Newish Player New list and next buy help.

By MrMerrey, in X-Wing Squad Lists

'Sup Players.... of X-wing.

I've recently got into X-wing and have played 5 proper games and ran a few scenarios, plus some mess around games with a friends just to see what stuff does.

I'm wanting to try and diversify my lists a little, but don't really know what is worth trying out.

I'm currently favouring the obvious Interceptor, Soontir Fell, I like him with PTL, Stealth Device and Targeting computer. (I have proxied Auto-thrusters, I personally don't see the fascination, Target locks and free focus seems much better to me)

And then Carnor Jax to match and 2 cheap TIEs is my basic default list, when ever I mess around with anything else, it just doesn't feel particularly good.

I don't want to get stuck just flying Fell, but I cant find anything else worth flying.

I was hoping people could suggest fun to fly lists that play differently to interceptors.

I currently own

Standard Core Set

X-wing

A-Wing

Slave-1

Interceptor

Imperial Aces

TIE Advanced

I'm not against buying more stuff, but don't want to feel I've not used what I have bought already.

Is there anything worth while I can run with what I have that is fun, doesn't need to be really OP, but competitive in a friendly game.

I am sort of tempted by the Phantom, but I don't want it to just feel like an Uber Interceptor (An Uberceptor, if you will)

Thanks

Well, it kind of looks like you're mostly flying Interceptors because that's mainly what you have (since Imperial Aces is more Interceptors on top of your blister). Slave-1 is solid for Scum (who have better pilots for it) but not so much for Imperials. So basically you have Interceptors and some basic TIEs which probably don't wow you because they aren't as good as an Interceptor. However, they aren't supposed to be because they're so cheap. On a point by point basis, they ARE actually quite good and TIE swarms (usually w/ Howlrunner, recently with Crack Shots added) have been strong lists since the game began. The TIE Advanced comes into its own using Vader, TIE/x1 and Advanced Targeting Computer, but you would be lacking those cards that only come with the Imperial Raider. Basically, you get them on eBay - it'll cost you about the equivalent of one small ship.

So let's talk about what else you might want to pick up... Phantom is very good as you noted, but it's got some similarities to the Interceptor. It doesn't have to, but if that's mainly what you know you'll probably try to fly it like one. I would say to look into a TIE/fo, TIE Defender (either blister or Imperial Veterans or both), and Inquisitor's TIE. All three of these are very solid ships. Then come back for Phantom later on. If you want something REALLY different, you can get a Decimator.

Do you want to continue to focus on the Empire or are you interested in branching out to the Rebels and/or Scum?

If you want to stick with the Empire but try some alternatives then Imperial Veterans is a good choice as it includes a Tie Bomber and Tie Defender together with some excellent upgrade cards for both. Torpedoes, Missiles and bombs require a little practice and can seem over-priced at first but allow for some effective alpha-strikes.

The Tie defender is a very different sort of elite starfighter from the Interceptor. It maintain's the interceptor's firepower but trades its maneuverability for durability and speed. If the Interceptor is a ninja then the Defender is an armoured knight on horseback. The stock Defender is a little overpriced but Imperial Veterans contains 2 titles that make it rock. The /x7 title makes it a high-speed dogfighter while the /D version boosts its firepower by allowing it fire a cannon upgrade as well as its primary weapons in the same turn.

I know where you are coming from. But honestly, the only real solution is to buy it all, and in some cases multiples.
