Which Star Wars simulator should I get? (TIE Fighter, X-Wing, etc)

By Thrawn86, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I played TIE Fighter at my friend's house when I was a kid, and want to get it for either my mac or old pc (running Windows XP).

What should I start with? TIE Fighter, X-Wing Alliance, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter? They look affordable on gog.com, but I'm not sure where I should start. I strongly prefer to play Imperials, and would like to fly the Defender and Gunboat. I have no interest in multiplayer.

TIE fighter, all the way.

TIE fighter, all the way.

Are there any mods available that make the graphics look a little better?

Not for TIE Fighter, there is a fanmade upgrade for XWA.

But TIE Fighter is by far the best, story and gamewise.

Those games really deserves an upgrade like they gave Homeworld.

I've seen some of the upgrades for XWA, and the graphics look amazing. But I briefly read over the story line and couldn't find myself getting into it.

Oh it's not too bad, especially when you get past the family starting storyline

The mutinous story of TIE Fighter is just that much better. :P .

I still have fond memories of the TIE Fighter demo, the endless ships that just keep jumping in.

X-Wing Alliance has the best graphics(in a league of its own), the best ship diversity, and the best mission diversity.

X-wing is good but the difficulty curve throws alot of people, tie fighter lets you choose your difficulty and I never felt any mission was impossible on the hardest setting.

Also you play the good guy instead of a terrorist, you want to be a law abiding officer of peace don't you.

Well, I think I'll wait for a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro or a Thrustmaster to go on sale on amazon or Best (Worst) Buy. I'll start with TIE Fighter off of gog, and then get XWA and download the upgrade. I'm all about the Imperials. It's a shame Thrawn died without restoring order to the universe.

Honestly get the whole series. XwA and XvT with the right editors are amazing for doing your own skirmishes and campaigns - just be sure to have a flight stick.

The entire series is affordable, but start with TIE Fighter, then X-Wing vs TIE Fighter.

XWA had the most ships and a good bit of mod support though.

I'd say start with X Wing and them Tie Fighter...hell, just get them all. They are all a lot of fun.

Each game builds upon the last in terms of how to play, so if you can cut your teeth with X Wing and Tie Fighter, the other two (XvT and XWA) are a lot more intuitive and I'd say easier, although getting used to the ships suddenly having maneuvering characteristics was the biggest change for me. Get used to 1/3 throttle when turning with Alliance ships in XvT and XWA. Also be prepared to dumb-fire warheads and use the "J" command in XvT and XWA.

My personal fave is still the old X Wing. Nothing like some great music and a trophy case to see your progress. Don't worry about the graphics. In the 90's, it was just so cool to have an XW flight sim, I (and I hope most/all) didn't care about graphics. The GAME itself is a lot of fun, and selecting wingmen for missions (copy and paste is your friend here) and watching them increase in pilot skill from rookie to Top Ace is neat as well. They make some of the ToD missions a lot easier.

You guys made me install Tie Fighter last night. :)

Anyone else remember the original install - where the game tested sound and you heard a TIE fly from left to right?

I reinstalled Tie Fighter and XvT.

Balance of Power gives XvT the prize. Tough missions with better graphics and much better music!

I was disappointed by XWA when it came out and have no plans to reinstall...

Yeah BoP was AHMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!

Some of those missions were so hard though.

The Gem of XWA is how it treats capital class ships, making them an actual challenge.

I had forgotten that.

I would only get XWA with the upgrade (searched it on google). I need to order a joystick soon...

Darius - did see you say theother day that the original campaigns for X-Wing andTIE Fighter are available to download for XWA?

Because, if so, the choice becomes clear - download XWA, install the XWA Update, enjoy the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter campaigns with improved visuals and music!

(...were it so easy...)

Forgive my ignorance, but how does this work? Do I need to purchase XWA through GOG? How do I then get X-Wing and TF? Thanks!

I did this for TIE Fighter not long ago, and X-wing ages ago. Problem with TIE Fighter is stupid little things - like explosions causing splash in XWA . . . . . .

Start with TIE fighter. Then go X-Wing Alliance. Then go back to X-wing. If you start with X-wing, you'll get frustrated fast.

I picked em up through steam and they work fine. When you play XWA, do install the graphics upgrade mod. Looks amazing.

The upgrade for XWA is the only reason I want to get it. I dislike playing rebels, but if the graphics are pretty...

Out of interest playstation VR is going to add VR xwing levels to battlefronts fighter squadron mode :)
