwhile for most players. Not everyone would be happy with every card in it. Still, even if you're only a Rebel or Imperial or Scum player, there would be some useful upgrades/pilots in it and you could always find someone to split the cost with.

It could work for X-Wing too, but they went with a different route with Ace pack instead.

Just think about Heroes of the Resistance coming soon. What if instead of a third T-70 figure and a second Falcon, it would come with a campaign (set after the movies in that case) and add some named pilots (with actual name) for the Tie/FO too. Pretty sure people would buy into it.

People need to remember that this is not a card only expension. This is before anything else, and how it is advertise, a Campaign Expension that also contains cards that you can use outside the campaign. The value is not from the cards, but the Campaign. The new squadrons, obstacles and objectives are just gravy.

True, it is a campaign first and foremost. However, the Ace/Vet route only works really well if you have ships that need fixing with titles/upgrades (same with Epic escorts) rather than just adding in additional pilots. For just some additional pilots (and maybe small upgrades like new secondary weapons) for ships that A) have already been fixed via Aces/Vets or B) most likely won't see any sort of Ace/Vet pack (Firespray/Lambda/YT2400, etc...) the campaign box idea really works well.

Getting a campaign out that allows something like Scum YTs or better Imperial Firespray pilots (hell, do Dual sided Firespray cards with new Scum pilots on the opposite side) would open up the game without the cost of new models, just paper and cardboard.

Imagine if, for $50, you get this-

2 new Scum/Imperial Firespray pilots (Dual pilot cards)

2 new Lambda/YT2400 pilots (Dual pilot cards)

2 new A-wing pilots (Shara Bey and somebody)

2 new Scum/Rebel Y-wing pilots (Dual pilot cards)

2 new Scum/Rebel Z95 pilots (Dual pilot cards)

3 various new missiles/torps

4 new EPTs/Mods (not ship-specific)

1 Campaign booklet, campaign pilot sheets, mission tokens, and 4 new Debris fields

I would definitely pony up the money for that, might even get two.

I would get an expansion like that

The best thing about doing it this way is that you can add pilots for any and all ships you need to, not just the 2 in the box. (I know, most wanted, but that was different)

The bad thing about it, for x-wing at least, is that there are 3 factions, and for those lunatics with the self control to only play one, having extra stuff for the other 2 would be a waste

Personally, I'd pay $30 for just 16 new pilots, and $30 for just a decent campaign pack

There's so much fanbrew out there, what's really the added value of having FFG put it out there? Are people in your environs just not adventurous enough to try something off the beaten path?

good that Armada is getting a bit of love from ffg. paints a good future for all their SW games

If you are using armada for predictions and pressedence, I guess we can use imperial assault as well! Guys, they CAN change the values of the cards! We no longer need things like vets and aces!
