Carve a path and Elven Boots

By gamecrawler, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

If you hadn't used the Elven Boots 1 space movement does it count to use it during carve a path?

No. You can explicitly only move a number of spaces up to your Speed. Carve a Path is not a move action (it has no relation whatsoever to movement points), and cannot be combined with any other type of movement in order to attack more spaces. You might use Carve a Path to interrupt a move action, but you will still be limited to attacking a number of spaces up to your Speed, not your remaining number of movement points.

Ah that clears it up, thanks!

Another question, is Seer Kel able to attack through walls?

Another question, is Seer Kel able to attack through walls?

She only sees through figures and obstacles, as stated. Any other thing that normally blocks LoS, still does to her.

The wording of Seer Kel's hero ability is unfortunate.

"Figures and obstacles do not block your line of sight. Doors still block your line of sight as normal."

The second sentence really has no relation to how the ability works, it merely clarifies one thing that does block your line of sight as normal. A strict reading of the first sentence turns the second sentence into a "Well, duh." but if you're uncertain or unexperienced, it becomes confusing - "Why is that sentence there at all? Does it mean that doors are the only things that block LoS as normal?"

But like AndrewMM said, all the ability does is allow her to see through figures and obstacles. A better wording for the second line would've been that all other things that block Line of Sight does so as normal.

Either way, though, there's another issue; you cannot count spaces through walls . Even if you were able to have LoS through a wall or through a door, you would not be able to count spaces through a wall or through a (closed) door. This means that either way, you cannot attack through a closed door or a wall.

Ah I see. My group had just interpreted that she must be able to count spaces through walls because otherwise, it wouldnt have mentioned that doors still block her line of sight if walls also did.

But we said she can't count spaces through non game tiles. It kinda made sense thematically since she is blind...walls shouldnt hinder her blind attacks.

Our overlord is not going to be happy to find we have been playing her wrong this whole time DX

I don't mind the wording of her ability, really. While I agree the second sentence isn't strictly necessary, it's a good reminder for people who don't pay such close attention to the distinction between obstacles, doors, and map edges. Colloquially, "obstacle" could mean "anything that is in your way." In Descent, however, it has a very specific meaning. My best guess is the sentence about doors is meant to clarify that doors =/= obstacles for people who don't have that memorized.
Logically, you can pretty solidly determine that Kel can't attack through doors (as you pointed out with your space counting reasoning). Again, I think that second sentence is there for the players who don't want to have to logic themselves through that question. It's additional information spelled out to aid the player.

As always, the problem with FFG is that there is no consistency when being redundant, which leads to confusion.

I agree with Zaltyre in that the last phrase can avoid some misunderstanding, but then again, they could have just added " Walls and doors block...." aswell, and that would have been even more complete. There aren't even space issues on this card.

Yeah, it's imp

As I was writing, I was thinking that the sentence "All other things that block Line of Sight does so, such as doors or walls." My gripe is really that it's needlessly specific, and people that "don't pay such close attention" to certain distinctions might interpret it as the ability only being blocked by doors. There is, after all, a lot of space left on the card, and there would've been ample room for a better clarification.
