Character Advice

By Hoda25, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hi guys,

My group is going to be start a new Force and Destiny group and I wanted some advice on developing a character. Our group will be doing a Knight Level Campaign so we'll begin a little more advanced characters.

Alright I'm thinking about playing as a human named Kyle Slade who's uncle, Zeth Slade, was a former Jedi Knight before Order 66. Due to Kyle having a strong Force connection in family, Zeth was sent by the Jedi Order to see if he would be eligible to be trained as a Jedi. While Kyle did have a strong connection with the Force, Zeth was gifted with the power of Precognition saw something grime happening to the Jedi Order and refused to return to Coruscant with Kyle. Due to the Clone Wars, Zeth had grown uneasy with what the future would hold for Kyle if he was to be accepted into the Jedi Order. As the Clone Wars drew to its conclusion, Zeth was made a Jedi General was stationed on different planets around the Outer Rim.

So Kyle was not taken to trained by the Jedi Order and just a few years later the newly christened Emperor Palpatine ordered the Jedi Order to be eradicated. Zeth managed to escape the initial attempt on his life and went into exile. For several years Zeth watched the remaining Jedi be tracked down and murdered by the Empire. Worried about the safety of his family members he made contact with his brother telling them it would be better for them to relocate out of the Core Worlds. He sent along a list of planets that he had deemed safe and among them that caught their fancy was the wealthy mining world, Bespin. Zeth said that he would eventually rendezvous with them on the planet.

Heeding his advice the Slades relocated to Bespin to escape the tightening grip of the Empire. Once they arrived on the planet they were welcomed by a middle aged man who Kyle did not recognize and once in a safe location the man revealed himself to be Zeth. He had changed his appearance significantly in order to avoid being recognized by the Empire. He explained what had really happened at the end of the war and he also explained that he would have to return into exile. Before Zeth left them he pulled Kyle aside and told him about how he must keep his powerful connection to the Force secret until the proper time. Kyle agreed but asked him if he would ever see him again. Zeth replied that he didn't know given the circumstances, but told him that the Force works in mysterious ways and that it is a huge galaxy. He also told Kyle to trust in the Force and beware both the Empire and the Dark Side.

Now over to Kyle . . .

Ever since he was born, Kyle has always been a compassionate person never passing up an opportunity to help someone in need. If Kyle would see another human or species being bullied, he would jump right in to defend them regardless of who they were. With the Force as his secret ally he is able to defend those under attack, his friends, and his family. He isn't afraid to defend those who can't defend themselves and he grew to dislike the Empire after seeing footage of Stormtroopers killing civilians closer to the Core Region. He spent his early days learning how to fight so that one day he would be able to fight against the Empire. As soon as he came of age he decided to leave Bespin to fight against the Empire.

Outside of fighting against the Empire, he also wishes to reconnect with his uncle, and discover the ways of the Force.

So that's just a little bit about Kyle' past. I was thinking about picking the Guardian naturally given his love of helping others and I'm thinking about picking Protector as the specialization. I really like the Protector talent tree and the skills it offers and with Knight Level I can really get invested in it.

Below are my attributes and I took the 10XP bonus for Morality to get four threes.

Morality Strength: Ambition

Morality Weakness: Hatred

Brawn: 3

Agility: 3

Intellect: 3

Cunning: 2

Willpower 3

Presence: 2

I would like Kyle to be good all around I really like this build and for his free two ranks I chose Charm and Deception to reflect his ability to settle fights without having to resort to physical violence.

Now for Force Powers I sunk a lot of the Bonus XP into the Enhance, Move, and Sense trees to increase his abilities in combat.

Finally I'll end with a couple questions.

1. What is the best area to invest this bonus XP in?? Skills, Force Powers, or Talents??

2. Looking ahead what specializations would be good to pair with the Protector tree?

3. Last what are your overall thoughts on this character and what can be improved about his backstory?

I really like this character and I think it's a good concept!!

Thanks guys!!

Soresu Defender is great way to improve your use of the Circle of Shelter talent, it gives you a bunch of ranks in Parry and Reflect and fits the theme of protecting those near him. but without a Force Rating talent it will limit you to FR 2.

I'll second the recommendation of Soresu Defender. Personally, for a character like Kyle I'd focus more on talents and skills once you've got Enhance and Sense developed well. You might also look at Shien Expert or Armorer, as Saber Throw would give you more flexibility in being able to attack while protecting someone with Circle of Shelter.

Personality-wise, talk about your thinking behind Kyle's moral strength and weakness. You frequently describe him as compassionate and someone who rushes to defend those in need, but his moral strength is Ambition, not Compassion. Is his ambition to bring down the Empire, and does that ambition outweigh his protectiveness? How much does he hate the empire for their brutal tactics, and how does that hate manifest itself?

Another question: How did he react when he was initially turned down for training? Was he angry? Despondent? Relieved? Has he let go of those feelings now that Zeth has explained why and perhaps given him a little training, or are they still lurking in his subconscious?

1st Question:

He actually has a couple ambitions, and the first one is that he wishes to play a role in defeating the Empire. He hates the Empire for its brutal tactics and for being responsible for the destruction of the Jedi Order. He feels that if it wasn't for the Empire's creation he would have gone on to become a powerful Jedi. He despises the Empire so much to the point that he feels anyone connected to the Empire is evil or corrupt. This will make it very hard for him to trust people if he would have to do underground work for the Rebellion.

2nd Question:

Kyle was born right before the Clone Wars, and due to this his uncle Zeth did not have the opportunity to visit him until the final months of the war. Even though Zeth foresaw the destruction of the Jedi, his vision was clouded by the powers of the Sith and he did not know that this event would occur so suddenly. He strongly considered returning to Coruscant with Kyle, but due to his vision he decided it would better to leave him behind.

So Kyle began to grow up secretly using the Force and his parents told him stories about the Jedi and how they were once viewed as the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy. He wished to know more and his parents told him that his uncle had ascended to the rank of Jedi Master before the end of the war. His parents told him that they believed Zeth had been killed at the end of the war and that he had once visited Kyle when he much younger. Several mores years past and at this point Kyle's parents had made contact with Zeth and made arrangements for their move to Bespin. During Zeth's brief time with them on Bespin, he did provide Kyle with a small amount of training. He also explained to Kyle why he didn't take him to be trained as a Jedi and told him about how his Clone Troopers turned on him during his last mission. Kyle wished to know more, but his uncle told him he wouldn't be able to stay in one place for very long. Before he left though, Zeth did mention that one day Kyle would learn more about the Force and that they may be able to see each other again.

Kyle understands why his uncle didn't take him to be trained, but he wishes to be trained in the ways of the Jedi. He believes that if the Rebellion is able to defeat the Empire, he will be able to learn the ways of the Jedi from his uncle.
